    • @MisterDeets

      Will research that! Thanks for the heads up! I cannot find a power supply that will fit in the form factor that I need above 4 amps and the calculations he provided of 20 ma per each leg of the LED's gives me 7.2 amps draw. I think the real world draw is considerably less than that, but really don't want to find those limits. I could set this feature to 3.5 amps to build in a bit of safety factor and then program away happily knowing that I can't fry my power supply by accident.

    Do you just stick your LEDs to the wall with their sticky backing, or put them in aluminium channels?

    Hi Dave, your videos are very well made and a pleasure to watch. It's fun to watch pros program with FastLED! I'm not yet finished watching, but I'd like to say that displaying an oled display can hugely lower the frame rate (that's my personal experience). I've even come to conclude that oled displays are better not used at all with FastLED. Perhaps you could work around that issue by assigning that task (displaying the oled) to a different core, if at least you need a high frame rate (ESP32 should have 2 cores). I didn't try that out myself as I rather run a webserver, which is assumed to also capture a core. Note that I am an amateur by all means. Have a nice day and keep making nice videos!

    • @DavesGarage
      @DavesGarage  4 года назад +2

      Thanks, and a good point! My practical solution to this is, as you say, a low priority task on the second core. I didn't want to complicate the intro with that, but we might get there eventually! In my own major project I'm having trouble with hardware SPI so am running the screen in software, which is super slow, so I had to solve it somehow! It only updates about 4 times a second, if that.

    • @joryp1158
      @joryp1158 4 года назад

      @@DavesGarage Great, looking forward to those episodes! For now it would indeed complicate everything.
      For my own project, even updating the screen (I2C protocol) once per minute caused an annoying lag in some animations, which made me disable all oled updates in animation mode. I'm just telling you this because hunting such 'lag buggs' while nothing is wrong with the code can be a pain!

    Just working thru this series - aiming to take my kids through them afterwards (they like playing with LEDs too).
    Happen to have some slightly different kit lying around - so using a Lolin D32 for ESP32 and a nokia 5110 screen instead of an OLED - using the same libraries - just a little fiddling on the constructors - and it all works well.
    But - I was going mad - once I added the fastled code - the LEDs blinked like crazy. In fact - they seemed to blink along with the onboard LED.
    Took me a while to figure it - and you may have guessed it already :) - but this code is the reason (from the d32 header files):
    static const uint8_t LED_BUILTIN = 5;
    Oh - look - the same pin I have the pixels data line :)
    Oh well - made me smile.

    Excellent!!!! I found using GPIO 23 for LED DATA on my DOIT ESP32 DEVKIT V1 gave low output during reset and avoids full brightness on power-up. I was trying GPIO3 but it comes up as a driver and is high for about 250ms until the pin gets setup, long enough to confuse all the WS2812Bs and set the controls for the heart of the sun.

      So far each one except the very first uses the same board, but I might link to a different catalog entry perhaps? It should be the Hiletgo ESP32 w/ 0.96" OLED. I prefer the one sold by "Maker Focus", but I bet they're all the same. I did just switch to a link to a version that contains extra PSRAM for free, pretty much. So it's not the the *requirements* have changed (any of the boards will work with any of the projects).
      I guess the one exception was the very first episode where I used a board with a colored LED onboard to keep it super simple, but I won't switch often, honest ! Though I do like the M5Stick-C, check that out, as it is what I am tinkering with now! But I still have dozens of Hiletgo units :-)

    Dave, is there a fastLED setting that regulates the communication speed to the WS2812B strip? I wanted to test my strip with just Red for each RGB led, then just green, then just blue to verify the individual LED were good. My string is 300 LEDs long. I have a separate 5V 20A supply for the strip. I connected the Gnd from the ESP dev board to the negative of the power supply so that the 5V power and the signal to the Data In on the strip (I’m using IO16 from the dev board) have the same common reference point. In the setup, I use a for loop to set all 300 elements of the CRGB array to 0xFF0000 so all 300 LEDs will powering only the Red LED. In the loop section, no changes are made to the CRGB array. I did leave fastLED.show() in the loop. I do not have an oled screen, but put a delay(250) in the loop. The string lights up red, but then glitch flickers to sometime showing blue briefly, and sometimes flickering to green briefly, but mostly stays on red. The CRGB data going out should never change. I’m thinking the speed of the ESP32 might be causing the data rate to be too high and the receiving WS2812B chips are not clocking in the data consistently.

    It is a good job that there are people like you making these videoas. Excellent i have followed your code using 20 LEDs and the LEDs fade in and out, i have now tried 60 LEDs and the LEDs switch on and off without any fading. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

    I'm curious as to what LED size strips you are using? Is it 96 LEDs/meter, or 144 LEDs/M? Hard to find these in longer than 1M strips online.

    Hi Dave! I’m following along at home, but I noticed some of your affiliate links no longer work. Do you have any current recommendations? Thank you.

    Hey Dave any plans of creating a tutorial on how to use your editor? Unlike you I am the hardware guy, not a coder. Your job is way harder that frying components!!

    Dave, looking at following your tutorials for a fun side project. Do you know of a ESP32 board/setup that doesn't require any soldering?
