    Hi Greg, thanks for this video, I was one of those that reached out to Matt about the specs on the burr, I might add that pointing out that 7/16 socket is a good tool to back the race of the bearing While gently persuading the burr into place🤣. On the subject of shaft size I have several burrs that the shaft is exactly.250 and would not slide into the bearing, I clamped the burr in my Vice ( and it is my only vice😇) with wood on both sides of the sphere as to not damage the carbide, as you know carbide is very brittle. I used emery cloth to polish the shank of the burr in order to get it to slide into the bearing after chilling the bur in the deep freeze over night.
    I would like to think that anyone that has a need for this tool would know enough to back up the bearing when installing the burr it if it is snug fit.
    As for the extension I was looking for another 12 inch one and I found several that had a hex bore instead of a round female bore. I am not sure if the hex bore would hold the round shaft of the burr securely. Perhaps some can comment on their experience!
    Thanks for the video! Greg, 😁🛫

    • @GregsGarage

      I don't have cad drawings for the spacers. Both Matt and I went old school and did our jackets by just using measurements and then transferring hole locations by marking through the tool.

  • @jsteifel

    you can also stick the burr in the freezer and it should slip in easily after a 3 hours of freezing.

    • @GregsGarage
      @GregsGarage  3 года назад

      I know that works with steel tools, but I'm not sure carbide shrinks when cold... My only reference is the shrink fit tool holders on milling machines. They require carbide tools because the carbide doesn't expand when heated, thus allowing them to be removed and replaced... Might be worth an experiment here in the garage!!!

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 3 года назад +1

      @@GregsGarage Carbide will shrink, but a lot less than steel. Get a block of dry ice and wrap the burr in it for a hour or so, then it will drop in with ease. Just wear leather gloves when handling the burr when frozen, as it will give you frostbite burns if touched with bare hands. I used to keep a pair of cotton gloves as interface for the leather, so that the cotton absorbed sweat, and thus the leather did not get damp and freeze. That though was working with LOX, which is a lot colder, though if you have liquid nitrogen the burr will shrink even more, but you run the risk of a shaft that is really oversize shattering the bearing inner race as it warms up.

    Nice work. I'm wondering about the effects of the 3/8" bore of the Irwin mating with the 1/4" carbide burr shank with those Irwin set screws being on one 'face'. Any centering issue there? Thanks.

    • @GregsGarage
      @GregsGarage  3 года назад

      The bore on the Irwin extension is 1/4" hex. There's very little slop in it when you put a round shaft into it. There are probably a few thousandths of clearance, but it's not something you feel when you are using the tool.

      Go to www.gregsgaragekc.com There is a sign up for to be on the notification list for the next batch. We are in the middle of machining and we are planning to ship around mid-May. As for the round tube... There are folks who claim you can do it. I have not even tried because we've been so busy trying to keep up with demand on this and several other tools. I would think if you took a piece of dowel, the size of the ID and routed for the 3/4" tool, you could stick the dowel into the tube, then pull the Seams Impossible tool through the route and it would all stay true.
