- A brilliant morning spent at Lancaster station on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from Virgin Trains, Northern, Transpennine Express and freight from DRS.
Lancaster was officially opened in 1846 by the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway, when it was built it was named Lancaster Castle Station which was done to avoid any confusion with another station that already served the town. When it was built it was done so as a terminus station for the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway, there were ideas for a different route but it was done this way because it was deemed to be much cheaper.
After a long old while of not really doing anything the station went through a period of remodelling inbetween 1900-1906, during this time additional lines and platforms were added to keep up with the increase in traffic and passenger numbers using the line, at this stage the West Coast Mainline was starting to take better shape and trains were running from Scotland down into the heart of England and the Southern counties. Along with the new platforms being added new station buildings were being constructed and done in an apparent mock Elizabethan period to suit the castle located not to far away from the station, which did work rather well it must be said.
The station layout hadn't changed at all since this period with the only difference being that in the 1970's when the track layout was rationalised and given to the Preston signal box, during this time the track to the then platform 6 was removed seeing as no traffic had used that platform and the corresponding line for God knows how long. The northern section of the West Coast Mainline was electrified in 1974 and after that electric commuter and express trains were a regular sight running up and down the line.
My next station is going to be Carlisle.

Even with only one freight you still achieved to make yet another informative film complete with your usual repartee and honest commenting.
I'm glad you enjoyed watching this
Great video as usual.Lovely surprise to see the pacer"made my day".
Keep up the great work.
T.T.P.F.
Thanks very much, glad I could supply the daily dosage of pacers!!
Wow that pacer was rattling worse than my tools drawer when it's full 😂😂😂
Fantastic video here! I really enjoyed this :)
Thanks very much
Great video.
Thanks very much
Fantastic video as always. The 195s look stunning. My fave was the 88 at the end, can't get better than that. Keep safe, regards Gary.
Thanks very much, they are great trains to look at when you compare them to the rest of the fleet that Northern currently run. The future is looking good for the railways all over the country. They even seem to have a certain character to them I feel. The 88 was a great sight to see speeding up the line
Lovely Video Mate! I might want to have a stop off in Lancaster when I am in Scotland Next year!
Thanks very much, this is an amazing station to come to!
I thought the trains to Glasgow on the west coast main line via the trent valley went direct from london to warrington
Preston definitely a good one for last. Very nice catching the new trains!
And yet oddly enough it wasn't the best one that I did that day haha
Amazing vid tornado. I haven't been to Lancaster station so it is nice to see u filming there. Those civities are not going to be a rare sight for long now.
Thanks very much, I highly recommend this station it's brilliant to come to
Awsome video Jarred
Thanks very much
Great video
Thanks very much
Cool
Fantastic video, love the commentry.
thank you kindly for saying so
Great video mate! Always enjoy your videos, especially round here on the WCML :)
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed watching this :)
Great video, I get lots of class 156s 158s and a odd pacer in Whitby.
Thanks very much
look on the bright side Jarred, every time you head up North, there will be less and less pacers, as always enjoyed watching, keep up the good work and a thumbs up from me as always
Haha, well that is one way to look at it. The more I go up north the less pacers I will encounter. Just a shame that they are going to be with us for another year at least. But I'm glad you enjoyed watching this
I would not want to sit on a voyager from Scotland to London, the smell of watsits would do my head in 😂
Well if you fancy something even worse Cross Country use a Voyager on the 08:20 Aberdeen - Penzance service, the longest train service in the country coming in at around 13 and a half hours 😂 absolutely torturous but something I actually want to do lol
@@BSRtransport shame theres no direct return...
I like the Pacers. They'll be remove by 195s with the 2 car ones. The Pacers actually look cute 😍🤩
So I'm not theonly person who likes the 142's you know the youtuber trains trains trains made a video about the ugliest trains as voted by channel views and the class 142 placed first
Great film, nice bit of habit at the end. Loved it! B.P.
Thanks very much!
@@Tornado922 As always, I thank you! B.P.
Another good video. The 221's at the start were 221109 and 221105 as I saw them at Wigan on my way to guess where? Lancaster! From Lancaster I travelled to Silverdale on 195120. They are quite a nice ride and better than the Pacers! Whether they're as good as 37's or 68's with mk2 air cons is a matter of opinion and I know which I prefer.
Thanks very much and thanks for letting me know what the numbers were on the voyager units. I have yet to travel on one of the new units but they do look very nice!!
I really like the pendolinos so happy that you managed to catch them. Great video :) Excited for Carlisle as judging by your Instagram there is a handful of freight there which will be good. Also, what’s the difference between a 68 and an 88?
68s are purely diesel engine, 88s are electric with a small diesel engine for shunting along non electrified lines in freight yards etc
The 88's often work double headed flask train to Valley near Holyhead. That's over 100 miles from Crewe without overhead wires.
Ahhh ok thanks guys
Great to see my pacers my good friend.
Also great to see the scottish trains.
T.T.P.F.
I'm happy to help hahaha
Wait I’m confused I’ve seen other videos of Lancaster and they had LNWR why aren’t they here?
good vid
156s are the best dmu ever
I like the old pacers many a day trip to Barry Island on one...good old days. better than the bus,at least they have dedicated drivers cab and no ugly door connector sticking out...suprised the new 195 is a dmu thought they would want emu`s these days. no not rod hull and...
They have new EMU's currently working up around Leeds and Doncaster
Does the Carlisle train stop in Hellifield?
Amazing video tornado
Thanks very much
Will you do Leeds or any station like Wakefield Westage to see the 331s?
I will be going back to Leeds at some stage
@@Tornado922 Lovely ;)
Does the train from Lancaster go to Hellifield
Good video
Thanks very much
Brilliant video tornado 922 I am sorry make to carlise next time u come up
thanks very much, I'm sure we will get something sorted eventually
@@Tornado922 I can't wait
A. Them 195s are really nice and B. 156443 is a b***h it keeps avoiding me, great video I think your train passed mine in the morning between Crewe and Acton Bridge I was on a 350 to Birmingham
The 195's look and sound amazing I have to say :)
Didn’t hesitate to click immediately
thank you kindly
New trains going to Morecambe I see
156s are taking over morecambe and heysham services they've been doing them past month
The Class 195's certainly look better than The Pacers they're replacing inside and out. That and the 195's look longer too.
they look and sound so much better than the pacers in every single way, only another year to go then they are finally gone from the network
3:18
ARE THOSE THE NEW TRAINS?
Yep lol
That Leeds 3-car Pacer looked empty.
It was mostly empty
the class 195 sounds like a class 710
For me it sounds like a 172
@@nonameunfortunately I agree
Ive never seen these new 195s before. Can anyone here give me some info?
They're Northerns brand new units built by CAF in Spain. Basically sound exactly like the 172 Turbostars, in use between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Airport and Barrow in Furness and Manchester Airport currently with more services getting them as more enter service, travelled on all seven that were in service on the first day last Monday and they're quite nice trains
@@BSRtransport Also on Windermere services too
@@agent_605 oh yes of course I totally forgot about them, completely missed the fact that the one in the video that went up the fast line through Lancaster was heading for Windermere
carslile date?
I had filmed it on the same day
Cheers thanks for letting me know 🙃
What is it with the new trains and their brakes? XD Jesus
Whilst they look amazing their brakes are horrid hahaha
@@Tornado922 should stand on the platform with several cans of WD40 as they roll past XD obviously that would be a bad idea, but aint half tempting non the less
@@Tornado922 so we still have a bit the Pacer lol 😂
I was there yesterday so would you support me in your next video .
support you in what sense?
It’s interesting how the railway system is similar to Australia
In what way? I'm curious to know where the similarities are :)
