I saw this movie in a theater the year it came out. Everybody in the packed movie house laughed regardless of their race, creed or ethnicity. Nobody was offended.
Nobody booed or walked out. Also, nobody in the media was offended either.

One of the great things about Blazing Saddles is when they were making it, the studio executives would look at the dailies, and tell Mel Brooks what he had to cut. Mel would say, "yes sir! That's gone!" Then he'd completely ignore what they had to say, and made that movie the way he wanted to make it. Why? Because he knew it was going to be a great movie.

I am a 55 year old black man and Blazing Saddles is still one of my all time favorite movies. I watch it every chance I get. Everyone in that movie performed brilliantly. This was comedy genius.

Best thing about that movie is that the MPA told Mel to cut out a bunch of scenes that were just way too offensive. True to form, Mr. Brooks said ok, then released it the next day without any changes. The rest is history, still being made.
Or when Cleavon and Gene Wilder are talking after the old lady told Cleavon "up yours" and Gene is talking about how these are just simple people... "you know... morons." Gene added the word "morons" himself and they left it in there because it was hilarious and Cleavon's reaction was genuine. Or at the end when they're running out of Warner Bros and there's that random dude standing there? They couldn't get him to leave and Mel thought it was funny so they left it. Gosh this is such a great movie!

And for the TV version they had to cut out the fart noises during scene where the cowboys where eating beans! THAT was more offensive than anything else! 🤣🤣🤣

Nope - maybe he had good intentions but that didn't work. Accusations of racism are even worse now and the idea is embedded in the heads of thousands and thousands of young people who will be running the country soon and voting for who will run the country. It's a quaint old movie but what is happening NOW is the problem. This is a bit of a distraction from the real problem which is NOT a light-hearted romp. Sad but true.

Well, Harvey Corman...he even promoted himself in-film, played his villainy perfectly and hilariously, and still didn't get a supporting nod. Maybe HE should've received a nomination. Madeline Kahn probably deserved hers.
But Cleavon Little? Ehhh. Rough year to get nominated for 'best actor' in a movie like this. Lots of great films and big names that year. Granted, "Murder on the Orient Express" was nominated too much. Of anyone overlooked, it would have to be Gene Hackman in "The Conversation." (But The Academy already learned its lesson with nominating HIM.)

This movie is absolute perfection. It takes all the offenses out there and 100% exploits them to be the funniest thing possible.
Why is it funny? Because the focus is on comedy, racism is just a byproduct that they call out from start to finish!
Funny thing is, "Gabby Johnson" was played by Jack Starrett who also played "Deputy Art Galt" in "First Blood (1982)", the a-hole deputy that fell out of the helicopter. Jack was a very talented actor. RIP to all those great actors.

The thing about Bart was that he was a confident guy that never accepted victimhood as a mentality. He faced more adversity than could be dreamt up by the likes of Jussie Smollett and not once complained. He went about his business, did great things, and proved everyone wrong without so much as a frown on his face.

30 years ago, when my dad was still alive, he told me that they couldn't make 'Blazing Saddles' way back then. There is no way it could be made today. Same with 'History of the World part 1'.

Blazing saddles one of the best Mel Brooks movies
I loved this movie when I was a kid. The Sherrif was a hero and all the other people we're racist against him were painted in a bad light. In the end they all love him, great comedy.
Don't forget that they needed a lot of work done in a short amount of time and a certain group saved the day.
I watched an interview with Mel Brooks that happened 10+ years ago, and was asked if this movie could be made and he answered instantly without hesitation said “No way”

My boss and I have rewatched scenes from this movie several times closing up our store. Hilarious. Sad that we have to turn it off when a customer comes in instead of sharing in the moment with them, out of fear they will be offended. Blazing saddles is one of the most uniting, important movies in film history. Thank you for sharing it guys
I was a pup when Blazing Saddles hit the drive-in screen and Dad and Mom loaded the station wagon and took us all to see it. We'd been to the drive-in many times before. This was the only drive-in movie that I could actually hear other people in adjacent cars laughing out loud. People were stumbling and laughing carrying their popcorn and drinks from the concession stands back to their cars. It's a great memory and I know I will never see anything like that again

Every black friend I’ve ever had considers ‘Blazing Saddles’ one of the best movies ever. I watched it with my best friend’s family and they were all cracking up.
Can you imagine Joy Reid’s reaction to this movie being remade today? No straightjacket would be strong enough to hold that nut-job.

I love being old enough to have seen Blazing Saddles at the drive in with my parents. I have probably seen this movie over a 100 times in my 56 years and it still makes me laugh as much as it ever did and I can practically recite the whole thing (like all Mel Brooks movies). In fact - I am going to watch this again later.

Blazing saddles one of the few movies I can still sit and watch and laugh at after having watched it so many times that's a sure sign of comedy gold or senility.
I actually saw this movie in a theatre in Los Angeles when I was 10 years old.
The theatre was probably half filled with black people and I've never heard as much laughter for a film in my life.
The town was inbred too. Everyone in the towns last name was Johnson. People probably wouldn’t even get that joke now.

Love, love, love this movie! Cleavon Little was brilliant in his role that Pryor was slated to play. It worked out well all the way around. Cleavon proved to be more than just a replacement. That whole movie is nonstop funny, pointing out the foibles and baser aspects of humanity. Brooks shone a light at a very important time and it would do us all well if we were to revisit (or for many, for the first time)the movie & watch it in its entirety with the original soundtrack kept in place. It should be mandatory.
Bought a copy just so my kids wouldn't miss out.

As someone who was a teenager when this movie was released I can honestly say that the campfire scene with Slim Pickens was the scene that most people found funny.
Also, back in those days Bill Cosby was the most popular mainstream black comedian of the time because he presented a family friendly image. Richard Pryor even mentioned in one of his standup comedy shows on HBO how Bill Cosby was influential among the black comedians of the time

It was a different time when we were using comedy to point out the absurdity of racism. There were shows like All in the Family that poked fun at racism. To show just how stupid it sounded coming out of someone's mouth. There were many times where everybody went silent and we were all looking around the living room at each other asking did he just say that on TV? The best way to point out something that is wrong is to make fun of it. And Blazing Saddles made fun of every racist stereotype and shocked people enough to realize how absurd they were acting by being racist.
He slaughtered all the sacred cows with his comedy.

Somewhat similar topic to the later discussion, rewatching Family Matters as an adult the other day made me realize how hard they worked on making a warm show that reflects the simple pleasures of life. The Winslow's we're black, even though they did not need be, but since they were black it gave the impression that values were shared; a message that seemed all the more fun because it was not forced or seemingly political, for that Matter.
Great movie!! And no, we couldn’t make this movie today…. Nor Sanford and Sons or All in the Family…. both great shows! Was a time we could laugh at a show that pointed out the idiocy of racism but not now. Amazing the great strides we’ve made as an intelligent, understanding and accepting society!

Django was funny as fuck different style of comedy but same concept they focused on the racism and the inequity at the time and made it very humorous I get that it was more of an action movie but I found most of the scenes pretty funny when it came down Retribution aspect it was good shit and over the top
Richard Pryor was the Best Comedian every. grew-up listening to his skits. The story of Little Feets and the Voodoo lady Mrs.Rudolph was so funny. his cassette tapes were great.

Blazing Saddles is one of my all time favorite movies. Me and my dad went to go watch a screening of it at a small local theater a few years ago. Before the movie started the manager came out on stage and asked the small audience who had never seen Blazing Saddles and there was a small group who never had. The manager told them "There was a time before Blazing Saddles and a time after it." Me and my dad laughed our asses off and the people who had never seen it looked mortified.
I was just a kid when this came out and my dad took the family to see it. I remember him laughing non-stop but I simply didn't get it yet. I only remembered the fart scene.

I also wonder of the move Silver Streak could be made today. In this movie, Richard Pryor’s character paints Gene Wilder’s character in black face. He did it to help Gene’s character sneak back on the train avoiding law enforcement.
Still one of my favorite movies! I'm not sure how many times I've watched it, but I can tell you that nobody likes to watch it with me, because I know all the lines and say them along with the characters. In fact, I love to just randomly quote lines from the movie in daily life. Little things, like, "Somebody's gotta go back and get a shitload of dimes!"

I was watching some Benny Hill episodes on RUclips recently and realized that they are funnier than anything I have seen on TV or in Cinema in the last 20 years. And the strange thing is, at the time Benny Hill was first aired, nobody complained. It was not everyone's cup of tea, and if they didn't like it, they didn't watch it. Oh, and Blazing Saddles is possibly the most hilarious film ever made! I even own a copy and watch it when I need a good laugh.
Cleavon Little was a great comedian and actor. He played the part of the sheriff perfectly.
Gene Wilder and Cleavon made a good team in the movie too. Always a step ahead of the bad guys. Non-stop laughter 🤣 throughout the whole movie.
