My lovely sweet late husband taught me this song to play on the organ at the church because he didn't feel well enough to play himself. I didnt know the song so he took me through it lovingly and patiently many times until I had learned it by heart. Such precious memories and a precious hymn for a precious Lord.
My favorite verse. "Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God." Reminds me of when I was in church kneeling in prayer and felt and saw as the presence of God entered my heart. I love the part that they say "Jesus sought me when a stranger" it just tells me that even if we are strangers we can be family, friends even. Jesus loves all, so can I.

I cry every time. I have a 2 year old granddaughter who sings it. I have to hide because I don't want to confuse her, but how can a 2 year old sing this whole hymn with words she hasn't heard in tune and so amazing. Such a gift to me.

I could remember the grace of my Lord and savior Jesus, who died on the cross, went to Hell for my sake and rose back as my Witness and Advocate in Heaven, Declaring me as righteous.
I'm not trying to argue or be a smart Alec in saying this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jesus didn't go to hell for three days. He said to the believing malefactor that this day he would be WITH JESUS in paradise.
+DesertEagle117 he endured Gods wrath for us so a common theory is he went to hell. Even if he didn't go to the physical hell, he experienced three days of torment of gods wrath
Ok but where does it say that? Yes he suffered Gods wrath in the cross, but the bible says nowhere that God sent him to hell or punished him in heaven.
+DesertEagle117 it's left unto interpretation. Jesus was dead for three days. He died a sinners death. It's an assumption. I'm not saying it's 100% what happened but one could infer he either went to hell or was punished for 3 days before he rose and went to heaven ( the ascension)
Oh, ok. I don't see how we could debate this, it's just opinion. But I think that when Jesus said that he was going to go to paradise on the day that the sinner on the cross died with him, he meant it.
I have been singing this hymn for days. The melody and words lift my spirit putting a smile on my face and cheer into my heart!
My daughter in-law selected this as the main hymn for her wedding to my son Matt. She had just accepted Christ and her testimony was confirmed from her wisdom in choosing this hymn. It was beautifully played at the church. Thank God.
