Larnell is one of my most recent heroes :) His work on Snarky Puppy's "I Like It Here" is beyond awesome, in a band that IS already beyond awesome.
Plus he's so nice and humble. Unbelievable.

Exactly. He seems so down to earth. Apparently he joined Snarky Puppy and learned all the songs on the flight to go record with them. He’s pure talent!

One of many things I love about this video is how Larnell starts out super focused and intense, and once he settles in, maybe around the second chorus or so, it’s off to the races. I’m sure he was human for a few brief moments and forgot those shots later in the song, but I really love that he smiles, shrugs it off and just does what he does. Total professional and such a great example of how dedicating and sacrificing for years to learn and know your craft allows you to step into any scenario and crush it - and look darn cool doing it. I’m sure you’ve seen it by now, but the full jazz fusion video that you enjoyed a clip of is mind-blowing.
Some people play drums; some people are drummers - Larnell Lewis is a musician (and probably an alien, too).

Yes, David, I totally enjoyed the show! I didn't know when I requested this if this was going to be too long of a video for you to want to react to but I was hoping that for someone like you of your background it was well worth watching. I'm so happy to see that you did enjoy watching it! I also loved watching you break down Lars' original drum work while Larnell was trying to figure it out and it was so great to see that you appreciated Larnell's personal touches. I wonder if Larnell did those personal touches because he wanted to do them or it they were subconscious decisions of his trying to fill the gaps of the parts he didn't remember. It was great that you not only highlighted them but when on to believe they were better than Lars' original drum work and you explain why you thought that. I had a great time watching this, man!
By the way, about that youtube channel Drumeo: That's not Larnell's youtube channel. That channel was started by another Canadian professional drummer, Jared Falk. Drumeo is an educational company that offers online drumming tutorials with many different instructors. They have managed to get some of the top names in the drumming world to do tutorials and masterclasses on their site. Their youtube channel has interviews, sessions and some tutorials and masterclasses with top drummers. They also have some great videos like this where they take some of those top drummers and give them a challenge.
You said in the middle of the video of the video that you were going to watch the other Larnell Lewis video that was referenced in the video on your own and to not request it. Did you watch that other Larnell Lewis video since then? If not, I want to request it at some point. I would also like to request some of the other videos that Drumeo has done with other top drummer for you to react to later on. Let me know if you would like that, David! Thanks again for the great video! Loved your reaction!

It's interesting to listen to Larnell speak when he's listening! The language of drumming is a bit alien, though. I saw an interview with Neil Peart where he was talking about drumming. I tried, I really did, to keep up, but it was Greek to me. But I do remember the idea of "frameworks", which, as patterns of patterns, makes some sense to me. I still try to make sense of drumming...ha! When will I learn!

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  2 года назад +1

Framework is a big deal, especially in studio sessions where we sit down, we get the charts, we get like 5 minutes to read over them, and then we're recording. Musicians who understand what framework is, and how to recognize and utilize it will always have a leg up on those who don't in the world of session work.

Well, damn, great stuff. I’m a big fan of drums and drummers. They might be my favorite instrument. I’ve even downloaded drums-only versions of songs, just the drum tracks alone. From way back in my peer-to-peer file sharing days- no, not proud of it, but was all I had at the time. But, depending on the producer or production, those isolated drum tracks can sound awesome. If they got a good drum sound in the studio. Otherwise, yeah, the way he ended his performance was just sick, a completely killer finish. And, I totally agree with his closing statements, too. My angle is if I like a song, then I listen to it. Simply. I don’t wanna get hung up on genre or style or cool/uncool. Whatever. Jam the tune. To that end my taste has been called very eclectic. It’s just how I am. Most people seem so rigidly stuck in only one lane, in my experience. But maybe that can slowly begin to change with the use of online platforms. I sure hope so. Great passion, by the way, totally dig it. And, when I saw the screenshot. That’s pretty much how I look when we hit a home run. With a sustained high note.

I think the parts Larnell did differently were the most interesting, even the extra kicks coming out of the second verse. And of course there's the ending. That makes you You. Sina drums is a good example. She prefers rock. But playes and has studied many genres. She won't to (Finland?) To take classes in jazz drumming.
Now if you see her now. She holds the drum stick in her left hand differently. ( the way they tought when I was in band) would love your option on Sina (Zena) drums. 14yo on first video. Covers, originals and RUclips artist collaborations.

Jump on that trend fast, Mr. Heretic! Dragonforce may have you on that! During Covid lockdown, Herman and Sam started a series called “Dragonforce writes a song in 10 minutes”. So far they’ve done Nightwish, Rammstein, Sabaton, Amaranthe, and FFDP. With Nightwish, some unknown band in the UK covered their song and made a full video on it, which Herman and Sam reacted to that, then the band reacted to Herman and Sam reacting to the band covering that nightwish song! Search for “Nightwish Plastic tree” and have fun with that. The song titles are hilarious as well: Plastic tree. Cyber Sausage World. Angry Guy (the bro riff).. you can tell they were bored! But Plastic Tree is what you want to find.

“Enter Sandman” is one of those gateway songs that even non fans know that a lot of fans are so familiar with, they’re sick of it. Lol
I’m one of them. I’ve never been particularly fond of it. I wouldn’t classify it as a metal song, more hard rock. It’s always reminded me of a glam rock song that the Crüe or Bon Jovi would write. That’s not necessarily a knock, because I love Mötley Crüe, but this just doesn’t sound like Metallica. After Justice and puppets, this album was just ok.

The reason I ask is that you've always seemed like the type that wants to get into the game and not sit on the sidelines. Perhaps RUclips has taken that time away that you would be using to create awesome music. Only you yourself sir can answer that question. God knows RUclips probably pays better because live acts at your local hot spots only get paid enough to perhaps pay their cell bill.. LOL.. Great reaction my friend..

My musical journey is mainly obscure metal (though the bands I like seem to becoming more well known all the time) and classical music, with a heavy helping of 70s and 80s rock. I would love to dig into fusion and jazz but every time I try to the recommendations are more of what's popular for jazz enthusiasts and I get put off. I know for a fact I'm missing out

The trick is to find that 1 gap band that can bridge the gap between Jazz and what you like to listen to normally. If you're into hip hop, I would start with some soul bands like Tower Of Power and then work your way into maybe something like Spyro Gyra. If you're into rock and metal, I would recommend either The Rippingtons or certain albums from Chick Corea Elektrik Band and Steps Ahead.

And the sad part about them, is that they work, and keep working. There was a 5 minute interview Pharrell Williams did with Dave Grohl, with Dave saying that he (Dave) is a horrible drummer, but what he did do, especially on Nevermind, was that he stole the DISCO flam fill from Nile Rodgers, Tony Todd, and the Gap Band, and put them into Nevermind. Each one of those fills came from disco. Those were the same flam fills that Lars used here, and that was all due to Bob Rock, saying that simple = better, because those heavy fills sound like a chasm in arenas, so use fills that sound good in arenas.
