As a boy I flew many times between USA and UK on Boeing 707s and DC 8s. Then came my first flight on a BOAC Super VC 10. From the airport window it looked like Sci-fi, just BEAUTIFUL. Then we got in and it was so much nicer than what we were used to. Then we accelerated and took off and we were amazed. This was like going from a School Bus (707 and DC 8) to a Ferrari. VC 10s were the best airliners of the time, and are still my favourite.
I agree. Saw a polished aluminum vc10 on a poster of RAF aircraft and thought it the most beautiful airliner out of 60 or so. That's how I ended up here
787 and 747-8 are some of the best looking aircraft. When you get up close you notice subtleties that you don't see from distance, particular in how clean and sleek they are. When you walk around and under neath them, the attention to detail in aerodynamics and making a sleek bird comes into picture. They should replace the 4 of those engines with a pair of GE Nx engines from the 747-8, substantially increase performance while reducing fuel burn.
“They should replace the 4 of those engines with a pair of GE Nx engines from the 747-8, substantially increase performance while reducing fuel burn.” Not to mention GREATLY reducing emissions.
I flew on them in the 1970s courtesy of the RAF & yes I felt it was originally a fighter jet & someone upscaled it! It got so copied everywhere, but this is the original & best. Landings & takeoffs were so smooth. I flew on easyJet for first time this year & it landed like a tank.
This is an RAF VC10, you can tell from the zig zag go fast stripe (& it did!) & there's a small RAF winged logo on the fuselage. I probably flew on this one in the 1970s being in the Army, this one has been converted for inflight refueling & dates from the Millennium.
Oh dear Lord. If I die tonight, I die happy that I've seen this vid. This wonderful, amazing, energetic little plane was and will forever be my favourite. Thank you to whoever posted this! x
Whether it's a VC-10 or an Ilyushin il-62, a T-tail with 4 engines hanging side-by-side off the back end has such an aggressive look for a passenger plane, the VC-10 especially. I'd love to see today's technology adapted to this design.
Don't mention the Russians, they just copied it like Concordski! This is an RAF VC10, you can tell from the zig zag go fast stripe (& it did!) & there's a small RAF winged logo on the fuselage. @@seltaeb9691The Il-62 and VC-10 have more differences than similarities. Look not at the design, but at the technical characteristics and the internal structure.
I've said it before and I'll say it once again: the VC-10 is a Supermodel or Miss Universe among jet airliners. And She sings, too - amazing, nice Conway engine sound! Thanks for Sharing!
What a glorious symphony...spine tingling! Takes me back to plane spotting at Ringway way back when you could go on "the terraces", i can practically smell this video.
How the hell did you know that was going to be there? My favourite airliner of all time! Sends shivers down my spine when I think of the times I was at Ringway in the late '60s and early '70 watching from the spectator terracing on the piers and on top of the terminal building. The smell of the kerosene!! Brilliant!
I was lucky enough in the early 70's to fly on one of these when B.O.A.C., pre-cursor to British Airways, flew one from Kingston Jamaica's Norman Manley International airport. We were traveling from Kingston to New York JFK airport.
I probably flew on this RAF VC10 in the 70s. I done lots of trips, food was good too. We went from the Comet to this. This one has been converted for inflight refueling & must date from the noughties. Farewell oh beautiful bird.
Way back in the 70s this aircraft flown by British Airways was a regular visitor to Australia via Colombo. The Sunday departure out of Perth was special as it flew right over the house. Great memories
Brings back memories of flying on these with the ATC from Brize Norton. We flew up to Scotland for a touch n go landing, then back down again, with lunch provided by the RAF! The seats faced the rear of the aircraft due to RAF safety standards.
Great footage. I would have loved to have seen one in PanAm or TWA markings. The 707 eliminated that but it is a great looking airplane and both crews and passengers loved it. Bean counters, not so much.
I flew on this when it was in ASCOT colours in the 70's. there was nothing better than jumping on a vicky whilst being in the RAF in the far east..... I loved it. especially if I was going to Kai Tak.... now there was an airport. You dont forget these beauties
Me too, in the 70s being in Army. My first time flying aged 18 in 1971 & my first posting too the Bahamas for 1 year. We left Brize for Washington across the silvery pond. I spent the night in the capital & then caught a DC10 for Nassau. There was only about 25 people on it. Landing at Nassau I stepped outside from the air conditioning & felt like I was in an oven. Still the fastest subsonic airliner ever.
We too had the privilege of flying on the VC10 backwards and forwards to boarding school in England from Malawi, two stops Entebbe or Nairobi, then a Europe stop before Heathrow. Superb flights, I have a screen shot of the VC10 taxiing out to take off at Chilaka airport near Blantyre Malawi as the screen shot on my phone !
By far the most beautiful plane of its class. I live in Berlin and I saw it a few times on the Flugplatz Gatow in the former British Sector in Spandau. Wonderful!
4 x Rolls Royce Conway's wonderful sound. My favourite aircraft as a child living near Manchester Airport and going plane spotting, great memories thanks for uploading
I recall one landing at Wisley airfiled when I worked in the RHS Garden in 1971'2 - I have never forgotten that sound - an awesome almost fearful experience - certainly got the adrenaline flowing!
If I had my own aircraft company (starting in the future) I would produce the Vickers VC-10 again so that thing could still fly. I would also rebuild other planes, like the DC-10, Boeing 727, etc.
Very nostalgic... also I remember these aircraft landing at Heathrow on runway 23, over my house on windy days when i lived in Southall when i was a nipper..the telly used to go weird as the next B707 would be screaming overhead.
That howl just took me back! Many, many military flights and the god awful memory of filling the rear baggage hold manually in the Middle East on a very hot day! As a schoolboy, at 0800 daily the VC10 used to approach Ringway (I believe the Dulles red-eye). We always knew if the school bus was late as we got to see the VC10 on approach before the bus came. Happy memories!
..I saw in my younger years the Vickers VC-10/Super VC-10 (enlarged version) many times as aircraft spotter at RAFG Brüggen Air Station, across the border of Roermon, The Netherlands.. They came as a regular, sometimes daily visitor from Brize Norton, equipped with fuel or supplies.. It made always an impressive appearance due landings and take offs.. You still could here the four Rolls Royce Conway engines roaring after five minutes they had took off... Always noisy with character..!! Great aircraft, unfortunately that era came to an end.. Together with the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar they have been replaced by Airbus A330-200 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker/Transport aircraft).. Also a great aircraft to see... Still operational flying from Brize Norton..
I flew on a British Airways VC-10 passenger flight from Islamabad (Pakistan) to London Heathrow in January 1979. On my way back to Manchester! It was awesome! (Even though I was only 12 years old at that time!)
At around 1.00 you can see the chap in the left hand seat lean sharply forward. I wonder if he is PF, and wanging the throttles fully forward to their stops, as there is no "staged spool-up" of the engines. Amazing stuff. Thanks for sharing. This is a scene that won't be around for long. Enjoy the funbus whilst it's still here!
Love this plane . Sorry the Brits lost out on so many things , even they were ahead in many.I love England and the Queen and have the highest respect .I´m not English
I remember several times in the 2000's when these came through Pease in Newington New Hampshire with an RAF fighter wing on the way to the southwest for training. The VC-10's takeoff rumble was so loud it would set off car alarms all over the area!
An unusual mod to these ageing aircraft, to reduce stress on the outer wings, is above 127 tons both ailerons deflect 3 degrees up (to reduce lift created by the outer wing section) and the flaps are slightly extended to compensate. This only seemed to occur during the climb, around the time we levelled out the wing reverted to the normal clean configuration - due to fuel burn reducing the all up weight. It's not a soul, it's aesthetics. Plus, nothing beats the purity of the turbo jet, versus vacuum cleane... er... turbo fans.
@@dvamateur VC10 has a turbofan tho
In 30 years, we will say the same thing about the planes of today!!!
The VC10 had a roar about it that I don’t think was ever really matched, fighter-jet-like. What a machine.
Ten years on and I still keep coming back to this video! One of the best of the VC-10, IMO.

I maintained these beauties for 18 years, no other aircraft comes close in comparison, Queen of the skies.
These beauties flew me to Africa for my school holidays in the 60s and 70s. Loved them then and LOVE them now and forever.
Those who haven't liked this beautiful video of a VC-10 are vc: visually-challenged.

What a great video. Good quality and no distracting music.
I flew in one of these in 1968. BOAC from London to NY. Great plane!!!
Lucky you!
I never even saw one fly in person.
'67 Entebie to London,first class!
In the days when aircraft didn't fly themselves.
Beautiful. A classic airliner
But now they’re a lot safer 🤷🏻
This thing used to stop our lessons at school when it came over doing it's training from Brize Norton.
I remember the same thing! Couldn't hear a thing every time.
Same goes for schools on Air Force bases. Fighters constantly ruining class
Just that it can be five in a row that lasts 3 minutes not just one
This thing ... what . Thing ??? . is the most beautiful elegant airliner ever built

Gotta love those 4 Conways howling away!! AWESOME sound!! The turbofan engines of today just can't compare to the old turbojets!
I remember spotting at Heathrow in the early 70s - a BOAC VC10 took off and it was the loudest sound I'd ever heard - a real gut rumbler!
STILL one of the most beautiful aircraft to grace the skies ❤️
I agree!
The most beautiful plane ever built. Period.

Man, that's an awesome machine.
I have to admit, being a proud American who takes pride in things that are “Made in the U.S.A.” that this is “ONE BEAUTIFUL AIRPLANE!”
Wow, I must say that is one advanced looking aircraft for the time-frame in which it was built.
What a stunningly beautiful piece of engineering.

It's really sad that the UKs aerospace industry has gone...they've produced some amazing designs over the decades; from WWII to the Concorde.

It was French and British - built by what was to eventually become Airbus.

Best livery was BOAC with a plain navy tail and gold speedbird. Simply stunning and so classy!
Sweet music to my ears.
wish we still had the VC10S Trident 707 and Viscount so flying out of Manchester today
Damn the noise is incredible!
Even Simon's mic can't handle it!

Beautiful!
Just listen to those wonderful Rolls-Royce Conways! Pure magic!
I usually dont like the engines mounted on the back but that is beautiful
Those Rolls-Royce Conways sure pack quite a wallope in the noise department..but I could listen to them all day long
Breathtaking!!!!!
¡yes! the noise of the VC-10, I´m hearing that noise yet, and it were the last sixting when those planes came to the Rodeos. Good Video.
