Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF Drain & Fill Complete HD KIA Sorento 2011-2015
Just had to log in to comment (which I never do for anything). Richard, these videos are absolutely great! They are thorough, precise, and don't leave any room for questions. As everyone who has comment before me I am very appreciative of every video for the Sorento. I have a 2014 Sorento SXL myself and I have been able to do a lot on my own thanks to you. I work as a mechanic on marine applications and your tips are just what I needed to feel confident to work on my own vehicle. Thanks again for all the time and effort.
You are most welcome. I am glad to know I could help you. It's nice to see the job done right before you attempt it yourself for sure. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

I am an ASE Certified Mechanic. I have to say you did a really nice job there! Thank you!
Are Kia Transmissions reliable?
Thank you for showing us the process step by step and giving us the proper information like torque specs, Etc. I changed the ATF fluid for the first time on my 2011 Kia Optima with 117,000 miles. I wish I would have done it sooner but back then I couldn't find a video on how to do it for my car. Thank you!
Absolutely the best video about the Kia Sorento SXL.Well done.
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
This video will work with Kia Optima 2015 2.4L engine, great video instructions
High quality instructional, detailed and well done.
Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
My 2020 Sorento has the same exact set up with the exception mine has 8 speeds. Same casing and bolt locations. I'm actually going to enjoy doing this now. Thank you!
You're most welcome. Comments like this make my DAY! 😁️ I'm glad to know I could help you and that you got value from my work here. Thank you for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
I'm getting ready to do this on my sister's 2019 which is the same as your 2020. Was there anything in particular that you noticed was different once you actually did the oil change? I was also wondering why the banjo bolt was not aligned back to the original spot when tightening it on. Seems the holes in the bolts should align to the hose to allow oil to flow
Nice video. I just did a flush on my 2016 Sorento LX V6. One tip regarding the funnel and avoiding fluid backup/burping: stick a small plastic tube down the funnel. One end of the tube will go down inside the funnel and into the fill port on the top side of the transmission. The other end just sticks out the top side of the funnel and acts as an air vent while you pour in new fluid. You just pour in fluid along side of the plastic tube and down into the funnel. It allowed me to fill it much faster that way, and almost no spillage.
Also, I did a full flush by disconnecting one of the hoses going to the ATF warmer/cooler (the yellow-labeled one, if I recall correctly). On the V6 model, the hoses actually point straight down to the ground so you can just stick a bucket underneath it to collect the old fluid. You can run the engine to drain more fluid, and shut it off to stop draining. I replaced 1 quart at a time until the fluid coming out of the hose looked clean. After that, I basically did what you did in this video.. a drain and refill. That way the drain plug gets cleaned of metal shavings after all the old fluid has been flushed out. I'm obviously wasting some new fluid doing it this way, but it's still less costly than having a flush done by a pro tech.
Thanks for the great feedback. All the best.
first class video. I am sure that i am not the only one who appreciates the effort expended at making a quality video. You have my thanks. love the torque specs and pics of the manual.
You are most welcome. I am glad you noticed the extra effort. Thanks for watching and the very kind comments.
I'm suspecting my Kia dealer didn't change my trans oil (for what I paid for), so after this video I'm doing it myself. Thanks for the tutorial.
True, I cannot trust dealers anymore, now that I have 2 brand new Hyundais I DIY everything, and will DIY everything besides strut/shocks since I'm not familiar with them. I do my own oil changes, will do trans fluid changes, brake pad/rotors, sparkplugs, bulbs when due.
Such a helpful video. Own a 2014 Sorento LX with the 2.4, same tranny and procedure. Changed fluid at 116k (went by manual). Fluid came out black. Will do another flush after 1000k or so.
Reason I decided to change was your video. Thank you so much, video was extremely helpful.
You are welcome. You have reminded me it's time to do mine once again. I am glad I was able to help you. Thanks for watching and the kind comment. All the best.
Top video! I have now done my ATF in our MY13 Sorento but with the 2.2TDI engine that is slightly different to the video. The battery box covers the fill plug so it was too complex to take out the battery & its holder, so I drained the fluid just under 3 litres came out (dark as yours at 105,000Km where the dealer (stealer) dropped it also at 60K) and then filled it back up again via the oil level plug on the side with my $18 oil pump that screws into the top of the 4 litre plastic pack and took just over 3 litres when we checked the level. It was an hours work and saved me heaps and box shifts smoother. I used the Penrite ATF LV that is KIA/Hyundai approved full syn. I also use this same fluid in my Toyota SUV's as it also meets Toyota WS fluid.
Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Thank you for settling an argument with my husband lol. I knew he didn't know what he was talking about...
You're most welcome and thank you so much for commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. Glad to be of assistance. All the best.👍😀
Richard, I spent 30 minutes trying to find my dip stick on my Sedona before I finally called the Dealership thinking I had lost my mind. I had not heard of a "Closed System Transmission" and had not found your video at that time. The local Kia dealership said the same thing to me on the phone that the dealership told you on the phone call but the Sedona is every 60k miles to service the Transmission. When I asked how they did the service, they explained that they hook it up to a machine and flush it all. They quoted me $289 to service the transmission. There is a filter on the Sedona but it requires the pan in the front where your fluid level check plug is located to be removed and the filter is then accessible from there.
Unfortunately had already dropped my fluid, thinking, no problem, I will drop the fluid, and fill the fluid through the dip stick. After calling the dealership, they had me believing that I had no way to get the fluid back into the transmission. There is not a nice big fill plug like on the Sorento, right next to the battery but rather as described above, a small #6 allen fill plug all the way to the back of the transmission housing that had loctite applied to it. I had to take that air intake channel off and diconnect the air filter housing attached to the throttle body off the one side, pull the battery, the battery holder tray before I could find that little fill plug. I really appreciate you showing how to check the fluid fill level because the dealership lead me to believe that I could not and that I had to tow in my vehicle due to dropping the fluid already and let them service the transmission.

This is the link for the genuine Kia Sorento automatic transmission fluid pan, filter and fill level check plug.
Just did my 2016 Kia Soul+ yesterday; 39K on the clock. The ATF oil wasn't too bad and the magnet on the drain plug didn't have much accumulation, but I am glad I did it anyway. I have one more change to complete before winter. Then, maybe I'll change one gallon each year. Thanks for an excellent video!
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Kntryhart was the process the same or just drain a refill a gallon?
I just changed our 2018 Santa Fe Sport Ultimate 2.0 turbo trans fluid at 24,935 miles with Hyundai SP-III fluid. With engine cold, I first drained the fluid from the plastic plug and was surprised how much drained out (about a quart). Then, I drained the rest from the metal drain plug. Then, I carefully poured all the old fluid (mine was nice and red from mostly highway use) to an empty five quart jug of Mobile 1 synthetic. Then I took a new jug of Mobile 1 synthetic oil and put the new oil jug and the old fluid side-by-side. The old fluid was a tad higher level than the new oil's level so I drained a few ounces of the old fluid into the drain pan until both jugs were exactly level. Then, I measured the few ounces of old fluid that made the jug of old fluid more than 5 quarts. It was 3 ounces. After replacing the plastic level plug and the metal drain plug, I put 5 quarts of fluid into the fill hole using one quart bottles and then I poured 4 ounces more (one extra ounce for small amounts of fluid burped off fill hole and residual fluid left inside the five, one quart containers). I don't feel the need to drain any fluid out from the level plug since I know how much fluid came out and how much I added.
Thank you for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best. 👍😀
@@richardlloydusa ...from the plastic plug and was surprised how much drained out (about a quart)....
....I don't feel the need to drain any fluid out from the level plug since I know how much fluid came out and how much I added......
so it's wrong . he got lots of extra fluid ? he doesnt care about level.. and you just thumb him up
Best Hyundai transmission service video ever!
Thank you for your time ... it's very important that you help us with your nice demonstration of sorento ATF exchanges .. i wish to see the results after that ..was it exceeded with no harm later ... Thank you again .. wish you best regards.
I have many follow up videos on this and nothing but great results so far (Over 10 changes in total now) here are those videos: goo.gl/uDdGYj Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Great videoI just did the flush on my wife's 2014 Sorrento with 28000 miles. The oil was not too bad. It was still red. A bit darker than new. The magnetic drain plug did have a lot of metallic sludge.I don't understand why Kia does not make it mandatory to flush the transmission because the break in period obviously produces a lot metallic sludge. I agree with you doing a second flush .
+Christian Torress You are right on the metal filings. On my second drain and fill 5,000 miles after my first service there was considerably less fillings on the magnetic plug and I attribute that to the fact that at least two quarts of the original fluid was still left in the transmission after the first drain and fill. The fluid was pretty clean but not new red. I will do a video on the third drain and fill on my next oil change which will be another 5,000 miles. Thanks.
THANK YOU. This is such a great tutorial. I did this last night!!! This is such a great video for someone that has never done this before. It takes all the indimidation out of it!
didn't get to do the 10 minute drive yet and check because I had too many beers, lol. I am looking forward to doing that after I get done here at the office. My plan is to do the second drain after two weeks.
You are most welcome. It's a good idea to let the new fluid clean the transmission for a while. I do the exact same thing . The fluid is not cheap LOL. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Thanks for this detailed video. I changed my fluid at 63k miles yesterday on a 2017 kia forte using this video and the service manual for reference. The fluid and metal shavings on the drain plug looked the same as in your video. All is well now and shifting is noticeably smoother. Will repeat again soon. The only minor issue I ran into with my car is the fill port plug is obstructed by the neutral safety switch, which I had to loosen to make adequate clearance directly above it. Nothing difficult but I was uncertain about messing with it initially.
Great video. Max attention to detail makes it fool proof...
Thank you for watching and the kind words. I appreciate it. All the best.
Awesome video, very well done. I was able to complete the flush 100% Thank you!!
Top quality video, Richard, my compliments. Good lighting, good focus, and you were well prepared, no "um", "uh". Changing my ATF soon as weather cooperates, and yes, I'll do the same thing - rinse and repeat after a few hundred miles. On many of my older vehicles I got in the habit of, when doing an engine oil change, using a using a Harbor Freight hand pump to siphon out as much ATF as I could, measure the volume removed, and put in that same volume of fresh ATF. Even if it was only 2-3 quarts, that's 2-3 quarts of fresh ATF every couple thousand miles. But always my first two ATF changes were full open-the-drain-plug drains in order to get that crud off the magnet.
Thank you very much. It's nice to know your fluids are nice and clean. The transmission likes it too. All the best.
Thanks for the video! Been holdin off on the change because all shops want over $200 to do it. I did it myself for under $40. NOTE: on my 2011 Sorento 3.5L, the drain plug is partially blocked by the engine cradle. I couldnt use the socket i bought for it. I ended up using a channel lock to get it open and close it. Damaged the edge of the washer so i used my dremel to smooth it out to ensure it didnt affect my seal when tightened. Ill be buying a 24mm wrench for the next time unless i can find a shorter socket. Thanks again!
Also, our has 178k miles on it. Way overdue. Fluid looked like engine oil. Cant wait to do second change just to know its got more new than old in it.
You are most welcome. It may take a few to clean it up but it's well worth it. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Richard, I notice is the selling costs on the Trans fluid that are being sold there. Normally, I always found buying larger sizes to save money but it's opposite for this. The 3 gallon pack at almost $93 which then is like $31 per gallon then $7.75 per quart. The 6 quart box which is $6.50 per quart yet it's cheaper to buy 6 single quarts at $5.63/qt. However, I think your viewers would find a deal at Walmart get a huge savings. Walmart has the same Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle (ATF) Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid product at $17.87 for a gallon. It may be on sale from $21 but it's been priced like this for a while. Otherwise the same cost as Amazon for a single quarts at $5.63. Hope this helps some of your viewers, unless you get a cut from Amazon sales thru your video. Then I get it since you are going thru the trouble and time of making the videos for us.
Anyway, I also just want to give you a BIG THANKS for the very informative videos. Keep up the great work!! Your my goto guy on kia sorento's.👍
Cool to know where the deals are. Thank you. I'm all about people getting the best deal they can so I appreciate your feedback. Weird that it's cheaper by the small bottle than by the jug. I will have to check that out at W Mart.
Amazing detail and quality video on how to DIY replace the ATF. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Now this is a good video...you show every thing with details tank you so much
You're most welcome. I am glad to know I could help you. Thank you for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
I just did the oil change today as a matter of fact 😂... thanks again
Great video. I changed atf in my 2011 sorento 3.5 v6. I just measured what came out and put the same back in. 4.5 litres drained out.I did not open the level plug so had to add the atf SLOWLY from the top. In the 3.5 v6 transmission the top plug and level plug are metal not plastic.
thank you for going to the service manual and then back to your work. im servicing this transmission for the first time and this video is amazing. my Motor book wasn't helping too much.
This is truly a really great video Richard Lloyd. However, I want to point out that this is not the same procedure for a 2011 Kia Sorento EX model as I believe your vehicle is the Sorento XM model. The check fill plug is not like yours, mine was just a standard 24mm bolt. When you drain the transmission fluid on a 2011 Kia sorento ex series, the car needs to be flat yes and than you have to lift the car up, open the fill check bolt, and add your fluid back into the transmission and keep filling until you see a stream of the oil come out of that check fill hole.. Almost the same procedure, but for this particular job, the sorento ex is only slightly different.
Thank you for watching, the great comments and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Richard, I`m glad I found your second video now it makes more since to me. I realize I have been doing it wrong now. For starters I have been adding it threw the check fill hole but thats not my only error I noticed after watching your video
Thanks. I follow the recommended manufacturer's procedure so you should be fine following it. Thanks. All the best.
Great job. really enjoyed your presentacion and how you teach the whole process. Thank you
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Excellent Video, saved me $219.00 to have somebody unscrew 8 bolts for me, Thanks
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. All the best.
Hello Richard. Another excellent video. I was nervous about trying this myself (being a newbie DIY'er) , but after seeing your video, it looks like it will be no problem with my 2011 Sorento. Thanks much for your time and effort. It's a great help.
+Coco Joe You are most welcome. I can't recommend the long funnel strongly enough. It's a must have really. Thanks.
An outstanding video. I'll echo the statements of so many others in saying that it was pretty clear that you put significant effort into clearly explaining and demonstrating the entire process along with very valuable tips and warnings along the way. Very much appreciate your time in creating and sharing this.
You are most welcome. I am glad to know I could help you. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Great video 👍🏼 all other’s videos I’ve seen lack information

Thank you very, very much for the time and effort you put into making this video - it helped me tremendously in the knowing the details of making the fluid change. This was my first experience working with a 'sealed' transmission without a dipstick so there was a lot to know and learn in order to not destroy my Kia. Pouring the fluid very slowly through through the fill port was especially critical - as well as working with the level port - another thing that was new to me.
You're most welcome. I'm glad and happy to know I could help you. Thank you for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Great video thanks for posting, now I can do mine too!... one suggestion. I would have weighed the dirty mag plug then cleaned and weighed again... no loses on gloves and such
I would like to point out that I have a 2015 Optima which uses the same procedure and the Kia dealer wants 179.00 to drain and refill the transmission fluid. I know that Kia says the transmission fluid does not have to be changed until after 100k. I was a mechanic for 15 years and I don't believe in leaving ANY fluid in a car for 100k. Strangely, the 100k mark is supposedly when the warranty expires which means that you leave the trans fluid in until the warranty expires so Kia can sell you a new transmission. I will change my trans fluid every 30k. If I can't find some repair shop to perform this task for around 100.00 then I will wait until cooler weather (In Georgia) and do it myself (I am 66), so I move a little slower and I'm not in a hurry. So, to me, dealers are putting themselves out of business by charging exorbitant amounts of money for a simple drain and refill. Oh and thanks so much for the video Mr. Lloyd.
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Thank you so much for making this wonderful instructional video. This one of the best. Lighting, the detail and the extend of explanation each step. You can make a video on how to perform a surgery.
Thank you so much. Well executed. 🙏👍🇺🇸
You're most welcome. Comments like this make my DAY! 😁️ I'm glad to know I could help you and that you got value from my work here. Thank you for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Awesome job
Watch out for clicking the wrench too much. It actually over torques slightly with each click and could compromise an o ring on something important someday
Great job man
Thank you so much. Its very clear and useful video.
You are most welcome. Thanks for watching.
Just did this today on my wife's 2016 Hyundai Elantra. At first I thought I would hate that this Transmission did not have a dipstick. But I kinda like the plug method. Makes it a little easier in it's own way. But at the same time, I do like seeing on the dipstick that its at the proper level. Anywho, Thanks for this video. I didn't realize You need to check the levels after running the car at operating temperature. So now I have something to do later. :)
Thanks for the vid. you are saving me $150. Very well done.
Great video man.thanks for being detail oriented.
Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
This is a very well made video. Thanks

Awesome video, I wish you were working on my car. I am having troubles finding the fill hole for my 2011 Sportage 2.4L 2WD 6 speed manual transmission.
Thanks 😊
thanks Richard for this amazing video, bless you
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Thank you for sharing now i need to do my 2014 kia forte.
You are welcome. Thanks for watching. All the best.
Paul Pongos are kia sorento and kia forte have the same gearbox?
I can't verify that as I don't own a KIA Forte. Thanks.
If you happen to crack the plastic fill plug/bolt, go to Oreillys and have them make you a temp one from metal from a BMW Wheel lug bolt. I forgot what year/model it is from. Have them match the thread with the length of the bolt and put an O ring on it. It will work! And if you want OEM, go to KIA to get the proper one.
Thank you for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. My guess is they went with a plastic bolt to save the threads on the casing as the bolt wilI break first but your solution works just fine if it's not over tightened. I would also check your local salvage yard for it too. I would hope it would be a cheap part either way. All the best. 👍😀
@@richardlloydusa Thank you Richard! It was a Sunday afternoon, no salvage yards opened, and needed to drive about 350 miles the next morning. I stopped by a KIA dealer and got me one. I don't remember what the exact cost was, but it wasn't more than 5 dollars. It did the job and the KIA dealership was amazed at the ingenuity. It took both me and the Oreilly guy to figure out what we needed to make it work! I love your videos by the way!!
Awesome! No need to take chances if you don't have to. You're most welcome again. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I am happy to know you get value from my content. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍
This is a GREAT video but I think this is for a 3.5L. I have a 2.4L GDi and it's slighly different. In your video, you have access to the fill plug right away but on the 2.4L, I had to remove the Air Duct (same as you), the battery and the battery pan. then the video is the same.
For the pan under the car, I have 8 bolts + 4 push pin attached to the bumper + 2 push pin unter the bumper.
FYI, my push pin cannot be unscrewed, the phillips head is just for fun, I have to pull the middle piece and then everything pulls out. Hope that helps others.
great video - very helpful!
good video I like it it's all detail is this the same procedure 2014 Kia Sportage two wheel drive automatic transmission 6-speed thank you Richard
great job thank you
You're most welcome and thank you so much for commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
I appreciated the video and instructions. I have the LX 2.4 liter and will check if the same in locations and procedure.
You are most welcome. Please advise me if it is the same transmission or not as it will help others too. Thanks.

That transmission takes 5qts of type 4 fluid and the right way to check the level is with the engine running and engine temp at normal operation
so to check the level you have to have the motor on, drive for a bit to warm up, then put in park, leave it running, and take off the air duct chingaderra, n eyeball it to see if its filled to top? no dipstick... so weird
@@donnawilkerson2745 You access the drip level plug from below.
Thanks buddy. Appreciate it.
This is an outstanding video that is very thorough.
I have one question: I own a 2013 Sante Fe XL (Canadian coding) 3.3 L V6 and was wondering if it would be the identical procedure? Thank you.
You're most welcome. I would be guessing in this but I think it's similar. I see one on eBay(paid): ebay.us/sMNhLt and it looks very similar with the level port and fill port. Take a look at yours and see what you find. Thank you so much for commenting, watching and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Gracias por el video muy bien explicado lo aprendí muy bien 👍
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hello Richard This is a great video and information to me is gold. Thanks!!!
+climbjess nitro You are most welcome. Thanks for watching and the kind comments.
Great video and well explained. I do have one ?. How come you didn't changed the transmission filter?.
The filter is an internal steel mesh filter that requires you to dissemble the transmission to replace. Also it's a course filter meant to catch large debris like metal shavings from the machining process of the gears. Kia/Hyundai does not recommend replacing it and that makes sense because if that filter were to actually get clogged up with debris your transmission probably already self destructed and the filter would not be your first concern. Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
This is probably the best video I have ever seen on how to do an ATF change. Thank you!
On the subject of Kia Sorentos, do you or anyone out there have ANY ideas on how to soften the really harsh ride of my 2011 Sorento? We feel every little bump on every road. Very uncomfortable ride.
Thank you very much. Changing the suspension springs for softer springs would make the ride more soft as well as a higher profile tire as well. I would discuss these changes with your dealer to make sure it is safe to modify your vehicle in any way. Thanks.
Lew James check your tires pressure. it could be too high. it happened to me.
Awesome insightful video !
I did fluid check and maybe half liter came out. I drained and filled 5 L per procedure and added 700 mL for the fluid check. Two liters came out from the check port over two minutes. I hope that's ok. It seems to drive just fine.
As long as the level was checked by using the port then you have the correct amount of fluid in the transmission. You never know how it was done last time, even if it was the dealer or factory. So did they over fill it or under fill it? No way to tell. But the proof is in how it's working. As you stated,"it drives just fine." Thank you so much for commenting, watching and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Great video by the way!
excellent video
thanks so much +Richard Lloyd, useful information for me.
I'm users Kia Carens 2013 from Indonesia (may be called Rondo in other countries). I wish I could do it later when needed. Instead of having to KIA authorized workshop, is more saving money I'm doing myself.
+Febi Aditya Prathama Great! Thanks for watching and commenting.
+Richard Lloyd totally how many litres fill up to transmission?
+Febi Aditya Prathama Total will be 7.8 L or (2.06 U.S gal.,8.24 U.S.qt., 6.86 Imp.qt.) But you will not be able to drain all of it as the design always leaves a few litres behind. Here is the manual page www.ksmanual.com/lubricants-564.html Thanks.
Sehr gut 👍🏽
Danke nochmal. 👍😀
Fabulous , I have Kia Sorento 2015 engine 3500 is this the same method used for that model? I hope you upload a video about how to change ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid for this model in details with my thanks for your great efforts.
I have a video for the KIA Sorento 2014 which is the same model as your 2015 Sorento. Here is the video: ruclips.net/video/axjtiG1nnQ4/видео.html thanks.
Thank you I will be doing mine soon but something I happened to think about while watching the video is that excess brown left in the filter and should that be changed at the same time
The internal filter in this transmission is a steel mesh filter. It would only catch larger metal particles and KIA does not recommend replacing it. Really if it's clogged you have some very serious issues. BTW I have never changed it and I have had no issues with any of the transmission I've done the service on. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. Subscribe, Click The Bell and stay tuned! All the best.👍😀
Also Richard, when you first opened up the fill port it looked as though there was an open radiator hose. Was I seeing that right? Cause I didn't notice it when you screwed the fill port plastic bolt back on. We're you doing a radiator flush at the same time?
Another thing, your car is like impeccably clean... lol I love It!
No I was not doing a radiator service at the same time so I'm not sure what it is you were seeing. It might just have been a camera angle. I am fortunate to live in one of the driest states in the Union and also snow free too. I do keep it clean but It's pretty easy to do so here. When I lived in Canada it was impossible.
Thank you so much for commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
THANK YOU
You are most welcome. Thank you for watching, commenting and the kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Before my question, I'd thank you very much for this super skillful video,... But i want just know if it's recommended to change the filter? If there is one, because i have Alamos the same car : kia sportage 2012 the same gear box position..
Thank you in advance 😊
Richard, many thanks for the video, when and how can I change the filter of the transmission? Is it mandatory to change the filter? if I do flushing as you do is this enough so I can keep the old filter?
Nice video, but not clear for me if engine should be running when you check the ATF level at 140 F
Thanks ; however '
You should mention ;
tighten auto transaxle
drain plug to 35.40 lb ft .
Foot pound .👍
Need to add the vehicle needs to be running in park to check fluid level..also need to check transmission temp with a Scan tool..
Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Thanks
Hello Richard!
In my country, you can change transmission fluid with a special pump at some service centers. And you don't need to unscrew any bolts, the pump has two transparent plastic hoses. One hose is connected to inlet line and another hose is connected to outline line. The pump has a container which is filled with new clean transmission fluid. So the procedure is following: pumps injects new fluid into transmission through inlet line, and old used fluid comes out from outlet line. You keep doing this until you see a clean nice fluid coming out from outlet line. This work is performed while engine is on (working engine).
What do you thing about this type of transmission fluid replacement? I am not sure, but I think this method is better comparing to yours since you will be able to replace all used fluid. Thank you in advance!
This is a common way to "flush" the transmission. I can't recommend it for a few reasons. First of all how do you know if you have the correct amount of fluid in the transmission after doing the "flush"? Second you never actually remove the magnetic drain plug to clean off the metal fragments that collect on it. The plug does help to keep the transmission fluid clean so cleaning it is a good idea. If you follow my procedure, you end up with much cleaner fluid, you clean the magnetic plug and you ensure that you have the correct level of fluid in your transmission. Thanks.
Thanks for your recommendation Richard! This service center said that they will adjust the fluid level at the end by opening the fluid level plug. Then they will also clean drain plug (magnet bolt). If that's true, what you think which method is better your or their? Thank you again Richard!
I can't really say if it is better or not. My method is the KIA recommended service procedure for changing the fluid. It does not require any disassembly of the transmission components other than the drain, fill and level ports (which are there for that specific purpose). The fluid coolant lines are there to transfer fluid hot fluid to the cooler and back. I have to ask why KIA does not recommend the coolant line flush? Again I can't recommend a procedure that KIA does not recommend. Here is the procedure from the KIA service manual: www.ksmanual.com/fluid_replacement-579.html Thanks. All the best.
Great video, very helpful and informative with clear instructions! I have a 2011 XM Diesel 6sp AT...I wonder if it is the same grearbox and procedure?
Take a look at your transmission and compare it to what you see in the video. Many KIA's and Hyundai's (Same company) use this transmission. Verify by calling your local KIA dealer's service department they should be able to verify the specs for you. Thanks for watching. All the best.
Hi Richard I had a look and things are a bit different, but somewhat the same lol. Here is a photo of the bottom www.kiaownersclub.co.uk/forum/uploads/23868/Transmission.jpg
I noticed on the top there is the fill plug, but it does not have the square 3/8" drive plug in it like yours does. Also there is a breather line with a plug that is easier to access, can you fill using that? I noticed that yours has it as well
Thank you!
Great video, super helpful! Do you happen to have a video on how to properly change the coolant?
I have not done it yet but I am sure the service limit is quickly
approaching and I will do a video on it as soon as it does. Here is the
procedure from KIA
www.ksmanual.com/coolant_refilling_and_bleeding-270.html I would
strongly recommend that you use only the KIA cooling fluid to be safe.
Yes it is expensive but it is made specifically for these engines.
Thanks.
These cars seem to be pretty picky about being even a bit overfilled. A tiny stream of fluid indicates proper level. If the stream is too much, it's too full.
Agreed. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Well done, thanks how can we replace all the oil of Kia Sorento 2015 6 cylinder
Great video, but not applicable to a 2011 Sorento V6 2WD. This vehicle does not have a fill plug on the top of the transmission. It can be drained in the same fashion as in the video, but can only be refilled through the check plug on the front of the transmission pan.
In addition, only 3.8 quarts drained out and it took exactly that much to refill before dribbling out.
Thank you for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.
Great video. Thanks for the torque info and sizing. Wondering if this can be done on the ground. I only have two jack stands and one floor jack so not sure how to keep it level w/out jacking up and down a bunch.
It may be possible but it would be very tight and uncomfortable to do. Taking the bottom engine cover off on the ground would not be my idea of fun with the vehicle on the ground. It is far better to lift the vehicle to do this service in my opinion. Thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
The color is more than normal. ATF has a red dye simply to identify it from normal engine oil. It's normal the dye doesn't last a whole lot. Brown ATF is nothing crazy. It's when it's darker and has metal shavings that's it's time to react like that.
Kinda curious, the instructions don't say to turn car off. I noticed you had the car off when doing the fluid level adjustment.
The instructions on that are not really clear so it's open to interpretation. The procedure I show in the video is the one I have followed now in over 15 drains and fills on 6 different vehicles Hyundai and Kia without a single problem with any of them. Now I don't see anything wrong with doing it either way so it's up to your own discretion. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
Thanks for this clear and good video> Is it necessary to empty the whole oil in the gear box 7.8 liter? or follow your instruction in this video
Follow the instructions in this video. What he's saying is that when you drain the transmission fluid, only about 5 quarts will actually come out. The other 2.8 quarts is still inside the internal components of the transmission and will NOT drain out. So when you add the new fluid, you should only add about 5 quarts.
Great video! One questions though, On the process of shifting the gears from P to D and D to P, did you drive it around to let the transmission heat up to 140 first before doing that? Or did you shift the gears at idle first then go drive it around?
Great question!!! That's the process I'm curious about that's not mentioned
