For many years, during the months of December to May, the female Olive Ridley Turtles come to different beaches in Konkan to lay eggs in the nesting season. After ensuring the safety of these eggs, Konkan villagers do sea turtle conservation & after they celebrate the sea turtle Festival every year. These turtle festivals have started Eco Tourism in Velas, Anjarle, Gavkhadi and offer a good source of income for the local Konkan villagers and also the sea turtle conservation activity. The team effort of the Sahyadri Nisarga Mirta organization and the Konkan villagers have ensured the safety of over 50,000 baby turtles born on different sandy beaches in Ratnagiri in the last 20 years and have created a secure passage for them to go back to the sea. This one of a kind, the unique sea Turtle Festival is something one shouldn’t miss.
aanjrle & Velas are small villages in Konkan Ratnagiri district which is famous for the Olive Ridley turtle population that visit both beaches every year and lay their eggs. in Maharashtra sea turtle conservation movement is undertaken by the An NGO named 'Sahyadri Nisarga mitra' with help of forest department and local villagers. by the years villagers committee has taken the initiative to conserve olive ridley turtles by providing protection to their eggs. Witnessing a baby turtle coming out of the egg and then finding its way to the sea by those baby steps is an unforgettable moment.
Konkan is the rugged section of the mid-western coastline of the Indian Subcontinent, the coastal hinterland of Konkan comprises of numerous riverine islands, river valleys, and the hilly slopes of the Western Ghats, that lead up into the tablelands of the Deccan region. Geographically, Konkan is bound by the Arabian Sea to the west, the Deccan plateau to the east. The Konkan Coast proceeds from the north at Damaon in the Gulf of Cambay, extends southwards all along the western seaside areas of Maharashtra and Goa, and meets the Canara coast at the northern edge of Karwar District in Karnataka. The most well known islands of Konkan, are Ilhas de Goa, the site of the capital city of Panjim and Salsette Island on which Bombay (Mumbai), the capital of Maharashtra is situated.
