Nicely done. If you add a "table" around the firebox its a total gamechanger just add at least 16 inches longer on each side. Something like a 3x3 foot shelf with a vertical walk of 1 or 2 inches up at the edge. Like angle iron frame to keep the unburnt charcoal in. I love using charcoal there isn't any clinker like when using coal or coke. I also had just a firebox for a while it definitely worked okay for forging. But with the extra space around its soooo much nicer to manage the fire and hold your irons. The best part about metal smithing is constantly teaching yourself new things and learning. You might have 4 diffrent forges in no time now. And a dozen tongs. And a few anvils. And an epic pile of materials Hahaha
That works.. but Once you add the table. You want a higher pile of charcoal and the work should be level otherwisethere is too much oxidation at the bottom. It will eat your iron up. It doesn't matter too much with charcoal but it definitely helps. With coke and coal it gets super oxidized down in the bottom. Also the extra charcoal on top add insulation and keeps the oxygen layer off kinda like shielding gas when welding. The fire around it consume the oxygen before it gets against your work piece/ iron
I agree I do need a table around it....but first I have to build a smithing shed.....more projects. It is a ton of fun. I may be getting addicted to it!
awesome man! Time for an anvil
Thanks.....and an anvil is next but I'm buying one lol
Thats a cool project,nice work.
Thanks 👍
