A4 is a paper size (not a type). It is the standard size for copy paper in many countries. But US and some other countries have a different standard ("letter size"), so check the measurements of your paper
I MADE IT!!!!! Finally! It's so satisfying even if the result wasn't that beautiful but it still works perfectly. The first time I tried it was years ago and gave up at the end. Today I decided to try it again and finally grasp the concept... Awesome tutorial as always *thumbs up*
Dude, I tried to make it and didn't have A4, so I looked up how to make a piece of A4 from letter, and completely failed, then came back to it some 9 years later and now its like, oh gee that wasn't too bad XD
I remember when I watched this for the first time, probably when it came out cause I was like 12 and thought it looked awesome and I struggled a lot doing those diagonal marks all over the paper but I did. Then I did the bottom swirl and tried the second one but I couldn't and cried and thought I was dumb and too young to be able to do this. Seven years later I thought about this spring paper and remembered how hard it was that I've never finished it. And said "well, maybe now that I'm more skilled than when I was 12 I should try and finish it". Now I'm 19 and oh boy, what a nightmare. I couldn't even do the second row of the diagonal marks. I crumpled the paper, went bed and cried just like when i was 12.
Bernardo Flores well I’m lucky to have learned origami very young cause it is great for selling origami and just having it around just a tip it will be hard at times so take small breaks and remember to know that all that stress is gone and you can be proud of your work
There was a video from another guy who showed an easy method to do the diagonal foldings,, it was very easy after that. Can't remember the name of the video or the channel, but if i find it ill link it here
I can't compliment you enough for being so wise and considerate enough to leave out an obtrusive background music. Why do so many people insist on adding atrocious audio tracks to their videos? Thank you, sir, for not doing so. I enjoyed your video very, very much.
@@juanbomfim22 i did it a month ago, maybe try easier pieces with intricate folds like these just to practice maybe then you’ll be able to do this one-
if you use half of a square, the circles formed when you collapse will not be complete. But it will be easier to collapse, so it can be a good way to learn how to make it
Try refolding your creases after folding and making them more stronger which will make your twisting part easier to do as the paper will come to the place its supposed to be perfectly :)
It has been about 4 ish years since this video was posted. I remember from day one attempting this model and failing again and again. Today is May 23, 2017 and I am so happy to say I finally made it. After so many failed attempts it worked out! So I know people can do this!!! Good luck everyone!! :) it's possible haha
this is beautiful, the 'twisting/crushing' motion is very off putting (feels like you're destroying the many minutes you've put in) but once you get on with the motion it just slides into place.. Amazing design
OTHER PAPER SIZES You can do some math to make sure it will work: Remember that 'D' is the MINIMUM number of lengthwise divisions, 'L' and 'W' is the length and width of your paper, And assuming you make ~16 or more widthwise divisions: D = πL/W But, to make sure you have some extra wrap over (to avoid lengthwise gap), use this : D = 3.5×(L/W) Or more accurately (more complex) D = (2π+∅)L/2W , where ∅ is the wrap over angle in radians. FOLDING ACCURACY: If you're getting collisions at the centre, start over with accurate creases. (And maybe a thinner paper) If you reduce the widthwise divs, it'll look less circular, same if you increase the lengthwise divs too much above 'D'. To get a longer spring, use a longer paper. To get a more circular spring (v. hard to fold), increase widthwise divs. The lengthwise divisions get converted to an '×' in the spring: ×××××××× For any (general) spring(geeky): D = (L/W)×n×tan((2π+∅)/2n) where 'n' is the no. of widthwise divs. Cheers!
This was the first one I rage-quit. I spent about 40 minutes very, very carefully trying to do the first "twisting" step, gradually crumpling the paper more and more, then my hands just spontaneously jammed together and ripped the thing apart. Very satisfying. Nice model - I may try again, but I hope not for a while.
I finished it in my third attempt. It is not prefect but it looks okay I guess. It is time-consuming but not difficult. Tip: If you take your time and make your folds precisely, then rotating the paper gets easier. Don't rush.
@@jonakashima OMG you responded! I've been watching your tutorial since I was 8, so I feel really honored. Again, thank you so much for your tutorials.
*Do not use normal A4 printing/copy paper* I can say that I tried 3 times with normal A4 printing/copy paper, and it _did not work even once_. However, when I tried slightly stiffer paper that was more like actual origami paper, it _worked the first time_.
PVTheChosenOne The paper I used in the video is standard copy paper. Maybe there are better options, but I think copy paper is ok (I haven't tried other types of paper)
Jo Nakashima Oh, ok. While using normal copy paper may be possible, I have found that much less skill is required when using more stiff paper, as it doesn't get crumpled as easily, which helps a great deal when doing the complex twisting step. One more thing - are you going to be doing any more dynamic models (ones like the fireworks, spring and jacob's ladder) in the near future?
Having made a fair number of these I would advise that you can fold the diagonals in mid-air (without a flat surface) by pinching both corners, so pre-folding the grid is enough to complete the model without needing a desk (i.e. on the bus)
okay so one of the subtle nuances of your folding is that the fingers on the inside are pulling up as the fingers on the outside are collapsing along folds . Creating that twist that only becomes centerd after the tube comes complete circle
This will be one of my absolute fave origami. I been doing this for 5 years. Can't say I have mastered it but it got better. It is my way of wasting time on a boring class. Just saying.

OTHER PAPER SIZES
You can do some math to make sure it will work:
Remember that
'D' is the MINIMUM number of lengthwise divisions,
'L' and 'W' is the length and width of your paper,
And assuming you make ~16 or more widthwise divisions:
D = πL/W
But, to make sure you have some extra wrap over (to avoid lengthwise gap), use this :
D = 3.5×(L/W)
Or more accurately (more complex)
D = (2π+∅)L/2W , where ∅ is the wrap over angle in radians.
FOLDING ACCURACY: If you're getting collisions at the centre, start over with accurate creases. (And maybe a thinner paper)
If you reduce the widthwise divs, it'll look less circular, same if you increase the lengthwise divs too much above 'D'.
To get a longer spring, use a longer paper. To get a more circular spring (v. hard to fold), increase widthwise divs.
The lengthwise divisions get converted to an '×' in the spring: ××××××××
For any (general) spring(geeky):
D = (L/W)×n×tan((2π+∅)/2n)
where 'n' is the no. of widthwise divs.
Cheers!
That looks complicated!
