While filming "Blazing Saddles" , Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder had a conversation about an idea Gene had for a movie. He told Mel it would be about the grandson of Victor Frankenstein (who famously pronounces the last name as Fronk-un-schteen because he’s embarrassed of his family’s legacy). He finds out that he’s inherited the family castle and needs to go claim it. When doing so, he finds his grandfather’s books and decides that bringing a monster to life isn’t such a bad thing after all. Brooks loved the idea and wanted to work on it. Wilder responded that he could on one condition-he couldn’t be in it. “I said, ‘Am I such a bad actor?’’ says Brooks. “He said, ‘No, but you’re always breaking the fourth wall, and you’re always surprising, and there’s a lot of anarchy in you. I don’t want it to be a crazy comedy. I want it to be a real movie with natural comedy,’” says Brooks. “I said, ‘You’re absolutely right. That’s the way we’ll do it.’”
My favourite "line" in the movie is a sight gag. They are at dinner and Inga tells the Doctor, "you haven't even touched your food." And Gene Wilder's Dr. paws his food. Also, The Inspector's monocle is worn OVER his eye patch!
I once went with my 80-something year-old father to a vascular surgeon to see if they could get better circulation in his legs, and the doctor told him to 'hop up' on the exam table. As you can imagine and old man with a walker, he struggled, and I said "nice.....hopping" and the doc could barely contain himself. It was just the right thing to say at that moment. It is one of my memories of him that I will always be with me. Can't tell you how many times I saw this fine work of art. This was also one of the few movies that Mel Brooks does not have a cameo role in. Of all his movies, I think this has the most one-liners that I still use to this day. Terri Garr was in Mr Mom and Tootsie, to name a couple. Too hard to pick out a favorite line, but to name a few...Walk this way, There wolf, there castle, Put the candle back, A little paint, a few flowers, a couple of throw pillows, Could be worse - it could be raining, Brandy warm milk Ovaltine
Yes that is Phoebe's mom. Teri Garr. Her first staring role was in an episode of Star Trek. It was intended as a spinoff series but it never caught on. Her role as Pheobe's Mom was her last role. She retired from acting for medical reasons.
Madeleine Kahn (Elizabeth) and Kenneth Mars (the Inspector) are hilarious in Peter Bogdonavich's "What's Up, Doc" - a homage to the great screwball comedies of the thirties, particularly "Bringing Up Baby"- Barbra Streisand in the Katharine Hepburn role & Ryan O'Neal in the Cary Grant role. Well worth a react after spooky season.
One of my favorite Mel Brooks movies! Another great one is High Anxiety. Teri Garr is indeed Phoebe’s mom. She was also in Close Encounters, Mr. Mom, Tootsie and many other classics. Madeleine Khan was in several Brooks movies and was a comedy legend. She also had an amazing voice. She had to pretend to not be able to sing in Blazing Saddles.
I'll always remember Teri Garr from the Star Trek episode 'Assignment: Earth' where she plays a secretary sent to temp for a guy who's actually from the future. Kirk and Spock get involved. It's a hoot and really should have been a series. A young me had all sorts of strange new feelings about Teri Garr . . . 😊
Especially since she doesn't like Frankenstein. Peter Boyle is great in this. So is Teri Garr. And of course, Cloris Leachman with the sausage. Also Madeline Kahn. Died way too soon.
@farscape I remember seeing it. It was slow going although I can't remember exactly how old I was. Maybe 8. They did a great job with some of the scenes, like the Little Girl was throwing flowers in the water, so the monster put her in the water because he thought pretty things belong into the water. That's why it was such a big thing, and the thunder and lightning was big in the scene, and the Frankenstein said "IT'S ALIVE!" like that. Also Madeline Khan was literally transformed into the Bride of Frankestein, with the exact hairstyle after her um...encounter with the monster. Bride of Frankenstein was a sequel to Frankenstein though.
One of your best reactions ever! That was the original lab equipment from the 1931 Frankenstein. Teri Garr, who played Inga and Phoebe's Mom on Friends, went to my high school, though she was ten years ahead of me. You guys should watch Young Frankenstein Movie Documentary (with Mel Brooks). Right here on RUclips and only a half hour long.
The wooden arm is a reference to a character from "Son of Frankenstein": Inspector Krogh, who had an artificial arm because Frankenstein's creature ripped his real arm off when he was a child.
I'm happy you liked it 🙂 Mel Brooks actually bought the electrical machines used in the original Frankenstein movie and used it as the actual set we saw there. Inga is actually Phoebe's mom. Madeline Kahn, I miss her a lot, she died of cancer some years ago. She and Marty Feldman acted together again in "Yellowbeard", I recommend you watch it some day. My favorite scenes are the ones where the girls sing "Oh, sweet mistery of life at last I found you" 😂 Great video guys, laughed a lot!
During the making of his other classic, Blazing Saddles, Mel Brooks made one condition with Gene Wilder. Mel promised that he would not be in this movie, just directed it. Out of all iconic actors and actresses except Mel and Teri Garr, Mel is still living today at the age of 96. Teri is 77.
Mel was the voice of Victor's corpse. Pretty sure he originally planned on playing the blind guy as well but gave the role to Hackman who agreed to do it for free because he often played tennis with Wilder.
It's still a great movie even after 48 years. My mom took me to see it when I was a little kid when it was re-released in I think about 1980. Mel was in he was the cat yowling during the dart throwing scene. That was Terri Carr who played Inga. And Madiln Khan.
@@michaelmulherin9952 Yeah I realized the misspelling after I posted and was taking my shower.. I remember seeing her in Mr. Mom with Micheal Keaton. Then I saw her in an old episode of Star Trek.
I was listening with earbuds when the Mrs died laughing when the Mr said that "you two have a lot in common." I burst out laughing so hard, and couldn't explain to my husband easily... Best reaction ever, guys! Have yall reacted to The Abyss?
"You two have a lot in common". Well played sir! Inga played by Teri Gar was in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and had many parts in TV series. My favorite line is Igor surprising Frederick and Inga by the skulls and sings and then calls him "Froderick " instead of Frederick.
I love this film. Every time I visit my mom, I knock on the door and yell, "Put... the candle... back!" You guys should check out more Mel Brooks films.
Gene Hackman learned about the film through his frequent tennis partner Gene Wilder and requested a role, because he wanted to try comedy. He volunteered to play the Blind Hermit for free. It was four days of shooting for about four minutes of running time.
Love, love this movie! A little factoid- Marty Feldman kept moving the 'hump' around while filming the movie. That's why Gene asked if it was on the other side! Gene Hackman was brilliant, as well as Peter Boyle and the rest of the cast!
This was the best reaction you two have done. Tons of laughs and I loved Mr. Movies "You have a lot in common with her " to Mrs. Movies and Mrs. Movies "You're disgusting." in between laughs in response. Mr. Movies was on fire this reaction. My favorite character is Igor and my favorite scene is the Put it on the Ritz performance with the Frankenstein Monster. So many funny moments and great actors and actresses in this movie.
There was a terrible short lived comedy called "Struck by Lightning" on CBS that was about a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein who inherits the castle (which is struggling to survive financially as a hotel) and the caretaker (played by Jack Elam) who is actually Frankenstein's monster. The only joke in the series that I laughed at was when the descendant sees that the monster is afraid of fire and asks "You're afraid of fire?" The monster says "You would be too if you had been chased by a mob of angry villagers with pitchforks and torches!" Then the descendant asks "When did THAT happen?" and the monster replies "When DIDN'T it happen?"
If possible see the birthday performance that Ray Romano and Brad Garrett did for Peter Boyle, where they did "Puttin on the Ritz" in full tie and tails (and Garrett impersonated Boyle as the monster)!
My first time on you all channel. As the credits rolled you two saw this movie is ALL comedy heavy hitters. No light weights. Mel is a superstar. Everything he has done is great. "Walk this way."!!! A bit of trivia - Marty/Igor moved the hump from one side to another thru out the flick. Classic fun!
37:16 Yes, Teri Garr was Phoebe's mom... She was also in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Oh, God!" and "Mr. Mom" and "Tootsie" and did a ton of TV appearances in the 80s and 90s... She was always a great guest on "The David Letterman" show and she hosted "Saturday Night Live" multiple times... I had the biggest crush on Teri Garr when I was growing up! 😍
So GLAD you recognized Gene Hackman. When I saw this in 1974 in the theaters I recognized him instantly (mostly by his voice), and then read how nobody had recognized him. I've heard that for years. It was pretty lonely. Now just ONE other person recognized him immediately. I'm so happy I'm not alone!
This movie was a huge classic in my family, and as kids we were obsessed with Friends - but I NEVER spotted that the actor is Phoebe's mom! (Looked it up: Teri Ann Garr.) Thanks for this revelation! :D
Watching you two be so playful was a great part of this. Mel Brooks is in this, he makes the wolf howls. Also, others may have told you, they actually borrowed many of the props from the original Frankenstein.
I love Young Frankenstein. I love the fact that Peter Boyle plays the monster. Fun fact, in a halloween episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, Peter Boyle's character Frank actually dresses as Frankenstein's monster lol
Fun(?) facts: There were several callbacks to the original Frankenstein movies. For example, Madeline Kahn's bouffant hairdo is from "Bride of Frankenstein." Also, in the original Frankenstein from 1931 the Monster throws the little girl into the lake. Before there was Monty Python, Marty Feldman performed with John Cleese and Graham Chapman in a 1948 sketch entitled "The Four Yorkshiremen."
If you like this, try "History of the World, Part 1" and "Life Stinks" by Mel Brooks. Also, "Love at First Bite" and "Murder By Death" are two more classic comedies. "Silver Streak", with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor is another great movie, both funny and suspenseful.
Fun fact: A lot of the equipment in the lab set was actual original pieces from the 1931 Frankenstein lab set. Also, Phoebe's mom could elevate me anytime.
I love the scene where Cloris Leachman as Frau Blucher is offering Gene Wilder a nightcap. The way she pivots back to him each time with a different suggestion and her facial expressions when he says no. She's playing an old maid, but I found that character very funny and strangely sexy.
Mrs. Movies, so good to hear/ see you laugh so much. This was one of my father's favorite movies. We watched it whenever it was on. Hope you and your family have had a good weekend. Greetings from Indianapolis.
I saw this in the theater on a rerelease when I was about 10 years old so a lot flew over my head. I probably watched it 25 times before I caught the candles not being lit joke. Still hilarious! It was great to see you guys enjoy it so much. My favorite Mel Brooks movie.
Good catch on recognising the actress who played Phoebe's mother from Friends. She was also in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The other actress who played Fredrick's fiancee (Madelyn Khan) was also in Blazing Saddles.
Inga is Teri Garr. She's been in a lot of things. She was Richard Dreyfuss's wife in "Close Encounters of the third kind". And she was in "Dumb and Dumber", "Mr. Mom" (with Michael Keaton) and she was in "Tootsie". And of course she was Phoebe's mom on friends.
If you watch all of the original Universal Frankenstein movies, Young Frankenstein is even more hilarious because all of those secondary characters are spoofs on characters from the movies. And, Teri Gar has been in lots of things including as Phoebe's mom.
Gene Wilder & Gene Hackman were also both in the 1967 landmark movie ''Bonnie & Clyde''. Madeline Kahn & Cloris Leachman are both my favorite comedy actresses, Cloris is also hilarious in another Mel Brooks movie ''High Anxiety'' (a Hitchcock parody), which also stars the great and gorgeous Madeline Kahn. Teri Garr has btw an amazing filmography, first appearing in Elvis Presley movies in the early 60s and from then on in so many tv shows and classic movies.
I've been in kind of a dark place for a few days now, weeks even. I just want to thank you both, especially Mrs. Movies, your laughter is truly infectious. You both have brightened my day
Yes, Mrs. Movies, that is the same Teri Garr who played Phoebe's mom. She also played Roberta Lincoln in the Star Trek episode "Assignment: Earth." She starred in "Close Encounters, " "Mr. Mom," "Tootsie," and far too many other films and television shows to list here. She is credited with about 140 roles between 1963 and 2011.
Transylvania is in Romania Madeline Kahn’s grey streaks and big hair at the end was a reference to The Bride of Frankenstein. The best part of these reactions is Mrs’ laugh!!
Transylvania is a real place in the Romanian countryside. It is a small peaceful village. Dracula was based on a Romanian ruler named Vlad Tepist. I may have spelled his name wrong. He got the nickname Vlad The Impaler because he would impale his enemies on stakes.
I wish that there were more Mel Brooks films that Mrs. Movies hasn't already seen. This has been by far one of my top favorite videos by you two in a while. Also, that's saying that without your kids popping in which is always a joyful distraction.
A perfectly cast film, everyone is an A-list comedian, and the Gene Hackman bit might have been the funniest part. You guys were hilarious too. Transylvania is in Romania, or at least it used to be, not sure where the borders are now. It's funny, cause Frankenstein is German, and Kenny Mars is doing an exaggerated German accent, and the frau in Frau Blucher is basically the German term for Mrs. in English. Teri Garr around this time was very, how can I put this delicately? Woof.
Great film. This was my first purchased DVD. I didn't even have a player yet, so all I could do for weeks was hold the disc up to the light and watch the pretty colors. 😂
This is my favorite comedy. One thing I love about it is that it references "Son of Frankenstein" along with the other main Universal Frankenstein classics I grew up watching on TV. "Son of Frankenstein" was my favorite as a kid. While the continuity doesn't really work, Gene's character is basically the grandson character from SoF and the kid coincidentally had light curly hair very similar to Gene's. By the way, the Taffeta joke isn't that he thought that was her name, but that he thought it was a romantic word and repeated it back to her as if he knew what it meant.
It was Phoebe's mom. Lisa Kudrow clearly had been imitating the comedic style of Teri Garr all along so casting Teri as Lisa's mom was a no-brainer. Garr was previously in The Conversation, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Tootsie. And, waaaay back in the 1960s, Teri was a backup dancer in several Elvis movies - see ruclips.net/video/1IOGVbOQuvU/видео.html for highlights of Teri with Elvis.
Terri Garr played Phoebe Abbott in "The One At The Beach", where she eventually discloses to Phoebe Buffay that she's her birth mother, and appeared in "The One With The Jellyfish" and "The One With Phoebe's Uterus".
Hi Mr and Mrs movie I really enjoyed watching your reaction together to Young Frankenstein this is one of my favorite Halloween '90s movies I used to watch this all the time my dad I remember going to a play watching this movie and people are acting as the characters from the movie it looked exactly the same as the movie a little bit different I wonder when next Halloween movie you will react to.
The metal arm constable was played by Kenneth Mars. He and Cloris Leachman starred as the grandparents in Malcolm in the Middle. Teri Garr (Inga) was the wife in Close Encounters Of the 3rd Kind and Mr. Mom, but her role as Sandy in Tootsie is what I always think of when I think of her
I'm leaving a comment before I watch your reaction. When this movie came out on HBO, in the 70s, my father and I watched it a couple of times together. We laughed like all get out. I don't know if you have seen the original Frankenstein movie. But there are a number of jokes that won't be as funny if you haven't seen the original. That being said, this was the first movie of it's kind that I ever saw. I was about 10 years old when I saw it. I still have quotes from this film, that I'll use on occasion. Peace!
They no joke used the actual set from the original Frankenstein movie in this one. It's the same lab set from the 1930s that was still intact at Universal.
You are indeed correct, that inga is played by the same actress who played phoebe's mother , Teri Garr Mel Brooks did the cat noise when they were playing darts.
The elderly patient that was used in the experiment at the beginning of the film, was played by the actor who played the minister in "Blazing Saddles".
I cannot hear Putting On The Ritz without thinking of this version anymore, I always just want to shout at the right places.

Me too! "Do not use this brain!"
Watch the producers best and first mel Brookes movie
A young me had all sorts of strange new feelings about Teri Garr . . . 😊
If you listen to Marlene Dietrich sing, Madeline Kahn nailed it.
Yes! It's great to see the Mrs.smiling in October! One of the best comedies ever made.❤❤❤
Especially since she doesn't like Frankenstein. Peter Boyle is great in this. So is Teri Garr. And of course, Cloris Leachman with the sausage. Also Madeline Kahn. Died way too soon.
@knoahbody69... Thats her name!! I was trying to remember it. She was great in "Beerfest". Where she also did some funny stuff with sausage lmao
@@GeneralBuckNaked I think Trey and Matt know what sells.
@farscape That was a crazy movie.
Teri Garr also did an episode of Star Trek: TOS.
@@DocMicrowave The "Gary 7" episode ( I forget the ep. title ), one of the coolest.
@@treetopjones737 It was "Assignment: Earth". One of my favorite episodes.
They just saw Teri Garr in "Mr. Mom."
Yeah, Yellowbeard's great !!! One of my faves !!!
During the making of his other classic, Blazing Saddles, Mel Brooks made one condition with Gene Wilder. Mel promised that he would not be in this movie, just directed it. Out of all iconic actors and actresses except Mel and Teri Garr, Mel is still living today at the age of 96. Teri is 77.
Mrs. is correct that is Phoebe's mom played by Teri Garr.
And Madiln Khan.
terri garr actually
@@michaelmulherin9952 Yeah I realized the misspelling after I posted and was taking my shower.. I remember seeing her in Mr. Mom with Micheal Keaton. Then I saw her in an old episode of Star Trek.
@@michaelmulherin9952 And Madeline Kahn
@@michaelmulherin9952 Teri Garr, actually.
One of the most quotable movies ever!! Love it!
btw Mel Brooks was the dad of the little girl who got launched off the seesaw.
Mel Brookes voiced the screaming cat that gets hit with a dart.
I love this kind of info. You wont find any actors doing that type of stuff nowadays
Love, love this movie! A little factoid- Marty Feldman kept moving the 'hump' around while filming the movie. That's why Gene asked if it was on the other side! Gene Hackman was brilliant, as well as Peter Boyle and the rest of the cast!
The assistant is Teri Garr. She's been in a ton of movies. Tootsie, Mr. Mom, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, to name a few.
First time I saw her was in the Star Trek (original series) episode "Assignment: Earth"
I love that you recognized him as Raymond's dad!
Teri was also in six Elvis Presley movies, "The Conversation" with Gene Hackman, and the original Star Trek episode, "Assignment: Earth."
She was also part of the cast of the Sonny and Cher show.
The espresso comment was actually added by Hackman.
This movie was a huge classic in my family, and as kids we were obsessed with Friends - but I NEVER spotted that the actor is Phoebe's mom! (Looked it up: Teri Ann Garr.) Thanks for this revelation! :D
This was Teri's big breakout, she was in her early twenties.
She said she had her mother help pad her tops. What knockers? 😂
@@benjamineckles She wasn't in her early 20s, she was 30 when the movie came out.
Fun(?) facts:
There were several callbacks to the original Frankenstein movies.
Agreed. I can't wait for someone to do Murder By Death.
Love at First Bite such a good movie.
Fun fact: A lot of the equipment in the lab set was actual original pieces from the 1931 Frankenstein lab set.
Also, Phoebe's mom could elevate me anytime.
Madeline Kahn was so awesome! She made Mel's movies that much better! R.I.P.♥
14:45 That part was never scripted. Marty switched the humps without telling anyone.
Transylvania is very real. It's a region in Romania.
"Pardon me boy, is this the Transylvania station?"
"Ja, Ja!!!! Track number nine. By the way, can I give you a shine?"
Yes, that's "Phoebe's Mom."
Fun fact: She also played Ursula's mom.
"You have a lot in common with her".
😂😂😂
That is indeed Phoebe's mom, actress Teri Garr
Reportable her first appearance was on the original StarTrek. And appeared on Rowan and Martin's Laugh In, totally awesome comedian!
A very nice movie to react to would be "memento" from Christopher Nolan!
"I was gonna make Expresso"
"If only I had pipes like that...' Me too lady, me too. LOL.
Love this movie! Your reactions were awesome. Teri Garr was also in Tootsie and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
And Mr. Mom
And Scorcese’s After Hours. Put that one on your list. Also one of Letterman’s favorite guests. Sadly sidelined by MS. Her memoir is great.
All the laboratory equipment used in the original "Frankenstein", made by Dennis Strickfadden, was loaned to Brooks and was used in this film.
Mrs. Movies has the best laugh!
I been on many job sites and been using that line “Could be worse could be rainin “ for decades!
Brilliant, can't wait .. one of my favourite movies ...enjoy !
I've been in kind of a dark place for a few days now, weeks even. I just want to thank you both, especially Mrs. Movies, your laughter is truly infectious. You both have brightened my day
So much fun watching this with you guys…
PUTTIN ON THE RITZ!!!
She is Phoebe's mom, also she is in Mr Mom with Michael Keaton, Star trek, and a huge list of other movies and TV roles. Her name is Teri Garr.
What hump?
Pryor & Wilder "See no evil, Hear no evil", "Stir Crazy"
Love this movie, so hilarious! I believe they found all the old "original" Frankenstein equipment packed away in a warehouse on the lot.
Transylvania is in Romania
Madeline Kahn’s grey streaks and big hair at the end was a reference to The Bride of Frankenstein.
It's Tepesh. Vlad Tepesh. :)
Also, only one Madeline Kahn. Absolute legend, died long, long before her time.
Mr. Hilltop (nice hopping) is also Reverend Johnson from Blazing Saddles played by Liam Dunn.
Mom, but her role as Sandy in Tootsie is what I always think of when I think of her
Marty Feldman, another comedy legend on his own!
All great especially Madeline Kahn she’s so funny, saw this in the theater all timer favorite, thanks again!
the monster was played by Peter Boyle, who was also good in "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" and especially, "Outland" with Sean Connery.
This is the one! BEST MOVIE REACTION REVIEW BY A COUPLE OF ALL - TIME.... subscribed!
You are indeed correct, that inga is played by the same actress who played phoebe's mother , Teri Garr
Mel Brooks did the cat noise when they were playing darts.
The elderly patient that was used in the experiment at the beginning of the film, was played by the actor who played the minister in "Blazing Saddles".
21:00 "Better than a buttonfly."
48 years later and new jokes out every day for this film. :)
Yes, Inga was Teri Garr....Phoebe's mom. She was also in Mr. Mom and Tootsie.
