11:48 Thanks guys 👍🏽 I’m not out on brod or Troy either. Alan made a great point. Even few guys that get traded away in recent years are not doing much for other teams. I’m still going to be excited either way whoever we draft
Hey guys! As a direct follow-up to this point that I've noticed, I don't think it's necessarily the case that Colbert's first round picks were 'failures' as such in their intention of how they were drafted. They were high-floor picks with an emphasis on replacement. Najee replaced Conner, Pickett replaced Ben, Bush replaced Shazier etc. The thing to me is that quite a few of them accomplished the goal from the perspective of providing the floor. The team did end up consistently 10-7 or 9-8 after all. So much of the draft conversation is on the ceiling versus floor dichotomy. But something I've noticed that Khan emphasizes to a much greater degree than Colbert is that he de-prioritizes replacement of departing pieces in the draft and prioritizes getting the higher-ceiling player at the high value position. FA is where replacement happens with Khan. It's an important change to the team's roster building that I don't think is talked about nearly enough.
So much is discussed about the minutiae of every little detail of roster building, coaching, scheme etc. But you need to answer the fundamental question of what is the fundamental goal? From an ~action perspective, Colbert's last drafts seemed to have an emphasis on having a winning season and less emphasis on actually getting to the championship, and it was accomplished. With Khan, the actions seem to me at least to have an emphasis on maximizing the ~possibility of actually winning a championship.
Pretty Pissed at how the season ended too...just don't see the point in chanting fire Tomlin when it's not happening...same saying applies saying the same thing over again and expecting a different result 😂 Thanks for keeping us sane guys. 🖤💛
As you know I absolutely love you guys. Case in point- "There isn't an offense that's ever been created that Lamar Jackson wouldn't be incredible in." That's such a great quote from Alan. And so true. I know I'm supposed to not like him, but Lamar the player is so great and seems to be getting better the last couple of years. Add to that that the guy is such a genuinely nice person, who stays around to sign things for the opposing players after games and of course is team-first and always humble. I'm sorry, but I can't help but be a big fan of Mr. Jackson. Keep up the great work fellas!
Derrick Henry is the reason why you should care about having a nose tackle just in case Alan haven't seen the last two times Henry ran all over the Steelers D-line maybe he would change his mind.
D Tackle/Nose should be high on the draft probably 1st round especially when we gotta deal with Derrick Henry again in the division and we all know what he did to the Steelers the past two times he faced them. My free agent crush this off-season is Javon ( Grave Digga) Hargrave.
I feel like part of the intro needs to capitalize on your names, someone like, "Welcome to the Steelers afternoon drive, where you get all Steelers content from A to Z, with Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith (and sometimes a Derek Bell).".
@PghSteelersNow Hey guys big fan of the show and everyday listener. Speaking of positional value in the 1st rd, what do you think is more important for the Steelers to target either a defensive tackle with pass rush capability like Derrick Harmon to replace Ogunjobi since he'll more than likely be a cap casualty or would it be wiser to target a wr like Emeka Egbuka or Matthew Golden due to the inflating cost of wrs in free agency. I think the Steelers will still sign one in free agency but with Pickens antics and him being in a contract year I think it might be best to draft in the 1st rd and get one in FA so they have a backup plan if Pickens is moved. If they're going to stick with Fields, maybe its best to surround him with some weapons on the outside and see what he can do because he hasn't since he was at Ohio St.
My issue with Tomlin is the amount of control he has, his antiquated schematics (like playing nickel vs the Ravens jumbo packages minus Zay Flowers), & his overall resistance to change. The team isn't talented bc "his guys" have been busts. The more his influence grows in thst building, the more stagnant the franchise becomes. Time has proven me right, it'll continue to prove me right, & the invention of new excuses every year is hilarious 😂. Keep them coming please?!?! 👏
It’s wild that with just in a couple of years of being a head coach Dan Campbell already has more of a coaching tree than Tomlin. How is that possible?! And do you think thats a sign that Tomlin isn’t as great of a coach everybody likes to make him out to be?
What questions do you want Mr Rooney to answer specifically, whenever he speaks? Both of you… would like to hear the question from a fan and a reporter. Also, can we keep Najee AND draft an RB. Yes, I’m still hoping!💛🖤
From the outside looking in the difference between Harbaugh and Tomlin is that it seems like Harbaugh allows his OC and DC coach and run their own game plans. Where Tomlin seems to run the defense and have a heavy influence on the offense. With that said, what real competent DC would wanna work for Tomlin? Isn’t that why Flores left? Just seems like Tomlin is becoming more of a liability at this point.
Colbert was actually retired years before he retired. he stunk up the joint for last few years. 77 looks like a whiff. and should move inside because of his two left feet . 76 is a walking mash unit if he can't stay healthy. look how the Packers handled their qb position. they are their 3rd franchise qb in a row!!
I love Alan, but this team does have talent. That's what is so frustrating. You can't tell me our coaches don't get out schemed more and more. Scripted plays are an issue. There is no cleverness especially on offense
Allan you are trippin. Tomlin would totally mishandle Lamar and also handicap the offense. He would screw that defense so had. Harbaugh use would Fields properly
Can’t agree with your argument that there is no better coach out there than Tomlin currently. You don’t know that. The point is that we need a change and maybe the new coach would not be better but maybe not. You can’t know until a change is made. What you are doing is settling.
Kevin Colbert was a bad general manager and people act like he’s a HOFamer. I’ve said it for years, he’s put this team in such a deep hole with years of terrible drafts. Thank you Omar
Yeah only if we had people in the high up the actually knew how to run an organization let alone draft the right people we're completely screwed has Steelers fans this organization is a mess from top to bottom not a single change
Are you people delusional what the hell is Arthur Smith done to be considered a good offensive coordinator make Canada had a better stretch at the end 😂😂😂 this team will never win a playoff game with Mike Tomlin or Arthur Smith wake up and smell the Tea leaves pal
This is the first year I've tried listening to podcast. I've tried them all. You guys are my favorite. Definitely look forward to it every day.

As soon as Robert Saleh is done with HC chances they should immediately hire him as DC or special Defensive assistant coach
I agree but we all know the Steelers won't go after the coordinators the fans want.
They won’t
I agree, but I don't think Tomlin will do it.
Not happening but it's got my vote

Steelers not caring about a true NT is the reason why we're always leaking by seasons end....terrible strategy
Absolutely right! Space eating, pocket pushing NT is critical to a 3 -= defense. That would make our MLBs so much better too.
@garymccombs4867 💯
Derrick Henry is the reason why you should care about having a nose tackle just in case Alan haven't seen the last two times Henry ran all over the Steelers D-line maybe he would change his mind.
Informative!
Solutions oriented!
Count me in on this cast!
I feel like we need to prioritize stopping the run . Our defensive line is all pass rushers first! Cam Heyward is the only above average run stopper.

Alan, can you break down the difference between a coordinator and a coach?
Other than Chuck Noll, neither Bill Cowher nor Mike Tomlin had long resumes. Neither was an obvious candidate. Talk about living in your fears!
The simple answer is yes
@PghSteelersNow Hey guys big fan of the show and everyday listener. Alan, Harbaugh doesn't play conservative on offense and he also let his coaches coach
"They don't want a nose tackle" ... 10 days after getting gashed for 300 rushing yards. Tomlin-logic 😂😂😂
From the outside looking in the difference between Harbaugh and Tomlin is that it seems like Harbaugh allows his OC and DC coach and run their own game plans. Tomlin has problems but the drafting has been the bigger problem for a team who wants to build through the draft.
Ironically, the Steelers under Colbert had their shot at Lamar & blew it!!
I love Alan, but this team does have talent. That's what is so frustrating. You can't tell me our coaches don't get out schemed more and more. Scripted plays are an issue. There is no cleverness especially on offense
Jon Gruden???
If the Steelers' poor drafting is why they are where they are, then why does Kevin Colbert (according to local media) belong in the HOF🤔
Allan had totally lost me on this coaching thing.
Allan you are trippin. Tomlin would totally mishandle Lamar and also handicap the offense. He would screw that defense so had. Harbaugh use would Fields properly
So tell me your opinion on this.
Get rid of Larry O, move Benton in front of Watt and draft or pick up a big NT
Allen, I don't know what you've been watching the steelers. Defense would be so much better with the Ravens. Defensive coordinator staff.
And, btw, before Noll, the Steelers hired a lot of "obvious" candidates!
Can’t agree with your argument that there is no better coach out there than Tomlin currently. You don’t know that. The point is that we need a change and maybe the new coach would not be better but maybe not. You can’t know until a change is made. What you are doing is settling.
McVay isn’t the reason the rams win…
If your gonna blame the draft picks and I agree they been bad , who has the loudest voice on the picks?
Tomlin, he runs the whole show.
this shett is not recent
Mike Tomlin - incompetent clown
14 out of 18 seasons without a playoff win.
3-10 last 13 playoff games.
As Tomlin gets more power expect worse drafts.
Kevin Colbert was a bad general manager and people act like he’s a HOFamer. I’ve said it for years, he’s put this team in such a deep hole with years of terrible drafts. Thank you Omar
