OMG same! I think the only thing I’ve ever done right was SPF daily. I remember being like 13 and watching this 20/20 special with my mom where they had mainly women go into a booth that would take these almost like X-rays that showed how “old” their skin was due to no SPF. It scared me. I’m Hispanic but I’m very fair skinned and while I adore my mom, skincare wasn’t a huge deal and she encouraged sun tanning. Vitamins weren’t also a big deal in my house either. I started that journey when I joined the military and started running a lot and realized that I would benefit from it.
But anyways, that episode scared me and ever since then, I use no less than an SPF 40 or higher. I also incorporated a multi vitamin, collagen and biotin vitamins to my skincare about 10 years ago. I’m also almost 40 so our bodies normally lose natural vitamins and collagen. But yes, I was the queen of over exfoliating lol

I've struggled with dehydrated skin for the longest time and that led to my skin producing so much oil and with the humidity in my area, it was an oily mess. I was never really insecure because it looked like glass skin but people were always like "OMG WHY ARE YOU SOOOO OILEH" so I had to curb it. I stopped using my exfoliating toner everyday and now use it on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at night. My skin has improved so much since.

For anyone wondering abt that waxy look - it’s also common on the forehead after overexfoliation. If you use a super strong acid on your face every day, it’s common you’ll notice your forehead get SUPER shiny. Not oil shiny, the kind of shiny that looks like someone is stretching your skin. It’s typically tight, dry, and feels weird to raise your eyebrows lol. That’s a hint that you should hold back a bit 😂

When I was in my early 20s, I thought the idea of buying facial washes with some sort of “microdermabrasion” action and heading out at noon with no moisturizer and sunscreen was a good idea. I started my real skin care journey when I was 28 and started wearing sunscreen everyday, it’s still a journey since when it comes to skincare, you have to find products that works for you.

I'm always very cautious about exfoliation. Although whenever i buy a new product i always feel like i want to use it everyday, but i try to follow my mind and put aside my excitement, because i know that when it comes to exfoliating products, less is more.
Also, since i failed my diet many times and started to succeed after learning about the science behind it, i felt like skincare was not any different because both of them are primarily science-based. And i'm so thankful people like you, Dr. Dray and many other educated influencers exist. Because y'all have taught me about skincare tips which are backed by science and not fear-monger us with statements like "natural is better", etc.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that i've never experienced overexfoliation because of the education that you guys have spread on the internet, and i'm so thankful for it.

Most moisturizers are marketed to be as moisturizing at possible, but people with oily skin don’t need that. Of course it didn't help, however, I have really resilient skin and it's always been able to handle anything I throw at it. This one time last year I really overdid it though! I was peeling, purging and whatnot because of tretinoin and still decided to use the AHA + BHA Peeling Solution from The Ordinary (because I've never had a problem with that before or after) this one night, which resulted in me getting severe chemical burns all over my face. So, a minimalist anti-aging routine would be FANTASTIC. I simply don't have time to do more than 3 steps in the morning and evening (even if I wanted to). I'm on the hunt for the most effective, simplistic, and safe routine. It's the only me time I get!

Yess please make a video on burnt skincare routine (and for how long would you suggest to continue it). I don't think I'm going to a derm anytime soon since she was the one who prescribed me an AHA wash + AHA (10% glycolic acid) moisturizer AND Epiduo, to use EVERYDAY! Ended up with burns but thankfully I stopped after 4 days

After a Tetracilyne treatment, where I was using no spf or moisturizer, I kept using my cleanser morning and night as my derm recommended. I was never told that the medication would make me photosensitive, spf was just added to my prescription and I just didn't realize it was so important and honestly I should have been prescribed a moisturizer as well. One day my entire face was red and my neck as well, ever since then my forehead is always flaky, when I go out in the sun my skin get red patches that are itchy...I'm currently trying to find a good routine to repair my skin and protect it but now I deal with even more issues than I had before considering my acne is back :D But I think I'm in the right place for that :)

Okay but your thumbnail??? The image of the girl (right) on the thumbnail is suffering from TOPICAL STEROID WITHDRAWAL (TSW), not overexfoliation. Her picture was published on a TSW article: balmonds.co.uk/blogs/blog/why-language-matters-when-we-talk-about-topical-steroid-withdrawal

Thank you for speaking up on this! Exfoliation is all the craze these days but can cause so much damage! I over exfoliated my skin for the first time last week and it was a nightmare - red, splotchy, irritated cheeks for a week. Paired my routine down to gentle cleanser, gentle hydrating toner, nourishing moisturizers with ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, and of course sunscreen. At night I would top it off with aquaphor to protect and seal in the moisture.

I used to go IN with my shower gloves on my face every day and tried to literally scrub acne off my face with st. ives in the past. ouch, I know. Only in the last month or so have I reduced my products and actives and started only using my hands and microfiber towels, have I seen a dramatic change in my skin. My skin is not dry/tight, flaking, or burning anymore and my acne has improved immensely. I've been really enjoying my skincare routine now that I'm not f****** up my own skin. IT WAS ALL ME!!

I went to a dermatologist because I have really bad and inflamed acne. He gave me a Benzoylperoxid cream and said I should use it every night. I have sensitive combination skin so after four days my skin was dry and started to get flaky really bad. After one week my skin started to burn when I was washing it and even when I put my daily moisturiser on. He said it’s normal and I just have to wait till the acne is gone and continue using it every night...

Here is my story. I suffered with severe acne and went to the dermatologist got prescribed acutane. I was using an bha face wash and adapalene gel with acutane at the same time. When I finished my treatment my skin was perfect like literally perfect. After I while I noticed that my skin got irritated and started using the PLC BHA 2%. I used it every other day and my skin wasn’t improving and then I started using it everyday. My skin got so good and I had normal pimples. Then I started getting this bumps on my skin and more pimples. Now I use the PLC BHA 2% ever other day and my skin literally has no bumps and a bit less acne than before. It’s so weird but I think I was low key over exfoliating.

I did the same thing as a teenager--over exfoliate. I then broke out in the most hideous rash that looked like terminal acne. A jar of prescription cortisone cream (the strong stuff from a dermatologist) worked within hours to clear things up. Otherwise, I'm sure I'd still have that horrible blistery rash to this day.

I did the EXACTLY SAME THING in high school, but try exfoliating TWICE a day, that hard blue scrub from Clean&Clear. I thought I was getting all the impurities out, but was actually destroying my skin, which turned crusty, filled with red spots, acne, and I actually got more blackheads. And still, I thought the problem was that I WASN’T exfoliating e n o u g h. The 2010’s were a chaotic time for my skin
