Could be the carburetor but just spray starting fluid to see first.I had an issue with an engine and I changed everything and it still didn’t work.I ended up replacing the cam and it worked perfectly.Sometimes new parts go bad.Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah since you got your compression back after the valve adjustment that was probably the problem.The longer chromolly rods might expand more and lengthen more(not letting the valve close all the way) when heated requiring more lash, hopefully the shorter rods will work good. Maybe when you get it running and engine warmed up check the lash then. Its going to be ok👍
I’ll be taking it apart to investigate further. It appears to be more than valve lash.
Hopefully it'll end up being something minor. I have had some weird issues before with the compression release on some aftermarket cams. The compression release mechanism was a bit wider than stock and would rub on the side of the crankshaft counterweight. It caused weird starting issues, one time it would start fine the next it'd yank the rope out of your hand.
Yea it was doing that at first but stopped. Now I believe it’s a compression problem.
Maybe try a different carb?

Thats rough nothing worse than putting so much time and money into something and it not doing what it should! I got a bare 224 block and am starting from scratch on it! Hope u get it figured out!

Timing change? What was the cause of that?
@@DIYWilly 10 degree weather change would have to re jet and bump or retard timing
