Hi Austin, I’ve been playing MIJ/CIJ Fender guitars since the early 1980’s. They were definitely secret weapon instruments. Most from this era do have some flame figuring in the maple neck. I consider them to be superior in almost every way to their US counterparts (aside from the frets)
I got my first Tele to give my shoulder a break mid-set from my non-weight relieved Les Paul Studio. I've always loved the way Teles articulate notes - it's like you can't make them muddy.
I have an original international series telecaster from back in the day, and it is a great sounding tele. They had 1meg pots which can get a bit ice picky but the volume and tone on them work so closely together the range of sounds you get is fantastic. It’s one, if not the best tele I have.
I’d say the LP special since those usually have P-90s, I guess the Junior is like the Esquire. Funny enough Fender ragged on Gibson over the Firebird for “stealing” the Jazzmaster shape for the Firebird. 😂
@@joermnyc Yeah, people either love or hate the offset body shape, I will say this, both the Jazzmaster and the Firebird are very long and somewhat unwieldy to handle! (IMHO). They both play just fine, it’s just that they are long guitars with a normal scale length.
I have a ‘92 Maui blue strat and it was my first guitar. It’s since been upgraded with a star ground and a tortoise shell pickguard, and other upgrades. It’s super quiet with no buzz.
I own one of these in Sienna Burst, really like it although I'm not a fan of the vintage style bridges (easily replaced), the neck pickup is also a bit lackluster compared to the bridge, which is again easily fixed. The only other slight issue is having the truss rod at the heel is a bit inconvenient. The Hybrid II is probably the better choice if you're not concerned about the colour (main reason I bought my international color model). With the body carve, 22 frets, truss rod at the headstock and the body is routed for other combinations under the pick guard the Hybrid II seems like unbeatable value at the moment.
I THOUGHT I heard evidence of the need for a setup! Thanks for confirming that the Tele needed one. And you're right; Fender Japan shouldn't be castigated for setup drifting after a Transpacific trip. As for the flame-y neck wood, I think every electric guitarist should have at least one sooner or later. I have one that caps off a truly beautiful instrument! I hope more people get one -- if they want one, that is.
Maui blue is nice. Still prefer the pastel colours that evoke the late 50s/early 60s. Daphne blue is my favourite Fender blue, closely followed by Sonic blue. My tele is in sienna burst. It's the most beautiful burst known to man. I aim to pick up a daphne blue strat at some point.
That Telecaster is one i would definitely want to buy. I love the finish and the guitar sounds great. I would prefer a six saddle bridge but other than that it seems really nice.
Had me at U shaped neck. I have had Gibson, Epiphone, Ibanez, ESP, HB etc etc etc. Favorite neck was a thin U shaped satin finished BEEEEE-YUUUUT. Just love em.
Every time I see you review Japanese models, I am reminded of the Sago Guitars 虎徹 - Kotetsu - ( Wagakki Band Machiya Signature Model), which I once suggested, sadly, I've given up hope that it will ever come out on the channel, too bad, for which is a really very interesting instrument, greetings. (I also tell you that it has even doubled its value since then)
Glad too see them. Back at Fender now . can't wait to get one .thanks 👍 Trogly for that review.been wondering how these Japan made teles sounds like..it was either these models or the Vintera ones. For my firts official Guitar 🎸.
Not bad for a Tele.... I am by no means a Telecaster fan but this thing looked pretty good and sounded good as well. Looks like a quality instrument. Nice playing too Trogly!
I found a Sqire affinity with a completely flamed neck, with the thickest and darkest rosewood board and stripe that ive ever seen. That guitar is a HOT ROD now man!
Hey Austin, great vid as always. Cheers for that! Although I'm not too drawn to the solid blue. But hey, they can't all be zingers. (; You know what topic I'd find interesting if you find the time and inspiration to do a video on? A rundown of Gibson cases through the years. What's out there? When were the different models made? What's you're take on 'em? What does the market say? Stuff like that. Would definitely be an interesting watch for me. Take care, dude!
Was just in Japan and bought a MIJ Hybrid II Telecaster in twilight, that is a 2024 exclusive to the Tokyo Flagship store. Pretty great little guitar. Was surprised how many spec differences there are between mine and the guitar reviewed here.
I guess it's reasonable needing a setup. Although I bought an Ibanez bass recently that was perfect right out of the box. Did not have to adjust anything. Came from Indonesia.
The trussrod at the heel with walnut cap at the nut on a rosewood neck is also a CBS-era spec that's different from earlier and later models.I've always thought it looked cool.
Loving the Maui Blue! And those pick-ups sound more than worthy! Could I afford it, I'd take that off yer hand right now, mate! 😆 The neck is a plus...I'm just missing my PreBS Tele.
F-MIJ quality control is usually excellent. Great value but have noticed they're getting up there in price. Few years back, you could find a variety of MIJ in Tokyo for around $600. But.....their gigbags are flimsy, cheap, and don't offer much protection. If you're paying over a $1,000, you deserve a hardcase. I think part of it is that many Japanese use public transportation and carrying a heavy hardcase can get heavy and be a little cumbersome. Japanese gigbags have double straps so you can carry on your back like a backpack. I love the Capri Orange Strat with black pickups and hardware....wonder if it comes with a rosewood fingerboard.
hey troggie. I've been dying to know this. How does Maui blue look in person? In the ads they all look really light, and others they look darker/deeper. How does the color compare in person to how it appears in your video? Is is that rich/deep? lighter? darker? Thanks Troggie
@@leamanc I agree. I’ll soon have my first solid color guitar. Up until my most recent Strat build all my guitars are wood grain/translucent finishes. The Strat I’m building is a relic Sonic Blue faded the Surf Green. I can’t wait to get it all put together.
The currency drop just spiked thousands in America to snoop up Fender Japan exclusives. Honestly, I would have Fender ship some of the Japanese models to the US and have it be part of an “International” or “Japan” series in the US.
Beautifull colour blue. It needs brass saddles though, just for the looks 😀 I have a question, perhaps you know. My 90's tele MIJ has the body a bit flattened where the output of the guitar is. Never seen that on an other tele. Is that specific for that time or something? Maybe I have somerhing special..... 😀
Wood grain lottery indeed I got a ibanez rg421 with a a bit of flame in the neck too I love seeing it on guitars that generally is not supposed to have it

@the_fleeing_dutchman oh ok. I'm stationed in japan and I'd be able to do this. I want to buy a white falcon while I'm here but they're only a little cheaper which is surprising.
that tele is decent but I bought a Classic Vibe blackguard with No-Caster pups with a flamed neck you can see 10 ft. away for maybe a third of the price!
I'm sure they could be better but I'm sure Fender puts the brakes on. The Japanese ones are heavier. And they have a thick coat of poly. Fender decides how good the Japanese fenders will be. They will never be better than the American ones but they could be. Japan knows how to do it.
Dang, the originals are one year off from being a possible birth year guitar option (1980). Interesting they skipped Cathay Ebony (Cathay is related to Hong Kong (like the airline Cathay Pacific, so maybe it was too controversial with all the problems there lately.)
If I were stranded on a desert island and could only have one guitar (with the amp I happened to have) it would be a Telecaster. I own a Mexican made and American made and absolutely love them both.

I got lucky and got a silver sky with an extremely flamed neck
I ate a piece of coal and got lucky and shit out a five carat diamond.
Trogly, your playing is so good on this guitar!
The Telecaster and the Les Paul can be pretty similar counterparts, especially when you compare the Stratocaster and SG.
Pretty good comparison.

A maple fretboard would have made this
Thinking on grabbing a yellow one instead because of the maple fretboard.
Nice tone
Holy crap that is a beautiful telecaster!
Love your show.
Why is the head stock blurred in the beginning. And tape on the serial number for the rest of the videos. Is it for copyright?
What amp was used for the demo? It sounds great!
I have that exact one. Love it

What's the best way to get a mij new fender guitar? I'm interested in the richie kotze n strat
I have a 2016 Squier Affinity Tele with a flamed neck. Depending on the luck of the draw, as you say, a flamed neck can happen at any price point.
Great looking but they have no twang!
I also won the flame lottery a couple weeks ago with a $199 Kramer Baretta Special! The maple fretboard is totally flamed out!
I Like the Decay. Cool.
Another Nippon Fender? It is a nice color 'maui blue'......sounds great too. 😎🎸
Fender Japan are just the most interesting
I have a 2013 blue swirl MiM Telecaster and it has a flamed neck too.
just got the exact same one for 1000 bucks in Delaware USA sing please absolutely incredible
Looks nice
Great video.
I once bought an SX strat for 139€ and got the sickest flamed neck ever. I sold it eventually to buy a real Fender. Should have kept it.
I bought a SX about 18 years ago (looks like a Jazzmaster with part of the butt cut out) with insane flame on the back of the neck. Got crazy lucky.
Those guitars were awesome back in the day. I have an Agile SG from 15yrs ago and man that thing is sweet. Insane quality for what I paid.
Its a tone beast.
