    I believe her husband was in charge of the qualifying events for Australia since the process was outsourced to local entities, since the Olympic committee was not familiar with the breakin scene. Hence she most likely didn't make it to the Olympics out of meritocracy.

      @@by9thplanet This is a fake claim tho. Do a bit more research and you'll see they aren't even a part of the association at all. Everyone's just trying to trying to come up with shit to downplay Raygun. The 9 judges for the oceanic qualifier to make it to Paris, were all international judges too.

    unexpected topic to address lol. i know nothing about breaking so i thot i just didnt understand raygun's performance.. it looked very silly to me but i didn't know why (i admit i laughed when she was just rolling on teh floor cuz she looked like my cats on catnips...), so thank you again for the informative video, as usual.

      Ouu, early 2000s was a crazy time too. ppl pushing the boundaries. I can absolutely see how you'd be offended. Like if I saw a DJ battle championship at the olympics (obvi would never happen) and someone was competing who shouldn't ahve even qualified, id be mad for the culture and for the artform.
      i'm sure you put it lots of hours on the linoleum, worked through injuries, etc. and you've built up a passion and respect for your artform. and to see someone represent so badly would def break some hearts. :/

    Raygun didn't just disrespect breaking, she disrespected Australian sport by wearing the national colours.
    Australia is very accommodating; until you don the green and gold. Outside commentators simply have no idea how central sport is to our national identity. It is religion. She has committed an unforgivable sin and I guarantee will never live it down.

      what up Azmania. Thank you for your passionate perspective. from the perspective of representing her country, which you state is very chill until you are called to represent... takes ish seriously. And as an Aussia native, maybe she should have been a better steward of her representation. I'm also hearing the way she got in was a huge conflict of interest. Thank you for adding another dimension to my perspective

    Bro I fk with this video heavily, the amount of unwarranted hate to not only Hip-Hop/Breaking but even Raygun herself is just disheartening. Every Olympic sport has athletes who underperform yet why is a it that breakdancing in general gets talked down upon to the extent it did. As for Raygun herself she qualified because of the criteria and by the fact that there aren’t many B-Girls in Australia’s competitive breaking scene. If you ask me she’s setting the stepping stones for their country for more B-girls to come up. And isn’t that what Hip-Hop is all about representing your country, city, or block? She’s done that in more ways than most. Now I’m not saying her breaking was good, my goodness it was executed poorly. But I respect her for trying to be unique not many are willing to step out of their comfort zone in breaking. Which leads to formulaic repetition.

    • @by9thplanet
      @by9thplanet  5 месяцев назад

      yooo! ty my g. you make some really good points. I also felt a pronounced criticism of the breakdancing event. from what I'm learning, I am hearing there is some scandal on how she qualified that goes beyond Australia potentially having slim pickings. Her bf and coach apparently pushed her thru to represent and ppl have pointed out other aussies who might have been better than her. it's so interesting.
      and yea! I def feel tho that you can have a concept that is unique while also performing well on the other aspects. But as far as why she leaned SO FAR into just the creative aspect, I feel she had a logic behind it and ppl are not giving her that.

    • @Azmania3000
      @Azmania3000 5 месяцев назад

      The flak she's receiving in Australia isn't due to her underperforming; but more that her performance appeared disingenuous. No one in Australia thinks that winning is essential. However, your performance should be genuine and the best of your ability.
      It has not promoted breaking here. The stigmata has been immediate and deep.

      @@by9thplanet Hmmm that’s news to me I’m going off of how other breakers in that space talk about her. I mean sure there’s always bias in breaking events I mean take a look at the battle between Shigekix and Phil Wizard, both Bboy Ronnie and Kid David believed Shigekix had won. But when all is said and done it is a matter of execution her moves fell flat because it lacked the presence that most Bboys and Bgirls naturally have. I watched her other battles and her demeanor was different but in the Olympics you can tell she knew she stood no chance whatsoever so she had fun with it and that was not perceived well.

    • @dhanimals.
      @dhanimals. 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Azmania3000 I was under the impression that she had been in the breaking scene in Australia for a bit seeing that some prominent breakers defend her. But ultimately it does come down to how you execute your performance especially on a stage like this it wasn’t perceived well. She chose to have fun with it and at that level of course it’ll seem disingenuous but you can tell she has genuine love for the dance. It’s just that’s what people don’t want to see especially when you’re representing your country.
