Thank you for the video sir I would love too try and do my own hides I have really got in to skull mount deer for some people and love to see people face when they get there deer back and from the skull mount soo I got people wanted me too tann some deer hides and I think this video is really goin to help me sir thank you for the video
Glad to help sir. I made a tan video a few years back and it really helped a lot of people out (almost at 100k views). Of the questions people asked a lot I tried to detail answer those steps here. Hope they turn out great, and let me know how your hides come out!
You could learn how to ‘shave’ the hide thinner. Thin the hide towards the neck and spine where it’s thinner. Also sanding it down as shown can thin it a bit. But all I know is to make it soft you need to put the time in working it.
I’ve only tanned animals I’ve hunted. But, fleshing and pickling, tan formula, and stretching are all the same. I don’t know what tan products are available in Europe, it’ll take some searching, and everything done in a much larger portions.
Very easy to follow. Started on a hide this week, using this method except for pressure washing. I need to go back and hit some spots that I missed
Good luck, let me know how it turns out!
Thanks. Just got my first Elk and planning on using this method
I've seen hides tumbled in a wood barrel with wood chips and they turned out very soft and flexible.... after tanning just tumble slowly .
That’s cool
It was in a professional taxidermist shop . Hides from around the world were everywhere !

@@DanielGuillette yes sir I sure will thanks against
I'm curious but to get a hide that would be softer does it just depend on how long you work the hide? Super informative video though!

@@DanielGuillette gotcha, thank you for the info!
Your welcome
Is the process the same for horse hides?
I live in Europe and have difficulty to find tan products. Do you have any tips on this?

Is there such a thing as too much salt when salting?
No
Do you cover the bucket while it’s pickling?
No
Not needed unless you think critters might get into it??
Could you make the frame out of PVC pipe?
Maybe, but it would need to be rigid enough to put tension on the cape. Maybe 2-3” pipe would work.
How dose it look now
Like new
Would this process work for other animals like coons or coyotes?
Yes. For raccoon you’ll definitely want to rinse the hide with soap before salting to get oil off the hide.
@@DanielGuillette thanks!
pickle
What about the McKenzie leather oil? Did you apply that after the tanning solution. Thanks for making this video.
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve used the McKenzie leather oil on tans I want soft and flexible. This one here was intended to be a flat rug.
