It's interesting that Stuart's behavior changed later on in the series. At first he was relatively confident. As time when by he became more conservative, more timid.

God, I hate Leonard - he was such a wimp in his relationship with Penny, and without any backbone or character, it was pathetic! He actually had some character in the first three seasons, but with Penny, he always lacked self-respect, and later he became absolutely the worst character on the show because he never stood up to anyone: Penny, Sheldon, his mother, or Howard, or Raj, so he never did anything to improve his situation/insecurities yet he always whined! Everybody says Raj was the worst etc but Raj's only problem was women while he had self-respect as a scientist and in general, and actually stood up to Sheldon regularly (the desk prank is just one example). Raj had very good development work-wise when first he discovered the new planet in season 2 I believe, and then also worked in the planetarium, he was great friends with Penny and was pretty cute and funny for most of the show.
The writers ruined Raj only later, in the last four seasons when they started writing repetitively about how awful Raj is with women, and it was completely unnecessary because the cute, shy astrophysicist who finally broke the 'curse' and learned to talk to women normally, could have got any girl he wanted! The writers made him a loser on purpose and it was stupid. But at least for the first seven seasons of the show he was good.
The problem with Leonard is, that after just three seasons, he changed into an utter whiner and a wimp in his relationships, on his job, etc! Leonard was the worst character because he got zero development, and he only got worse.
Howard matured and started a family, and Sheldon absolutely changed too: he started a romantic relationship which he swore he wouldn't in season 1, he opened up to people and started to understand emotions way better, so colossal change here, then he got married and won a Nobel - so he was a dramatically different character at the end, compared to his original version! People who whine that Sheldon didn't change simply don't get the comedy element in sitcoms is never to be taken seriously, it's just the more superficial part of the show but there is also a drama part, so you have two layers of the show here, and Sheldon absolutely changed if we consider this second layer outside of the comedy.
Raj finally stood alone on his two feet without his parents helping him and again - as I wrote, he was a good character during seven seasons, he got way worse only in season 8. Penny matured emotionally and in general too, and changed her career for the better, she was the heart and soul of the show, and she had great relationships and storylines with everyone except Leonard, the only thing she was bad at, was being a romantic partner for Leonard, it's clear that this became the worst part of the show: Penny and Leonard relationship.
It naturally ruined Leonard because this relationship became Leonard's whole identity, and this is bad writing. Notice, that Leonard was the only one that didn't have any real development as far as his job is concerned. Howard went to space, Raj won and discovered a few things during the show's run, and also started to work at the planetarium later, Penny changed her career completely and became successful, Bernadette got promoted and earned even better money while being a mom twice at the same time, Amy won a scientific grant at Princeton as a visiting researcher for the summer and went there, plus she won Nobel with Sheldon, Sheldon's struggles in his research were regularly shown in a few seasons and in the end, he won the Nobel, so only Leonard didn't really have any development in this field! Even Stuart got a new, better comic book shop, and we watched him as he struggled and then expanded his shop, and had a great girlfriend in Louise. So even Stuart was better at the end, than Leonard, lol.
Yes, there was this military project thing, but this storyline didn't go anywhere (shame), and they worked on this as a group, so it doesn't count. The writers wrote Leonard in such a poor way later on, that the only purpose of his existence became Penny and his relationship with her, and this completely ruined his character. So that is why, for me, he was def the worst, especially if we analyze it in depth.

It is because of this show that I visited my first comic book store. I was thinking I'd walk out of there with two or five quirky friends, but nothing happened, and I never went back.

I was looking for this video. Its crazy how in the earlier seasons, Stewart had confidence and charm. And later on he was portrayed as a creepy sickly recluse weirdo who had absolutely no charm or appeal until he met Denise.
