    Even though I’m not a sailor and I don’t have a boat I always enjoy your videos.
    Lots of practical information on the boats sea and ports which I find interesting.
    I guess I have the same travel spirit only by land and using all means of surface travel I come across. I admire your knowledge and honesty on the places you visit.
    I used to work sometimes up the coast in Dover and on the French side. Been to Brighton a few times but never seen the port. Travelled a lot in France and envious of you able to live in Boulogne sur Mer. It must be great feeling to travel independently across the English Channel by sea and indeed further afield as you show us in your excellent videos.
    Greetings from Northern Ireland.

      Foster hello,
      So pleased you like the videos... Yes boats are a wonderful way to travel and I enjoy the arriving at a new to me place in the boat as much as the sailing bit getting there. I do enjoy far away places with strange sounding names and messing about in boats so I'm lucky to have found a hobby that embraces both!!! You have a wonderful shoreline in Northern Island - there must be yacht clubs that would take you for a sail boat ride...

    Very interesting. I’ve sailed from Brighton. I remember going down to help a friend sail from there, but it was a while back and so while I recognise details, so much is lost from my memory. I have also sailed into Eastbourne. We’d sailing non-stop from Ipswich, but fuel was getting low, the tide was against us, and having left in the early hours of Sat, it was now a sun evening, only 2 of us. We clearly came in at high water … I remember the lock opening up after the entrance causing problems in our approach. The effect of sleep deprivation. I do remember getting to the station to return home though. Maybe I got a bus? Again, forgotten details 😥 Love the straightforward honest presentation over the usual hyped style. Very nice, so thank you 🙂

    Nicely done, and for once, port visits that are very useful. Many thanks. I was surprised during my visit to Brighton by the very strong tidal current either pressing you against, or off the visitor pontoon. I watched several boats struggling with arrival, and others struggling to unpin from the pontoon for departure. I thought it was perhaps some exceptional circumstances, but then saw a RUclips video of someone else who also struggled with his arrival in strong current 90° to the pontoon.

      Glad it was helpful Patrick. Yes being artificially out into the sea - like Dover does seem to create all sorts of issues with tides and currents.. Brighton seems to major in them but theyb are doing major dredging which may help

    I had an excellent day's sail back in June from Boulogne Sur Mer to Eastbourne bringing home a Co26. All straightforward with some essential homework and a bit of help from your previous video on sailing back in a pandemic. Boulogne was a really special place to visit and I spent 3 nights crammed in the corner there and exploring the old town. I had to adjust my channel crossing plan because Dover Marina was shut which meant a longer passage but a good way to cross the channel - I wonder if Dover is still closed? After Eastbourne I had a bit of a mission to Littlehampton but made it in time for fish and chips. Looking forward to more videos of yours Michael, which are always informative and entertaining.

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  2 года назад

      Yes Johnny there is a pretty impressive tidal flow in that part of the channel but it sounds like you handled it well...
      I actually live in the old town and love the place..

    I agree with you emphatically about the standard of facilities at Beaulieu!
    Brighton is now looking VERY dated (I had a boat there in the late 80's, long before Sovereign Harbour popped up at Eastbourne)
    The coastline between the two locations - particularly East of Newhaven - is truly spectacular and worth a visit just to see the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head lighthouse. In fair winds, going close inshore at Cuckmere Haven is a magical experience.
    Many thanks for another brilliant video.
    NB you mentioned Eastbourne being the first port of call after Dover; Folkestone is an option if your boat can take the ground, but its so close to Dover why would you bother? On the other hand, Rye is an absolutely stunning town to visit on foot, but only a madman would approach it from the sea; (I once was that madman, and it wasn't a pleasant experience).

    Great timing Michael and another fascinating & informative travelogue. I'm just about to help! my skipper Bro deliver a nice Dufour 33 from Ipswich to Torquay this weekend, 5 or 6 days I'm guessing harbour hopping. i'll replay your vid again tonight and try and do some able crew swotting up :)

      @@SailingGently Thanks Michael, quite a trip, 5 days mostly motor sailing bashing a constant s/westerly, no Autohelm!!. Met some lovely people along the way, Ramsgate, Sovereign/ Eastbourne, Southsea on the hook, Weymouth plus a much needed lunchtime chillax along the way into Folkestone outer harbour last Sunday to hear the Folkestone Music Festival on the quay and see the amazing Red Arrows display....was that just for us :) Finally got into Torquay early at around 5.30 on Wed and got to enjoy the best few hours sailing we’d had all week, engine off, sunshine, 6.5 knots, slightly overpowered :) sublime.
      We were back in Southampton by 11.30 pm:(

    I have watched all your video's, and the story seems to be that you are going to relocate your boat to the Caribbean. I would enjoy watching this adventure, whether you have it transported, or sail across the Atlantic. I realise that you have a different sailing channel to other RUclipsrs, but think that any sailing footage of this trip would be appreciated.

      That's the plan Chris... I'm doing it as a sort diary... Recorded the first 'element' to day and started an edit program for it... Will do a bit more shortly the.... How strange we should have the same idea... Plan to get as much live footage of the event as possible of course. encourager les autres

  • @WidleyWesident
    @WidleyWesident 2 года назад

    BYC inflated prices? Same as Chichester Yacht Club that charges visiting yachtsmen more for both drinks and meals. It’s nice to visit other clubs, even nicer to welcome others to my club, but it always seems a bit rough to be discriminated against. ☹️

    • @SailingGently

    Brighton marina is a horrible concrete eyesore that I've land visited over a number of years only to witness it's further deterioration.
    My feeling on looking at past yachts for sale, is to rule out ever buying one from there.

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  2 года назад

      I think the brokers Ancasta Marine are pretty good and reliable but it is more a 'shopping, eatery centre than marina... But the new heads/showers are brilliant
