  • How to make the origami Spring into Action, designed by Jeff Beynon
    Difficulty level: upper intermediate
    My paper:
    A4 (-1/4) copy paper
    COOL PRINTABLE PATTERNS to fold this model:
    goo.gl/eC6I8
    ABOUT LETTER SIZE
    If your paper is Letter size (8.5 by 11 inches), you'll have to cut into 5.875 (5 + 7/8) by 11 (not 1/4 of the paper like on the video!). Then divide into thirds and continue at 2:12
    (Or you can print the image below!)

    A4 is a paper size (not a type). It is the standard size for copy paper in many countries. But US and some other countries have a different standard ("letter size"), so check the measurements of your paper

    I remember when I watched this for the first time, probably when it came out cause I was like 12 and thought it looked awesome and I struggled a lot doing those diagonal marks all over the paper but I did. Then I did the bottom swirl and tried the second one but I couldn't and cried and thought I was dumb and too young to be able to do this.
    Seven years later I thought about this spring paper and remembered how hard it was that I've never finished it. And said "well, maybe now that I'm more skilled than when I was 12 I should try and finish it". Now I'm 19 and oh boy, what a nightmare. I couldn't even do the second row of the diagonal marks. I crumpled the paper, went bed and cried just like when i was 12.

  • @jonakashima
    @jonakashima  11 лет назад +9

    I haven't tried cutting 1/4 of letter size, but it will work for sure if you cut a rectangle with the correct ratio (5.875 by 11 inches).
    You can also use the printable pattern (link on video description) to make the striped spring like the one on the thumbnail of this video (the image has the proper ratio, so it works with any paper size)

  • @jonakashima
    @jonakashima  11 лет назад +16

    thanks!
    When I make the pinch mark I use the existing horizontal thirds to find 1/3 of the diagonal line. And 1/3 of the diagonal is also 1/3 of the rectangle, both horizontally and vertically

    *Do not use normal A4 printing/copy paper*
    I can say that I tried 3 times with normal A4 printing/copy paper, and it _did not work even once_.
    However, when I tried slightly stiffer paper that was more like actual origami paper, it _worked the first time_.

    • @osrevad
      @osrevad 10 лет назад +3

      A4 paper is different than standard american 8.5'' x 11'' paper

    • @HeyItsPV
      @HeyItsPV 10 лет назад +3

      What I meant is that the thickness/stiffness of normal copy paper (no matter what size) isn't suitable for this tutorial.

    • @jonakashima
      @jonakashima  10 лет назад +12

      PVTheChosenOne The paper I used in the video is standard copy paper. Maybe there are better options, but I think copy paper is ok (I haven't tried other types of paper)

    • @HeyItsPV
      @HeyItsPV 10 лет назад +3

      Jo Nakashima Oh, ok. While using normal copy paper may be possible, I have found that much less skill is required when using more stiff paper, as it doesn't get crumpled as easily, which helps a great deal when doing the complex twisting step.
      One more thing - are you going to be doing any more dynamic models (ones like the fireworks, spring and jacob's ladder) in the near future?

    OTHER PAPER SIZES
    You can do some math to make sure it will work:
    Remember that
    'D' is the MINIMUM number of lengthwise divisions,
    'L' and 'W' is the length and width of your paper,
    And assuming you make ~16 or more widthwise divisions:
    D = πL/W
    But, to make sure you have some extra wrap over (to avoid lengthwise gap), use this :
    D = 3.5×(L/W)
    Or more accurately (more complex)
    D = (2π+∅)L/2W , where ∅ is the wrap over angle in radians.
    FOLDING ACCURACY: If you're getting collisions at the centre, start over with accurate creases. (And maybe a thinner paper)
    If you reduce the widthwise divs, it'll look less circular, same if you increase the lengthwise divs too much above 'D'.
    To get a longer spring, use a longer paper. To get a more circular spring (v. hard to fold), increase widthwise divs.
    The lengthwise divisions get converted to an '×' in the spring: ××××××××
    For any (general) spring(geeky):
    D = (L/W)×n×tan((2π+∅)/2n)
    where 'n' is the no. of widthwise divs.
    Cheers!

    Thanks for the tutorial for this Jo, I've been wanted to fold this for years and kept putting it off. The diagrams that I've seen show a crease pattern and then say collapse, so this is really helpful. After the first spiral, I really struggled with the second, but then it got a little easier afterwards... I think I need to practise this a few times! Out of interest, is the ratio of the paper important to the final model? I've worked it out to be approximately 1:1.88.

      Damn right, every single time. I have been creating this origami for over the past 5 years every boring class and when someone borrowed it, it would not comeback until one will come to me and said 'can I have this?, I saw it from ....' feels nice tho, until they ruined it.

      Lol, I made some hard origami for business. Someone even bought my work for 3 dollars. It was a really good time...

    Having made a fair number of these I would advise that you can fold the diagonals in mid-air (without a flat surface) by pinching both corners, so pre-folding the grid is enough to complete the model without needing a desk (i.e. on the bus)

    It is origami, because if you just had the right size of paper you would not need to cut.

    okay so one of the subtle nuances of your folding is that the fingers on the inside are pulling up as the fingers on the outside are collapsing along folds . Creating that twist that only becomes centerd after the tube comes complete circle

    Ok what I did was like make my folds really sharp and good so at the end I could just spin it around to make the spiral... It didn't work -_-. Now I have a crumpled spring into action. FFFFFUUUUUU

    To fold a model that collapses into an octagon, would your paper need to be divided vertically into ninths? Does each rectangle have a ratio of 1:4?
