COOK ISLANDS FOOD | Where do locals eat in Rarotonga, Cook Islands?

- What tourists eat in Cook Islands is quite different than what the locals eat. So, what is the most popular Cook Islands food that people eat in Rarotonga Cook Islands?
Surprisingly, there are some laid back and cheap places to eat in Cook Islands, and I visited a few of them.
These take-away places are scattered everywhere throughout the island. In Rarotonga, I visited the popular Sea Salt Takeaway and Rarotonga Chicken, which are two of the most popular places to eat on the island.
WARNING: Beware of the actual LIVE chickens while eating in some Cook Islands restaurants. They will try to steal your food, and one hen managed to do just that and have a peck of my lunch.
Basically, Cook Islanders are like the rest of us - and when they go out to eat, they like fast food too.
But if you want to check out some of the traditional foods of Cook Islands, there's lots of places to do that. To learn more, check out our handy guide: "Cook Islands Food - Design a Do It Yourself Polynesian Food Tour" at:

Hahaha funny rooster!!
That is not a fruit. I dnt knw what the English name is but we call it 'PATA APUKA' There is a marble like pip inside of the green layer. When its mature, it turns black and it dries up. We take the pip and scrape it on concrete or sand paper it down. Kids can use it for playing marbles or we use it for costumes for our culture dancing. Can make lei's (ei as we call it) They have so many uses. Some people use it for medicinal purposes and the list goes on.
OH wow, thank you for the insider's information. I had no clue. Things we learn everyday!
UTAHS QWEEN78 Amen Amen 🙏🏽
You should have gone to Palace across the road, that’s where us islanders go 😂

My only gripe about my trip is finding local food. Discovered 'Bite Time' by chance after visiting the fish shop in town, I was that frustrated that I was going to make my own raw fish, lol. And then I found minase, poke and other yummy stuff at the super brown shops.
LOL Cook Islands food is definitely a unique experience!
wow this place is really nice and the narrative of vlog was captivating, just got immersed in it. Keep creating looking forward to more coming vlogs. I also make travel films on my channel would love to have you there, whenever you get time.
Absolutely - thank you so much for watching!

Raro Fried Chicken is popular only because its where everyone goes too after a night out of clubbing and drinking.
Next time you go you have to order the Wet Cheese Burger or Palace Burger from Palace Takeaways
Visit Highland Paradise for cultural experience & traditional island food.
Waffle Shack is popular located at the Punanga Nui market in town & if you wanna eat like an islander get the Flying fish meal that's right next to Waffle Shack.
Ariki cafe, Charlies cafe & the Mooring cafe are all top yummy places you MUST visit whilst on holiday
Hey Selly, Thanks for your comment. Yes, I would love to go back to Raro someday and will keep your suggestions in mind for a visit.
Meitaki :)
I love your videos.
Thank you!
What times and days of the week are the markets on. Thanks.... Will be there next Tuesday 😀
Here's the information on its main website:
Whilst the market is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, Saturday is the main market day with all the stalls, shops and huts occupied with vendors, with the bonus of a live show on stage! The market closes at 2pm on Saturday.

It's not a fruit to eat, it's a type of big seed inside to make necklate or maybe I'm wrong lol.
Thank you for clarifying :)
You should get wet cheese from palace Takeaway
I will keep your suggestion for the next visit! Thanks for watching!

Good to know 😀
Anyone know if that restaurant is still there, they have writing all on the ceiling. Customers write on it.... And they had amazing pancakes.
Hmm I didn't recall seeing any writings on the ceiling 🤨
@@theRTWguys it would have been on the west side.....and I am pretty sure that it was on the inland side not the ocean side.
I'll look around the next time we're in Cook Islands!!
Feeding the chickens anywhere in public is frowned upon😉
Fully noted!

Don't compare a wee little island to n.z is much bigger and it's bus service.
@@peterstowers5748 I apologize. I didn't mean to upset.
@@dannybooyaka No i'm not
upset about it as I've been there and it takes about 35 or 40 min. to get around the
main island.
@@peterstowers5748 yes because the speed limit is 40kmh and 50 in some areas

The Democratic Party sure is going all out on Anti-Trump Ads before these You Tube Videos...only make me want to VOTE FOR TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT in 2020 EVEN MORE!!!
We stay away from Politics on our YT Channel.
Dont feed cooked chicken bones to the dogs.
That was the dilemma, however, locals suggest that their dogs are used to chicken bones.
@@theRTWguys id go with your original thought. You had it right the first time.
