In a pinch, I have used a coin before - specifically a dime. I so love the fact you do these kind of videos. Even though you have a shop where you could make money by encouraging the purchase of a tool, you really show your heart by making crafting affordable to all. I so enjoy your videos, I've learned so much!. You are an awesome teacher, so upbeat, funny and relatable. I like your plan to share more like this. You do share these kind of tips in your project videos and I love that too. You have such a diverse group of followers with varying skill sets, it's great to see you do your best to make projects suitable for all. Love, love, love you!
Dimes are very thin, so that's a plus, but if you're using fragile paper you could also substitute a penny or a nickel, since they have smooth edges. :)
This was great, thank you! I’m new to paper crafting, but am a perfectionist type, so sloppy creases would dive me nuts! I will try all the different ways in this video and see which I like best.
My respect to you, dear lady. I so very often look for simple ways to do things myself, but some might not know they can make their own mustard, per say. "Some things we have in the store - you need, and some things you can get around. So spend your money wisely. Spend it where YOU need to spend it - on what you need to spend it on. And if tools are not your thing, there are some ways to get around it." That is an honest and therefore respectable business perspective.
Great ideas. Things that can be used to burnish the fold: The rounded part of a spoon, a paint brayer, a printmaking baren, a rolling pin, a glass, etc.
What a great informative video! DIY websites/stationary websites/etc. tend to advertise all these different tools to buy if someone plans to make their own crafts like this. As a casual crafter, I wouldn't use it enough to justify its purchase. Thank you for sharing these craft hacks! Your own personal hacks that come from experience like using the edge of the ruler to guide ripping the tape and not to mention the hack of scoring paper in multiple ways are exactly the kind of expertise I would not have known otherwise. I am glad I stumbled upon this video!
I sooooooo appreciate that you acknowledge that we have limited resources because we all do!!! But you could be pushy about always selling us every single item you use...just to make money. That's where I see your integrity coming through and where I see God blessing you :) Thanks for sharing these simple hacks with us. Please share more. I've used a crafting popsicle stick to score!
Six months ago I had no idea of what a scoring tool was. For the longest time I used my self healing board, my quilting ruler and a crochet needle. I also used the board and ruler with a razor knife to cut my paper.
I have been crafting for years, same as many other people. I recently purchased a stamping platform. My latest obsession is making weird and wonderful folds for card making. So I started to look for a scoring board. As nearly every tutorial video is with a score board. I really enjoyed watching this. How clever to use all these different things. My scoring way has always been a pencil and a ruler. What turned into a bad idea of mine was a glass dip pen that I use for my parchment craft, oh dear it ripped the card. My recent success came from using a diamond painting pen. I love watching your videos they are always fun.
You are too sweet and kind to show these methods for those who do not have these tools or have a to improvise. I've used the hard edge of hard book cover and my nails. Ha! Ha!
I literally purchased one a few months ago. I never used it and now I've misplaced it. This video is extremely useful and helpful. Thank you so much!!!!
Thanks Maymay, I have to admit I like buying all the tools but often don't actually use them. Little ideas like you gave in this video may help me control my spending plus reduce all the stuff I carry around if needing to travel light. I always have in the back of my mind that I really do not have other family and friends who would appreciate paper crafting gifts therefore it is often hard to justify the expense. Keep up the videos do enjoy watching yours very much.
Thank you for giving so many different ways to score! I only do this once in a while so, for me, putting the money into purchasing a scoring board is not practical for me so you taking the time to show other options is so awesome! If I was making cards as often as you do, I would totally put the money into getting the "fancy", or, to put it another way, practical, tools (like a scoring board or bone folder etc.) that would allow me to use my time much more efficiently in comparison to using these other, alternative, methods. So thank you again for taking the time to share those options! ❤
Thank you so much for this video. You just saved me money. I tried the biro lid trick and it worked a treat. Thank you! Take good care. Watching from the rural forests of Tasmania Australia x
I would use whatever I had handy...wooden skewer with a dull point, pen parts, and whatever Maymay showed, etc. My DIL found a new Martha Stewart scoreboard at Salvation Army for $4. What a find! Also craft stores often have 40-60% off one item coupons in my area. If you don’t have one, put it on your birthday wish list!! Worth it.
I was using a ruler and a point Turner tool that I have for sewing....it worked great....I still only use the groove in my trimmer to score. I do have a bone folder now lol!! Thanks maymay for all your tips along the way they do help...God bless
Hello. I’m totally new to card making so all this is new for me and I find it amazing! Very grateful for all those hacks 😃 I’m so happy that I found your video 🥰
Great tips!! I sharpened 2 wooden dowel rods in a cheap pencil sharpener, one for a pokey tool and the other one I made blunt to use as you would a bone folder. Worked Great! Tfs :)
I used wooden chop sticks like the gel pen. They're also great for putting straws inside straws for wand handles. Love your no tools tricks. Please do more.
I'm glad Google led me to this video! I plan on scoring place card holders for my wedding but I didn't want to go out to purchase a bone folder and scoring board for one -time use. Thanks for this!
Yes please to crafting hacks. To everyone who has commented thus far, I thank you. You all have some ingenious hacks and have reignited my interest in crafting. Not having a scoreboard or trimmer is challenging. 😊 💚❤️💜
That was a masterclass - thank you very much . I have been looking for a way to score 350 gsm cards , the spine on A7 cards , but can't / don't want to spend £22 on a scoring board . You have made my day : Best Wishes from London
YEARS ago I bought a jug of milk at the grocery store. Where your fingers are meant to go through the handle, the plastic hadn't punched out. It was about 4" long, more pointy at one end and rounded at the other. It was a bit puffy in the middle (probably 2 layers of plastic with a bit of air in the middle) but with firm tapered edges. I knew it was good for something and kept it. I've used it as a bone folder, a scoring tool and a picker. Oddest darned thing how I got it and I have used the heck out of it!!
Thanks Maymay. I’d love to see more tools and hacks. I’m currently between a permanent place to live so I’m trying not to accumulate too much Stuff. Haha to that. I think a wooden skewer would work but I haven’t tried it. Just go in with my fingers. But I like your suggestions.
As I'm relatively new to papercraft and haven't got many stamps. I've got a notebook and stamped each set into it. Then I've put them into a container in the order I've stamped them a well as made an written index in the front so I know which/what sentiment/verse/picture I have so I can find/make it easier
I use the groove of my Fiscar paper cutter and the curved end of my picky tool to score my paper. Just order a score board but the other way works if you don't have the board.
I would use the end of my pen with the lid on to draw a line from one spot to the next. I remember before getting my score tool and how in love with it I was when I finally got one. I consider this a tool that is necessary for crafting I think mine was in sale on Ebay but coupons at major craft chains make this reasonable to purchase.
Great ideas.... If I didn't have a scoring board, is use the edge of a key..... Something I want to try is using a fork to make more than one score line at a time... Don't know if it would work 😋
Thank you Maymay for sharing these little useful tips!😬i would use an empty ballpoint pen..like the ink has been used or drain used up!with the help of the ruler of course😍👍🏼💕💕
Maybe a rounded toothpick? Also, I've heard some you tube people say to fold the paper the opposite of the crease. As to not break the paper fibers, because they could possibly show on the fold. Just curious to know your thoughts on this....Thanks for sharing Maymay!! Always appreciate your crafty tips!!😊
In a pinch, I have used a mechanical pencil with the lead removed for scoring. If you do this, you want one with a narrow plastic tip, of course. :) Metal-tipped mechanical pencils are likely too sharp.
I use an old pen (or the Cricut scoring pen) and my cutter - I just keep the blade away from my paper, or remove it, then I use the ruler on my cutter to measure and run the pen along the blade track - most of the time I will close the arm that holds the blade so the paper will not shift. Before this I would do the ruler method like you showed only I'd use a pencil to run along the edge that way I could make sure everything was straight and I would simply erase the line when I was done
When I’ve watched other tutorials on scoring, they’ve said to fold on the opposite side of the scored side of paper. As you said, it helps to prevent the cardstock from cracking but it’s because the fibers were forced the opposite direction. I have a scoreboard and embossing tools but could have used a ruler and fondant stylus from my cake decorating tools.
I don’t fold to the opposite side because I like the smooth result I get on both sides of my fold by folding this way. If I score and then flip the paper and fold the opposite of the way I scored I get a “roll” in the score/fold line. Hard to explain but I hope it makes sense. Thanks!
Thanks for your great tips💓!I took the butterknife but I wish me to my Birthday a scoringboard...be very excidet bc its faster.Lots of love your Patricia ❤✌
Such helpful ideas. I was wondering about how to use the methods you mentioned in place of the scoring tools. My favorite of these is the folding - ruler method. Next to that one is the butter knife. TYSM for sharing this video with us. I do appreciate your help and advice. P.S.: I've been searching for a scoring method I can use without having to buy the fancy tools and, had heard the ruler and butter knife methods mentioned before. But, didn't really see how to use them (in detail) until watching your video here. So that is really helpful for me. 😉
I really enjoy using my scoreboard. To me it was worth the money. I would like to get a mini score board to have handy for cards and smaller projects. ***Maymay, any suggestions for easily making pockets without buying a We R Memories Pocket punch board? I would love to get one, but trying to cut down on crafting expenses and supplies. Thanks in advance!

Today I'm really swinging for the fences, about to embark on a journey that is entirely new to me, scoring & creasing. To say I'm nervous going into this would be the understatement of the decade, my anxiety is taking over & I'm literally sick because my fear of failing at being able to create a fold is overwhelming. I do not have the proper tools for scoring &creasing instead I am using a book end in place of a ruler & what was once used Exclusively for the repair & assembly of screens I am now using a Spline Roller as my scoring tool & there is no room for error & insufficient amount for me to even practice on 1 but I really have no choice but to try it multiple ways to find out which will produce the best outcome; will scoring & creasing prior to laminating produce the better fold or scoring/creasing post laminate? Like I said at the beginning, I'm really swinging for the fences with this, I have to be able to create a nice strong fold on laminated paper. Because it's more than just paper, I have mine & about 30 of my family members Memorial Cards from my Grandmas funeral last week. Wish me luck!
Your scoring and creasing journey intro is inspiring and somewhat familiar. 🙏 How are your journeys now? I'd like to share my current transformations in creativity that I previously didn't imagine possible, so that maybe someone reading this will be inspired to create. @mandalishis I also relate to the thick clouds of anxiety and the winds of fear that I pull into a vortex around my self expression. Oh, so dark and destructive have been the storms I've created. Currently, I give Thanks for what I've learned and am making changes in my thoughts and habits. For me, I'm Blessed to be breaking my dark creative cycles and some through: ***making 'mistakes' on purpose and finding their beauty; ***accidental 'mistakes' are now opportunities to work into a project instead of tossing the project out; ***realizing and changing my distorted views of superficially defining 'mistakes', which is deepening my 'acceptance'; ***validating my curiosity in new art forms led to actually trying them - and now I seek them out; ***allowing creativity as true self-expression; ***instead of taking many things in my art oh so seriously (which reinforced self-criticism), I'm learning to detach and let the art flow through me; ***flowing from my heart and not my mind; ***finding what makes laughter uncontrollably burst from my Being (like RUclips Shorts of certain dancing) and building it into a habit: every day, truly LAUGH! ❤️ May God bless you all ❤
I take the blade out of my Fiskars trimmer and use the handle to score. There is a trimmer that actually has a trimmer and scorer attached so I got the idea from that

You could use the “tail” end of a rat tail comb, or a wooden cuticle stick. Before I had a score board I also used a nail art dotting tool.

I am not a paper artist, but I have the occasional need to score paper. This is awesome! Thanks for the great tips.
I use a dried up pen for my scoring tool. One with a thick point. Works great for my 180 folding in the craft altered book art.

Love this, I can pass this on to my Grand daughters and YES to some hack videos.

A blunt tapestry needle and ruler works great on cardstock.
I used wooden chop sticks like the gel pen. They're also great for putting straws inside straws for wand handles. Love your no tools tricks. Please do more.
I put my paper on the paper cutter, using the slot and score my paper with a manicure tool :-D
Florence Kho good idea. Like an orange stick?
Dang that's smart-
Oh man, I would never have thought of that, really clever. I do have a paper cutter so I'm going to try it and I do have a bone folder too. Thanks.

Ball Point Needle, Knitting Needle, Fun Foam, Mouse Pad, Ruler or Whatever I find around home or where I am at to use
I use tweezers, not super sharp because they may cut through but the dull work perfectly.
Thank you ❤️
I use a combination score board/ paper cutter from WeR Memory Keepers. Bought 1 tool instead of 2 to save money and space.

I use a stylis and my paper trimmer.
Would love to see more tool hack videos
Nail clippers handle
I use an acrylic paint spatula
Before I got my score board & bone folder, I used the tip of a needle nose pliers 😁
I've been using the side of a safety pin
Did you do more hack videos for tools?
I use some tools from old manicure sets- some tools fit better for scoring paper than for my nails :-)
In a pinch I've used a dried up pen.
You can use the edge of a table.
