    Also, typically you will see a dollar sign ($) at the prompt when you are in a normal user shell without privileges and hashtag (#) when you can execute commands with privileges, as shown here when su is successfully run.

    whoami also works on Windows. Reportedly su will also work in a recent Win11 update too.

    The su command is rather of switching users. Executing su without any arguments calls onto root, but if you pass on another user (we have kali1 running and we call for kali2), then we will try to connect to the kali2 user.

    You can also use the command `logname`, this shows the name of the logged in user in case you switched to another user from your current session.

    su allows you to 'switch user' and your excluding - for environment variables. You can su to any user, but su - is traditional and sudo su - or most common as root is disabled is distros, such as Ubuntu.

      Nope its there😂😂😂 each distro has their own way of doing these these days it used to be that you did su apt-get "command" but since 2008 Ubuntu changed it done sudo apt "command" or sudo, su is still there.

      I just checked and was able to use sudo su on two versions of Ubuntu, 22.04 and
      23.04, and they both worked fine. Not sure what you mean that it's disabled.

    I have moved from windows to Linux over the past 4 years and I have a nice Dell workstation with Window 11 Pro. Hasn't been touched once in over a year. Linux has done every i need and more.

    Wanted to use crt in some video edits but didn’t know anything about Linux or terminal. Grabbed iSH and a-Shell on iOS and apparently the former runs an emulation of Alpine Linux. After familiarizing myself with that was able to jump right on mac terminal or use open-ssh from phone/iPad. Ur vids helped a bunch so thanks.

    su actually just allows you to switch to other users.. Unix is a multi user system - this is the fundamental difference between Unix and early versions of DOS, windows or even what Apple was delivering with their early hardware.

      The early Apple OS didn't even have a command line. You are correct that su is used to switch users but if no user is specified, it defaults to root.

      I was mainly talking about the Classic Mac OS with a GUI, it has no command line. Still that Apple DOS was not a true DOS it was a control program.@@thegingerpowerranger

      @@dieselsoggydog6299 try again! The original apples ran a very simple CLI operating system that was stored in read only memory. Apple DOS came along later, DOS stands for Disk Operating System - it was an expanded amount of functionality as the external medium offered a significantly increased amount of storage over the internal ROM.

    kali linux is based on ubuntu linux, so it would be the same on both operating systems.

      just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as
      Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it,
      GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather
      another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by
      the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components
      comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

    su command provide the ability to "switch user" now there can be more than 1 users so in that case you will have to specify the name of user that you want to log in as ans the password too.
    In this video there is no other user than it's root privileges so it automatically showed only option for root.
    Don't try only su command where machine has more than 1 user.
    You shall always specify the name of user that you want to login as.

      There the root user is locked, so root doesn't have a password. Which is a security feature.
      Instead use the sudo(8) command as prefix to command you want to escalate priviliges to root.
      whoami
      sudo whoami
      whoami

    That's why I was scared to use Linux... People like showing terminal and those commands acting like that how we use Linux... Until I tried Ubuntu and Mint I realise that for basic use there is no need for terminal

      Always check facts, and it is easy. Just use the man(1) command on the su(8) command.
      Just type
      man su
      Yes, the man(1) command also have a man page.

    Don’t ever su unless it is necessary just use sudo for temporary privilege escalation. Which is way less worse than typing a damn windows admin password at every prompt.

    This works on Windows too (in cmd or powershell). Whoami shows the username and also the domain if you use one. Su does not work...
