- So I got this Tolkien set at Christmas, and already finished the Hobbit earlier this year. Well, now I finished the first of the LOTR trilogy. I compare it to the Jackson version AND Ralph Bashki's version (Yes, I've seen that long ago) to get where things are all at. Honestly, getting into it I can see why it's so treasured. The songs in it are the biggest thing that stands out to me, especially 'Durin's Day'. Well just watch the review video and you'll see.
Very glad the algorithm brought you up! Great review. I think you'll appreciate Fellowship of the Ring more once you've finished Return of the King. Its really a story that grows on you.
Goal is to finish all 3 this year. So I'll see. Thanks for watching
The scene that you mentioned where Saruman's cloak is no longer white but multicolored has a quote that I like very much. Saruman says "The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken" and Gandalf replies "In which case it is no longer white. And he thata breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."
It's like an evil inverse of Joseph's coat. This version shows his decadence from leaving the white in purity to a relative mindset in evil
Love those quotes, Gandalf with the perfect reply 🔥
And the saruman of many colors thing... not that subtle 😅
@frankydawgk3640 to be fair, if I think of what you're insinuating, I don't think it was a LGBT thing, not what Tolkien was thinking I'd say. It was just a fall from the purity that he was supposed to be.
If you liked the Song of Durin poem, Tolkien's epic Lay of Leithian poem is in the same meter... although it's almost book length itself (even unfinished. )

The phrase "all that glitters" is old, though Tolkien played with is meaning via a reversal - All that is gold does not glitter". Clever Hobbit.
Interesting. I don't know the phrase origination beforehand, but I see it predates Shakespeare but he had a famous line akin to it. So possibly due to his influence it's known.
Nice one 👍
I agree it can be a little clunky to begin with... especially for people who have only the movie for base and arent prepared for the songs or tom bom 😅
Wait till your on read throughs 5+ youll love it all 😅
It crazy how good the movie is but this book is every bit as awesome.
You need to check out the song of durin here on yt mate theres an a.i version and a real john rhys davies one reading through the poem as Gimli. Both are epic!
Love that poem
Also highly reccomend the silmarillion if you havent read it... its Tolkiens true masterpiece.
I didn't know there was a reading of it, let alone by him. But soon as I read your comment I looked for it. It's awesome, thanks for bringing it to my attention
