This is extra fun to figure out with a European QWERTY keyboard 😂
So far I've managed to find these keys:
[ = ] is the key left of backspace
    [ _ ] is [shift] + [questionmark]
[ " ] is [shift] + [ä] or ae (replace ä with whatever you have in the same physical location)
Now to figure out how to save edit and exit... Neither esc nor any other key seems to work... Guess it's something with a modifier 😢
    Update:
[del] is functionally backspace when typing
[backspace] will exit edit mode (not confusing at all)
[shift] + [dash/underscore] will jump the cursor to the command line at the bottom and initialise it with a colon ( : )
After that, all I had to do was add "ws" like you mentioned after the colon and hit [enter]. There goes that hour.
I sincerely hope it helps at least one other person :D
Got my web interface up and running now. Thanks again!

    • @SomethingAzn
      @SomethingAzn  Год назад +3

Dang, I looked at the layout and I'm already confused. If it helps at all, you need to hit Esc to exit out of input mode. Then type :wq
      :w is save
      :q is quit
You can combine both into one step
      :wq is save & quit

      @@SomethingAzn
Update: I ended up finding all the right keys, will add onto the og list in first comment.
Unfortunately, esc does not exit edit mode. I'm sure :w and :q would work if I managed to leave edit...
I ended up working around it by mounting the iso in Windows (I used PowerISO, but anything similar works), edited the loader.conf file directly in notepad, saved changes and reflashed the iso to the USB. I haven't actually tried installing TrueNAS after this part yet, but I don't see why it won't work.
Will drop an update when I do. Thanks for the helpful info in the video :)

This is so funny because I was doing research for building a PLEX and thought TRUENAS sounds great but has quiks like drivers etc. which may or may not work on your "non server" grade hardware. There are things I could do like you described but in the end going windows myself simply because it works out of the box and the simplicity and familiarity of it. Also the community is definitely hit or miss for sure lots of old curmudgeons who are stuck in old ideologies. Thanks for the vid. :)

What's the best alternative to TrueNAS for someone not very comfortable with command line stuff? Like I just want something that works. Maybe later when I'm more comfortable with things I can change to something else. I'm looking to setup a personal cloud server, not a media server.

@@RpR456 hey, so this probably doesn't apply to you, but for me it ended up being a borked in-wall ethernet port. I have two next to eachother, and only one of them works correctly. based on this, I'd say consider going over your ports and cables on both/all sides, to make sure there isn't an issue there.
as soon as I plugged the server into the other port, everything worked. and anything I plug into the broken port has no internet (though it does see/establish a connection)

Will this resolve issues with RealTek 1Gb onboard hardware or is it specific to 2.5Gb? Mine will sometimes handle 60MB/s file accesses for hours before failing, and at other times it will fail after 5 minutes and my NAS disappears from the network. I just picked up an Intel NIC, but would love to be able to resolve my problem by just adding 2 tunable entries.

No idea, but no harm in trying. I remember reading about someone else having problems with a RealTek 1Gb, but I don't remember if they found a solution

@@SomethingAznThanks For getting back to me!
I'll try adding the two statements via the editor. If that works, I'll add them as tunables. If it fails and I can't access the NAS over the network, I can always just edit out the two lines.
I'll update this comment later either way in case others will benefit from this experience.

No joy. I made the changes and fired up a bunch of file transfers from one TrueNAS machine to another via a Windows 10 desktop. The transfer reached 60MB/s, ran for about 7 or 8 minutes, then the source machine dropped off the network.
I'll probably just install a couple of Intel-based 1Gb nics and be done with screwing around. At about $25 each, it isn'r worth my time to keep messing around.
Thanks again for making the video and responding to my question! Much appreciated, sir.

@@SomethingAzn I installed an Intel NIC in one of my TrueNAS machines and did some large file transfers to a Windows-based PC. It worked great, transferring about 500GB of data at 90+ Mb/s. I did the test transfer twice and it went without any problems both times.
I'm pleased that a $25 NIC and just a little bit of time and effort has resolved my issues.

Depends on the actual network card attached to the adapter. This is mainly for realtek cards

Based on the forum comments, Realtek is not supported by default. However, they added a beta driver that needs to be enabled. It should be enabled automatically in some future version, but based on people still having this problem, I'm guessing this future version has not arrived yet

Does this trick work on SCALE?

I think Scale is supposed to have Realtek support built in. If not, I assume the process is similar since it’s linux based

Good info and it worked. But some people who setup truenas aren't experts and most of your steps you didn't explain.
Also, warnings should come before you tell us to save and reboot. Not after.
