After a decade or so with my NEX 5n, I have upgraded through 2x canon DSLR's , couple of go pro's , 2 drones and a Sony FX3 for good measure, but I refuse to retire this little beasty of a tiny street camera! After a couple years with this thing in my hand the only showstopper or downsides I see, is 1. lack of hot shoe, and 2. lack of tether abilities.. other than that, the NEX is a simple, small, capable, fun cameras, and generally put a smile on my face when I shoot with it.
The best thing about the NEX-5 is, that you find people selling the camera with all the lenses....... Just bought one for 150.-- with 6 different lenses.......
The 5R body can be the game changer depending on why/what you are getting the camera for. Having and additional wheel up top is going to be a night and day difference if you want to be shooting in priority and manual modes.
Excellent video. Thank you. I realize this is a video about the Sony NEX 5 series cameras but I can't help but think you should have at least mentioned the Sony A5100 and that it is actually worth the extra price over any of the NEX series cameras.
Thanks for the input! Yeah this video is centered around the NEX 5 series specifically. The main reason I didn’t include the a5100 is because the NEX 5’s are definitely a higher supply in the used camera market. If you lump the four NEX 5 models together.. you can find hundreds online at any given time. The a5100 is a lot harder to find. I actually own that camera and am taking it to VidCon this week and going to be working on a review for budget filmmakers who are looking for an amazing option under $300.
Nex-5d (Europe and Asia version) as well as the NEX5 does have a firmware update available from Sony that helps with some of the video problems. It lets you maintain the aperture that you set for video giving you some manual control. The European version also gets 25 FPS at 1080P instead of interlaced which is nice.
Its a different sensor in the N and the R - or at least a very heavily re-worked/upgraded version of it. The R is hybrid phase detect (albeit a really crude, early implementation by Sony). The N is contrast detect. Phase detect zones are built into the sensor.
I still have my NEX-5 that I bought when it first came out. It was a fantastic camera for a interchangeable lens camera newbie like myself at the time in that you could start by using it as an interchangeable lens point and shoot and figure out how to use the settings and lenses to accomplish specific things with time. I still like the fact that it is so small, although the 18-55 kit lens struck me as large, though good, at the time. I thought the menu was really easy to use and the camera came with built in tips which was great. The NEX 5 started me on the Sony APS-C road which has taken me to the a6000, the a6300 and now the a6700 plus eventually a good selection of Sony APS-C lenses. Fond memories of using the NEX 5 on a variety of trips and outings. I did miss having a viewfinder though ,,, which is what prompted me to get the a6000.
@@L_Madamba It has been a while sense I have used that camera. It is a great camera and produces awesome results. There are some weird quirks about it, and If I can get my hands on one I would be happy to do a review.
i gave seconde life to my Sony nex 5N by pairing it with Sigma 18 50mm f2.8 and sigma 30mm F1.4, this old camera perform well with this new lenses, i m happy i downloaded same app from playmemories for my camera like Focus Bracketing, time laps and stop motion, today impossible to have this fonction in new camera
I have the 5t and it has a few things more than the 5r , besides the NFC, the 5r has edge focus that hunts for the edges ,the 5t has phase focus that is faster , I think both have wifi to send pictures to the app on your phone tablet computer or social media, the touch screen is kinda different the older 5n first was capacitive like the iphone itouch then the 5r came out also had capacitive and the con of the 5t was resistive older technology that was pressure sensitive you could use a plastic pen to write or draw like on the tx cyber shot slim cameras, also on the 5t you could use the app as a remote viewfinder and control the camera on your phone , it maybe worked on the 5r too but I didn't know, also the 5t came out with a different lens than the one you have 18-75mm it came with the motorized zoom 16-50mm selp 1650 that is not better in low light because the lens is smaller I had to buy the 18-75mm that was better gathering light at automatic shots
I HAVE A QUESTION... so i want to buy a setup for under 300 euros.. my options are Sony Nex 5 + Sigma 30mm f1.4 OR Sony Nex 7 + Brightinstar 50mm f1.8 WHICH ONE DO YOU SUGGEST? (Both cost around 280 euros used)
i'm planning to get a camera to upgrade from my a200 and i want to learn videography. so should i get nex 5n, nex 6, or go straight to a5000? i don't have the budget to go to a6000
@@kraigpruett is the 5r is better than nex 6? i might choose between 5r or a5000 depending on the stock, but i still curious which one have the best value between those. oh and a5100 is quite expensive in my country
@@PinotNoir_the 5100 is a simplified a6000 in regards to physical controls, but the internals are the same. The 6 is a bit older, but a better feel in hand and more buttons and dials, the video capability is behind the 5100 and also the iso performance.
Does anyone know if the underwater housing is the same for the NEX-5 and the 5N? I think the body dimensions are exactly the same...(?) (said Bing search)

Maybe u know or don't, but in NEX-5R u can tilt the screen down too (idk in my nex-5r I can do this)
