I'm always impressed about the usefulness of cheap things ordered from china. Unless I'm mistaken, it should be possible to capture TV-Signals from a reciever with a Scart / Component connection, even if it gets blocked on digital connections... and most TV-Stations only send in 480p /576p anyway.

I remember seeing a couple of documentaries on the VHS era, and they were both very interesting. It was the first time ever we were introduced to "time shifting" television. Prior to VHS machines, you had to be home to watch your favorite show. I never really thought about that. Also something like 70% (if my memory serves me correctly) of VHS movies were never released on DVD according to one of the films. Of course a whole bunch of it was junk. There was even a company that paid their employees a bonus to come up with titles for the cover box art before the movie had even been made! They then used the title to write a script, and of course the movies were just awful, but the company made a ton of cash. Why? Because we were all a bunch of knuckleheads who would rent these terrible movies based on the box art. Those were the days! If you plan on doing quite a bit of these video transfers you may want to invest in the Hauppauge HD PVR system, but this device seems to work very well. I am sure you can get the Hauppauge in PAL format. I have bought a couple of used machines on Ebay, and the quality of the video is just excellent. It also removes any copy guard so there is no flicker or brightening or darkening of the screen. Cool video...gotta go, going to record my VHS of MAD MAX with Mel Gibson, cool movie!

I originally thought it was because the tapes were 20-30 years old but have managed to play them on my TV with no problems at all. Think I'm gonna have to purchase a different adapter.
@benrec6 did you find a solution? I have the same problem, all tapes play fine via the TV, but when I use the same VCR and cables with the USB device some of the footage is bad quality, lots of lines appear. My VCR has an indicator for when the footage is in stereo and I have noticed that mono footage works fine, but stereo footage has the issue - this can even happen with the exact same tape, so it must be to do with how certain footage was recorded onto it.

I always had trouble with my easy cap, mainly because of software support. I recently purchased one of the ClearClick Video to Digital Converter 2.0 (Second Generation) and so far I like it. It does all of the conversion within the device itself and the only thing I have to do is unplug the USB from the device after I stop recording from the VHS tape and then copy to my computer.
Good video. But you should use the S/video. The composite has 2 signals in it that the S/video separate. If you look at the 2 signals with a oscilloscope one will over lap with the other signal some. I use win 10 on my PC and device works out of the box, just be awaire that application like skype tend to ise it as a Mic without telling you as soon as you set it up.
One week later from watching the tutorial, after actually trying to convert the tapes (which I was able to thanks for the video), I was wondering if there were any other softwares that could convert the tapes without a watermark. You see I'm converting them for someone other than myself so I would prefer it watermark-free :)
I'm in a middle of trying to save one of my friend's tape, it has that green and purple colour flickering (like you're seeing it at 14:28). It's annoying but have to accept it as it is an old tape.
@@khuramkhan Hi, I experienced the same issue with EasyCap. For this reason I purchased "Ezcap" video capture device (similar to EasyCap). With Ezcap I don't experience the flickering problem and in general I could get a better quality. So instead of EasyCap I recommend to purchase Ezcap.
I used this cheap USB device and yes it does work quite well, however I achieved much better results copying old VHS tapes using an old but good quality DVD recorder. It takes more effort putting the video on to DVD's and then saving the DVD's onto a computer but the results are much much better. Buying a high quality 2nd hand VHS player is also recommended and you can find these things quite cheap or even for free as people throw them away.
I bought this for a little while but now when I record, it gives me this black and white picture with color bar flickering. I was told to fix that, I have to convert it from PAL-NTSC but I don't know how to do that any ideas?
Love your video so very helpful. Just a quick question once you burn movies onto dvd can you use the device again? I have tried but not getting anywhere.
They make SCART to S-Video cables just like the composite one he is using.... Its why I suggested it because S-Video is far better quality than composite especially if he is archiving.
I got one of these. Windows 10 x64 doesn't recognize the driver provided. Tried both with Home and Pro edition (two computers), same problem : no image. When I click options, the fields are blank, it doesn't detect the device. Perhaps the electrics in the converter are bad - not surprising from chinese products. I then went to read the negative reviews on Aliexpress and all say the same. I don't know if others were lucky, but to me and others it just doesn't work.
I was searching for drivers for windows 10, but I have found another solution. When you get easycap capture usb , you should have instalation cd with it. You put cd in CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM) and copy the files on CD to your HDD. Before next step I recomend to turn of your internet connection, so you will not download any rootkit, because to instal drivers you need to turn off drivers signing enforcement. Next step: press SHIFT and click on RESTART (AT THE SAME TIME, its very important). It´s for disable driver signing enforcement which if is on, will not allow you to instal old drivers. How to do it, is in this video: ruclips.net/video/YafV2zlGA38/видео.html After you follow these steps in the video, you need to turn on compatibility on setup of your drivers (files in the folder you copy from CD) (right click- properities- compatibility and choose windows 7, vista or xp. I tried it witch compatibility with windows 7). After that you click on setup and instal drivers . If you do that and still it not allow you to instal drives, you need to open device manager and then put usb easycap into your pc and connect it with VCR. When you connect it you should seen new device in device manager. Clik on it and choose upgate drivers and choose find drivers in this pc. Then you have to choose it from the folder you copy from your cd. Find folder callled DRIVERS and choose 64 bit version, then click instal. I had on CD program ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO, but sound was not working, so I download DEBUT VIDEO CAPTURE SOFTWARE and instal it. You need to choose input your easycap usb and best quality in settings and it should work. When you turn off or restart your pc, then driver signnig enforcement will be on again and easy cap usb wil be not working, because its driver will be blocked by driver signing eforcement. If you want to continue you just only need to disable driver signning enforcement (ruclips.net/video/YafV2zlGA38/видео.html) . No need for instalation of drivers again. And dont forget to turn off internet connection (just for safety) After you finish recording VHS to pc I recomend to restar your pc, so the driver signing enforcement will turn on again. After that you can turn on internet connection. I hope it help. Let me know if it work for you or not. I am sorry for my english, but I am not native english speaker.
Good video. I bought one of these devices but I seem to be having trouble getting it to work properly. Using Windows 10. I might need to try and get it to work on Win XP.
Hi, I have only just found this video and I am impressed at how simple you make it all look. I have exactly the same device as yours but no software. I was recommended to use OBS software but it is so complicated to set up and after several attempts I still cannot get it to work. Can you please advise what software you use in your video ? Thank you. Chris.
I purchased an easy cap and some videos it plays fine like the first one you showed. And others it shows very grainy like the second video you showed. All of the videos play fine on television. It only looks grainy on my computer. That leads me to believe the easy cap is the issue. It's not the tapes. I might just have to pay more for a better device to get a better digital quality copy.
what version is your easycap driver? My driver is 6/212006 (10.0.17134.1) version and has picture problems with Windows 10. Is there newer version of driver?
The problem wasn't the OBS software it was the lack of a driver for the Easier Cap device. No one seems to supply a driver for this device enabling it to work on Windows 10.
Hi MVVblog I am sure the software, does some stuff :-) It's fine for this home use,,, these familie party things, are so boring to watch anyway. Thank you for watching! :-)
Thanks...yes im sure with these cheap version capture cards video quality will be lost during conversion but as long its not too bad that will b good for me
Hi, thank you for your video. Can you tell me if there will be a problem with the audio recording if there is only one audio ouput on my old VHS player? Would it be better if my VHS player had both outputs to get a better audio recording? Thanks
You can eak a bit more quality out of the capture by using proper 75 ohm coax for as much of the cable as possible, using a SCART adapter. A lot of the composite ringing (seen as the cross-hatching or 'chequerboard' pattern on high-contrast edges) will be reduced.
@@MyPlayHouse My pleasure! Nice, down to earth and jargon-free video. Just to clarify, you can get SCART adapters with RCA sockets for a composite video cable (and usually audio). Composite is somewhat maligned because people assume 'a cable is a cable' and expect 'shoelace' types to work. Via 75 ohm coax composite can be better than RGB/component via a cheap/crappy SCART.
This device is supposed to be compatible with both NTSC and PAL. The issue I'm having with this device is stereo audio being mixed down to mono and a DC offset is put on the audio. This is not a good thing. As far as video, it works pretty good. I did not use the provided software. I used the built in Camera App on Windows 10, and I understand it will work with OBS software.
I had an easy cap and by the time i took it out of t he box to use it (3-4 months) its plastic cover was disintegrating making the thing so sticky,i could hardly throw it out because it kept sticking to my hand.
Hi OIdiesCentral Thank You very much! I have had that happen to kitchen appliances,, it's a nice surfaces finish when they are brand new.. but melts over time. Thank you for watching! :-)
Thanks for the review although the quality I get from Easycap is pretty... unsatisfactory. Not willing to dish out a lot of money on something more expensive that I'll be using for one time only so I'll do what I can with it.
Thanks this is really helpful. I have been trying to get my home movies off VHS for weeks with no luck. I didn't realise I couldn't do it with windows 10 ☹️ Also I do not have the scart adapter, I am plugging into the video player using the yellow white and red sockets (with a male to male adapter between). Will this not work?
thanks for the video, but you didn't mention that the low quality video was refer to the capture card or the same quality is same as connecting VHS to TV, hope you will guide me because i'm gonna buy the same card
Here in early 2022. I had read that some EasyCaps only have monophonic audio, even if you have left & right audio inputs. What was your experience, did yours actually have separate left & right stereo? And how is the sound quality, what was highest sample rate, etc?
What PC specifications are needed for VHS video capturing with the EasyCAP? When I record it all goes well but when I hit playback the video has some frame rate drops. I am using an 7 year old ASUS laptop with 1 GB VRAM.
I have this exact thing, under a different name. Very useful, spent around 30h copying old VHS tapes, definitly worth every cent

The exact same when viewed from the tv is smooth and yields perfect colour. Of course I'm trying with windows 10 now, but will change OS and see if that makes a difference..
And yes, it does show smooth output usually, the tears and colour loss appear at will of the Easycap. Again, no such issues with direct playback.

@@MyPlayHouse I baught this device and I use it to captutre my old console and 89 bits computers on My PC. It is a nice device and your video is well made and instructive.
I found it usefull and the drivers you link where just a very good idea. Especially for the software.
I did put all the software in the description,, I did not see a watermark.

I'm in a middle of trying to save one of my friend's tape, it has that green and purple colour flickering (like you're seeing it at 14:28). It's annoying but have to accept it as it is an old tape.
Se my new video on this,, I got another grabber and that one have way better picture,, (but bad sound) so it is fixable..
@@MyPlayHouse Is there any software setting solution to this flickering problem? Or is it the hardware issue?
@@khuramkhan Hi, I experienced the same issue with EasyCap. For this reason I purchased "Ezcap" video capture device (similar to EasyCap). With Ezcap I don't experience the flickering problem and in general I could get a better quality.
So instead of EasyCap I recommend to purchase Ezcap.
Yea I have something like this for my VHS tapes of my sons ultra sounds baby video back in the day. Mine is also a USB base setup like yours.

I stay away from VCRs from the 90s or 2000s.. 80s VCRs tend to track tapes much better... They started getting really cheap in the 90s
I have stayed away from VCR since the 90s :-)
Look how cool, I bought this same device just to save the video of MY confirmation too lol
Time has not been kind :-)
I bought this for a little while but now when I record, it gives me this black and white picture with color bar flickering. I was told to fix that, I have to convert it from PAL-NTSC but I don't know how to do that any ideas?
They are for sure a bit buggy!

Hi IrishTiger
Make sure you have a signal comming in.

@@MyPlayHouse I do have a signal.
Humm I do not know,, reinstall :-/
@@MyPlayHouse I tried that but I think it's an issue with the cable I'm using so I have ordered a new cable.
Also,great video.
Love your video so very helpful.
Just a quick question once you burn movies onto dvd can you use the device again? I have tried but not getting anywhere.
Thank you! This thing is for getting analog video, over to be digital. Makes no sense to use it for already digital video.
You need an S-Video cable.... better quality
Hi Brian Froeber
Thank You very much!
Thank you for watching! :-)
They make SCART to S-Video cables just like the composite one he is using.... Its why I suggested it because S-Video is far better quality than composite especially if he is archiving.
HUH??? The SCART has the signal he just needs the cable!! images.philips.com/is/image/PhilipsConsumer/SWV2543W_10-IMS-en_GB?$jpglarge$&wid=1250
On the paper the scart have the S-Video out ( S = separated ) but if you try to use s-video form a normal VHS, you will probably get any signal
The signal encoded to tape is actually composite signal, no point messing around with svideo nonsense when you won't even see a difference
🔴 Bought all this stuff, results were horrible. 240p. Maybe my car stereo, its JVC, but DVDs are 720p. Ijs tho. Thanks for the upload❗️
It’s a bit dodgy,,, hard to get a good resolute
I have no sound, but when i use another software I have sound but no video. Anyone knows what the problem could be?
Hi Ali X
Thank You very much! it very cheap,, not the most easy thing to work with. :-/
Thank you for watching! :-)
I did a later video using windows10 : ruclips.net/video/VSx7MxZIqpk/видео.html
Maybe that will help...
@@MyPlayHouse I think my converting piece is faulty - the electronic part.
How to make it full screen
Hi cuzumbanips cuzumban
I do not think it does that while recording.
Thank you for watching! :-)
good video!! i dont have a CD player on my pc is there any software i can download for windows 10
See my video description!
Has anyone found the drivers for this?
I was searching for drivers for windows 10, but I have found another solution. When you get easycap capture usb , you should have instalation cd with it. You put cd in CD-ROM (or DVD-ROM) and copy the files on CD to your HDD.
Before next step I recomend to turn of your internet connection, so you will not download any rootkit, because to instal drivers you need to turn off drivers signing enforcement.
Next step: press SHIFT and click on RESTART (AT THE SAME TIME, its very important). It´s for disable driver signing enforcement which if is on, will not allow you to instal old drivers. How to do it, is in this video: ruclips.net/video/YafV2zlGA38/видео.html
After you follow these steps in the video, you need to turn on compatibility on setup of your drivers (files in the folder you copy from CD) (right click- properities- compatibility and choose windows 7, vista or xp.
And dont forget to turn off internet connection (just for safety)
After you finish recording VHS to pc I recomend to restar your pc, so the driver signing enforcement will turn on again. After that you can turn on internet connection.
I hope it help. Let me know if it work for you or not.
I am sorry for my english, but I am not native english speaker.

Hi, thank you for your video. Can you tell me if there will be a problem with the audio recording if there is only one audio ouput on my old VHS player? Would it be better if my VHS player had both outputs to get a better audio recording? Thanks
Than you will only have sound in one of the audio channels,, you can on the computer copy the good audio channel to the empty one.
You can eak a bit more quality out of the capture by using proper 75 ohm coax for as much of the cable as possible, using a SCART adapter. A lot of the composite ringing (seen as the cross-hatching or 'chequerboard' pattern on high-contrast edges) will be reduced.
Hi M R A Scott

Thank you for watching! :-)
I bought two of these, one has good video, other has good audio :-/
thanks for sharing the Disc.

Analog is not crap ....The red white and yellow connectors are RCA types Yellow is video and white and red are audio
The resolution on video recorded analog on VCR’s is very low from today’s point of view.
Thanks for the review although the quality I get from Easycap is pretty... unsatisfactory.
Not willing to dish out a lot of money on something more expensive that I'll be using for one time only so I'll do what I can with it.
I also think it would be okay to spend a few $ more..
The yellow, white, and red cables are composite A/V.
