My parents taught me to always pull over and stop when encountering a hearse procession and certainly never to pass one. I understand the motor patrol passing to catch up, but the lack of respect shown by regular motorists certainly shocked me.

IMO it'd be good to emphasize that he was not just a firefighter, but a *volunteer* firefighter. Many Americans do not realize how much of their fire and EMS protection, all over the country and in/around urban areas as well as rural environments, is provided by people who are paid not one penny ever for their service and sacrifices. These people are the best of us.
