So-called “sovereign citizens” - people who believe US laws don’t apply to them - have seen their movement growing over the last several years. And that means police and the courts are dealing with them more and more. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber takes a look at cases where defendants tried to use their “sovereignty” as a defense and were put in their place.

Weird story- In the early 90's the Sovereign Citizen movement was pretty big here. I knew a person that told me that we're only supposed to pay 2 cents to mail a standard letter. I didn't believe it so he sent me a letter via the USPS. The letter had several stamps referring the post office to read different codes. It also had a two one cent stamps. I should have saved it. I couldn't believe it worked. I still think the post office just let it go through so they didn't have to deal with the group coming in. :)

Judges often do a court canvass before accepting a pro-se defense, primarily because the court is responsible for ensuring a fair trial for all parties. They are simply doing their jobs...in the same way teachers work with whatever a child walks in the door with or the rubbish man who empties bins with whatever trash is in them. Winning a case on their own merits, no.
Every once in a great while a case will go on far too long due to the defendant stalling (hiring/firing attorneys, filing frivolous motions in regards to the case, etc.). It may be dismissed without prejudice, or temporarily dismissed. Criminal cases could be refiled in a different court, filed against others, or amended to include new charges. Still, they must be refiled before the applicable statute of limitations has expired.
Even a small technicality could dismiss a case such as a police officer failing to show up as a witness. The SovCits would call all of the above a 'win.'

Living in Australia 🇦🇺 this nonsense isn’t a thing that happens, mainly because we don’t have a Bill of Right or a constitution of rights. But this nonsense about being a woman, man or a thing is starting to make a show in our courts. I like how your judges set a line in the ground. They cost the courts huge dollars. And telling the Judge I can’t be there for my hearing unless you pay for my petrol and time, is something else. If they don’t like how the courts work, well don’t do the crime!!!!

He wanted to be held in contempt and go back to his cell (like he screamed several times while being dragged to the other courtroom) so that the trial couldn't proceed and eventually have to be dropped. He told his mother that on a recorded call from jail.
