As a Christian, I have read this story many times, and it's one of my favorites. One thing about it that isn't really clear until you research the history of Nineveh. The city was near the Tigris River, which connects to the Persian gulf, and one of their chief gods was a fish god. So picture it from their perception. A large fish, the avatar of their god, appears and vomits up a prophet who declares doom if they don't repent. I find it a hilarious example of God's sense of humor.

They are worshipping one of the 4 end time fallen angel in charge of all the waterways. While here, they have their fun and trick humanity into worship them as gods. Prayers are energy, heard, felt and desired by these entitites. Its food to them and they grant your desires until your soul is emptied. This is why angels are NOT to be prayed to, but one may pray to the Father to send angel if needed. All heart energy goes to the Father as instructed by His Son.

Seems to me that the fish god may have just been passing on its way to the place that fish and alligator gods rest. It would be rude to just let the Hebrew drown and for the Torah to be even more confusing, so Fish-god swallowed the bloke and vomited him back up to continue his quest. All very plausible.

41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

Spiritually is meant to be a simplistic thing. This is why God says we must be innocent as a child to reach heaven. The moral of this story is God places a calling on some of our lives. Which means we must walk accordingly to his direction. When we go off our path we will find ourselves somewhere not desired. It will be known to even others and ourselves that something is wrong and off. Alone, without direction....until we seek him and give ourselves to him...willingly.

That's all I have to say. So, the information maybe hidden in the Torah and It should be explained in one of those book otherwise Rabbi Friedman wouldn't have mentioned it. Shalom.

Our thoughts are the sea and God breaths his truth on our thoughts and the friction causes a storm. Jonas is forced into the belly of a fish and tacken to the depths of mans thought and Jonas is allowed to see himself as he truly is. From bottom to top. He cries out in despair and understanding.
He realized that every thought and action effects everyone else and that if you live as a human you make everyone else live the same way. God sends people with his light as an example to others so they can see more than themselves and focus upwards.
So if a Rabbi speaks out, inviting us to connect and think on a higher level, I say THANKYOU. Your light connects to others so brightening a dark sea.

Jonah's story is described with very few words, but it's much deeper than what we just read.
God's compassion is definitely the most important, something we tend to 'forget' while reading, because we often focus on the end of the story.
But how about the beginning. We also need to appreciate all those who were saved, because Jonah disobeyed God (yes, this is completely against all logic). I bet God knew in advance that Jonah would try and run away, and that he found probably the worst ship available, where people were far away from God.
Now everyone of these people ended up worshipping God. Isn't *that* amazing ? :)
-So not only was Nineve spared, but also the ungodly people that God did not tell Jonah about.
It tells us that God has compassion for everyone and that He wants everyone to come back to Him.
