By the sounds of it you must usually paint with gouache because it's quite normal for paint colours to vary in opacity. I'm not a fan of shiny paint either but I use acrylic gouache. So many bad memories of smudging, smeary poster paints from school. I always use acrylic now because it dries waterproof and tough!

I think that we are both the total opposite of what we expect and like from paints.
I once gave up acrylic painting because my paint was too matt for me and I didn't like it.
In the art shop where I bought them, the acrylic paints on the labels didn't say whether they were glossy or matt.
I had the Lukas studio acrylic paints. I later bought a few colours from the Amsterdam to try again, I haven't got around to it yet.

Ahw that's funny ! That's right that everyone has their own taste regarding art supplies, especially for paint :D It's the Lukas acrylics that were matt ? I think I could love acrylics if they're matt !

@@lyamgtt exactly they were that are too matt for me,
I can remember that they are not 100% matt, but have a very minimal shine that was too plastic like for me.
Exactly for every taste, there are paints that have these characteristics that are liked. 😉
I think that the indication of some acrylic paints of the gloss level is not quite right from some manufacturers in online shops and catalogues.
Maybe matte acrylic paint by Liquitex is something for you, which is sold under acrylic gouache or actual acrylic gouache by e.g., Turner and Holbein.
But which is more of its own as I heard a video of jerries Artarama.
      This video: ruclips.net/video/A94V5ag8ULw/видео.html
As far as I know, there are also matt and ultramatt varnishes for acrylic paints, then the painting is definitely matt.

Normally you treat a painting with varnish afterwards. This is to protect the colors from UV light. You can get varnish as matt or gloss - for instance from Liquitex. The gloss varnish makes the painting look more like oil paint and give you the result you want.

Maybe individual Acrylic paints are better for you.
Many colours say how opaque they are in the case of the Amsterdam, the empty squares marked with small squares indicate that the colour is transparent,
if it is only half-filled then the colour is semi-opaque, if the square is filled with black then the colour is opaque.
The fact that the colours are not consistent in terms of opacity has nothing to do with poorer quality,
but what grain size the pigments have, the smaller, the more transparent they are.
Acrylic paints and other paints other than gouache that are of high quality also have different pigments with different grain sizes.
Gouache is intended as an opaque painting medium, and that is why some white pigment is always mixed into cheap gouache colours to create opaque colours.
For high-quality gouache colours, some white is only added to colours where the grain size is too small, otherwise not, and it will resort to somewhat coarser pigments.
    Another short tip,
unfortunately, acrylic paints also constantly give off unhealthy chemicals such as fungicides and stabilizers,
so that the paints don't mould and separate into their component parts, and unfortunately many of them can't be smelled either.
So always paint with it at the open window or outside.😉

Thank you for your message ! For me it wasn't a question of quality because the colors are really beautiful, but it was more linked to the fact that I wasn't expected that much opacity variety in a same set, but I guess it's because it's acrylics :) Thanks also for the remark about the unhealthy chemicals, I'm really careful about that !

For what you are doing, you would be better off using gouache paint. Gouache is designed to be opaque.

Just wondering how long it takes for them to dry? I have extremely cheap acrylic paints and they dry after just a few minutes on my palette and it annoys me :(

They dry pretty quickly as well ! It exists some medium that you can mix with acrylic paint to slow down the drying :)

    • @lyamgtt
      @lyamgtt  2 года назад
