    I think a modern Betty boop should be super trendy and fashionable, given that she was basically made to represent the swing/jazz subculture of the time she came out in. The original cartoons were partial aimed at adults, so I would re-imagine her as a ultra cool adult cartoon/music video character. I think Cherry from Studio Killers is a good example of a modern Betty boop-like character.

      TheRiceandCake I completely agree with you. Most people believe that teen cartoon characters (especially females ) have to be all cutesy or something. The Betty Boop redesign feels more of a 10 year old girl than a 16 year old. I kind of feel like a modern show would be more Monster High or Winx Club-esque kind of? (If those can be considered more modern--)
    Like a fashion based show following her singing career. This sounded better in my head but idk, I just don't feel that redesign. Whoops

    • @koolkravings348
      @koolkravings348 5 лет назад +81

      Yeah I agree. I feel like most 16 year old girls wouldn't be like this in reality at all. I don't like how some kids shows make it seem like teens are happy-go-lucky or childish because it gives them a false outlook on the future...

    • @LavenderTowne
      @LavenderTowne  5 лет назад +172

      Hmm that's a good point, I kind of forgot about these like 'doll based' cartoons... I was feeling that they usually make characters seem younger than their age to be more approachable but maybe I went too young! But that's why I had the alternative version as well, so I could explore two possible angles on her in the modern age.

    Back then, if she was aimed to be a character made for adult content, why couldn't they make her character like a twenty year old? These days, children are hitting puberty earlier and earlier, but not even sixteen year olds look like Betty Boop's character design.

      You guys have to remember that in the 30s 16 was culturally considered being more in your early 20s. People quit high school to go to vocational school, it wasn't like it is now where you have to pass high school to then be accepted, so you could be 16, married, and have a full-time job. My mamaw got married at 14 and it wasn't considered at all uncommon. A lot of teenage girls were working in factories and whatnot. We had a huge depression on and people had to grow up fast. It was extremely common to be treated as an adult in your early teens. The word "teenager" doesn't even appear in the lexicon until the 1950s, decades after Betty Boop's inception. You went straight from "child" to "adult". Times were hard, people died young, the world was shit, and you just wanted to watch a cartoon to get your mind off the literal famine that was happening in the 30s. You had to grow up and get out of your parents' house as soon as you could because they literally couldn't afford to feed you. The culture was just vastly different. It was awful. We should all be really thankful to the people who have made strides in things like child labor laws, stagitory rape laws, a federally mandated age-of-consent, etc. We still have a long way to go, but we've improved vastly, and these cartoons help us see that. To be fair, state age-of-adulthood laws can vary and override the federal one, so you can, for example, get married at 14 in certain states, 16 in others. We still have a ways to go.
      Because the culture has changed and we have child labor laws and actually understand that people deserve a childhood- the best thing to do, if she was pitched today, would be to age her up to her mid 20s. Because now that's the age we see people being sexualized, or holding down jobs, or getting their own apartments, etc. Her cartoons only don't make sense with her being 16 because the culture has become so much better. Back in the day that really was just how life was.

    I feel like Betty boop would be better as an adult swim cartoon than as a show for kids just because making her so young makes her not the same character you could have her dancing and the show could have a cool story paying more modern songs in the background like they did back then I would give her shorts instead of a skirt and keep her top the same like it is on the old show I’ve been watching a lot of the old episodes they made with her and I just couldn’t see her being made into a kids show that’s just my opinion though

    Honestly, one of your weaker design videos. Coco was fine but Betty was really lost and Felix was just kinda lazy.
    Betty’s design, if she would be pitched today, wouldn’t be for a kids cartoon. It just wouldn’t. Her entire purpose was to be provocative and a bit of a sex symbol. Her dress, for instance, was a red dress cut at the thighs because that was the risqué dress of the day. With her being 16, it’s definitely odd, but my theory is that she was to represent when kids become “floozies” and succumb to lust. A lot of her cartoons involved hell and sin, so it’d make sense. Also, animation was geared towards everyone, and hers just happened to be geared at adults or kids who may “turn to the dark side”.
    I think her design would’ve been better in an adult swim type of style or an ageless demographic. Even a Simpsons design would’ve made more sense than this. She looks way too young and innocent. Maybe a rebel type look or a provocative teen idol like Brittany Spears in the early days.
    As for Felix’s design, it’s lazy and bad respectively. On the bad end, the only major change to Jake’s design was the color and ears. As for the Gumball look, it’s just Gumball with darker fur and a jacket. I think you focused too hard on the reference materials rather than adapting the character.
    The clothing idea makes sense, anthropomorphic animals with clothes are more popular and appealing. And basing the colors in the darker, cool tones was a nice design choice. However, the design and shapes are waaaay too TAWOG. It’s kinda jarring, especially next to the Betty Boop you made in your style.
    The route I’d go is maintain the proportions since they’re pretty standard, and could work in a geometric styled show. Like Powerpuff, Invader Zimm. or the Butch Hartman shows. Give him clothes that more match his curious, trickster attitude. And the muzzle isn’t necessarily needed, it was more of a guide for animation purposes, but it’s still an iconic look so I would keep it. Just not so slapped on. Honestly, with a stylized show that muzzle can stay without much of an edit.
    So yeah, that’s my critique. Idk if it was helpful but these designs really irked me for those reasons, hope you don’t mind LavenderTowne, love your stuff otherwise.
    (P.S. Gumball isn’t really a kiddy show. It’s waaaaay darker than you give it credit. Check out some of the new stuff, it’s pretty good and entertains my Adult Brain just as much as my kid brain if not more.)

Now coco i dont really have any issue with, but i do have issues with this redesign of betty and felix. starting with betty i can say that while your design is cute, it doesnt fit with how she was made back in the day. she wasnt made for just children, she was made more for a large array of people so i think the aged down look of her design is a bit too off the mark. and with felix the clothes or change in style didnt bother me, nor did the lightening of the black so much. the part that bothered me was the face in both designs you did. the reason that felix, mickey, and any other animals of that time have black bodies, large eyes, and a white muzzle is so that you can see the nose, eye expressions, and the mouth movements. they had a lot of limitations back then so that was the only way they could properly convey what they wanted the character to be feelings. i feel as tho with you keeping the lighter part just around his eyes and changing it to a blue grey colour it takes away from the original design and basically makes it a new character.
    with all that said i still love your videos and will continue to watch them, i just felt like this was something i had to point out as an animation student who actually just learned this in school.

      I agree wholeheartedly, Betty's redesign is a bit too off the mark.

      I agree as well, and with Betty Boop, I imagined a sorta Lorie from the Loud house-y vibe, like that overdressed social media teen vibe.

      @@IzzyRoseDoesArt That would have been a better design based on what she was in that time, with a bit of a softer edge since she is a softer goody toe shoes character

      I think her flaws is she draws whatever people recommend or quantity ideas without giving a thought or time in what she's designing. I saw her take on Frozen's Elsa and she had backlash on that too.

    For Betty Boop, it was very disturbing to look at, but it's mostly because she looks like a 6 year old on acid sugar rush. I think I'll try this old to new challenge myself, but for Betty boop, probably leaning more towards Winx Club or Milo Murphy.
    Edit: Thanks for the idea. I think Ill try all the new things introduced into the public domain this year.

      what's winx club? I'm looking for a new show to watch, and if you like Milo Murphy, you're my kind of person for tv show advise. :)

    • @demonheart13
      @demonheart13 5 лет назад

      Milo Murphy and Winx Club are very different. But if your going to look it up, definitely start with the original series, not the later series reboots. Tell original series had an overarching plot that builds little by little, the later seasons are when the show got too popular for its own good and you can tell some meddling for more merch has occurred.
      But if it doesn't have to be animation, I highly recommend strange days at Blake Holsey high to anyone who asks me for any show recommendation. You will feel real feels and laugh real laughs. But good luck finding every episode to the last season.

      @@demonheart13 wow, thanks! you wrote a lot more than I thought you would. :) BTW, is it family friendly? if it's a good show, I'd like to show it to my sisters, but some of them are pretty young.

    • @demonheart13

      @@adaliawright6891 Winx Club is great for younger viewers. Its about the good fairies and nights vs the dark witches from another school. Dark doesn't mean evil in the show, but the main villians are witches. The headmaster's of the two schools are in "friendly" competition with each other.
      Blake Holsey High is also family friendly, there isn't any cursing or violent bloodshed, but it is best for a nerdier audience who can catch the lame science puns the show is focused around. More middle to highschool relatable.

    Especially when it comes to Fleischer cartoons, I feel like the reason a lot of these characters might not translate well if made in the modern day is because back then cartoons were not as strictly considered a children's medium as they are now. The Fleischer brothers tended towards more experimental practices, like the rotoscope, setting their cartoons to jazz, and high use of surrealism. A lot of the Betty Boop cartoons especially were quite adult in nature -- not in a pornographic sense but more in a way that most children wouldn't get nearly as much out of them as an adult of the time would.

      On the other hand, a lot of children's cartoons lately has really upped the bar on what topics can be addressed, with Steven Universe handling trauma and abuse, My little Pony handling brainwashing and loss, and Star vs the Forces of Evil handling prejudice.

    Wow, as a teen who isn’t the typical string bean you see in cartoons, I can’t belive I didn’t notice how the industry makes all the teen characters so thin! That’s really interesting to bring up because I think that reinforces the idea that if you are a teen you need to be super thin to be attractive; I know I’ve felt that pressure, especially with many of my friends having that look. Thanks for bringing that up!
