    Just bought this recorder yesterday. It is the most incredible thing I have heard of. I was about to buy the F8n and then I heard a review were the guy regretted buying the F8n and if he could go back in time he would by this machine. I was like... "What? I went to learn more about it and I was blown away. No way, I have to get THAT!!"

    I film some local bands in clubs & some have only the vocals amplified.
    I am thinking of getting 4 Sennheiser 609 mic's so I can mic the guitar
    and bass amps and
    when needed a second guitar & harmonica amp. The drums usually are good enough as are.
    Since it will be a 1 man team in a set it & forget it situation can I run these mic'ed amps via XLR straight into the Zoom F6?
    I plan on tucking it next to the drum kit.

    Creative and amusing skit to showcase the dynamic range, most enjoyable. Thanks. The F6 looks like a true winner... I wonder (though I do understand this is not its main purpose) what sort of latency you might get if used as a computer audio interface for VIs/sample libraries in a DAW.

    Would you still need a mixer if you had the Zoom f6. I have the Sound Devices 302 but it’s need some repair ( possibly $300 worth of repair or less ) I’m undecided if I should repair the mixer or just use the Xoom F6. My current plan is to purchase the ZoomF6 and decide what to do with the mixer.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  5 лет назад

      You wouldn't necessarily need a mixer if the Zoom's complement of inputs, channels, and tracks are adequate for your projects and number of connected devices:
      6-input, 14-track
      Analog I/O:
      6 x XLR 3-Pin Female Balanced Line/Mic Input (Lockable)
      1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Line Output
      1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Headphone Output
      Digital I/O: 1 x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Timecode In/Out

    Have you ever taken a 1/4” feed(s) from a sound board? Since it only has XLR inputs instead of combo inputs like other devices, I’m curious if line level can be sent and received through a male 1/4” to male XLR from the sound board to the F6 input(s) or is a DI box required?

    • @BandH

    I am tempted to buy one but are their any benefits of the F6 over the Sound Devices MixPre6 (which I have) if the majority of the audio I capture is via Sennheiser g3 lavs? I.e. the biggest benefit I see with the F6 is the dual AD converters and the 32-bit float recording (great job bringing that tech to pro-consumer market Zoom), but when you use lavs the receiver has an ADC and limiter so that nullifies the benefits of the dual AD converters the F6 has, right? I.e. if the lav receiver clips or hits the limiter, your recording can be damaged and you're not going to get the benefit of the F6's AD converters that could have prevented that...

    thanks for this. can i use the zoom f6 or the mixpre-3 ii with the rode video mic pro + via the 3.5 jack? are there limitations to this quality wise compared to using a xlr shotgun mic? thanks so much for your thoughts.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  4 года назад

      Neither the Zoom F6 nor the Sound Devices MixPre-3 II offer a 3.5mm/1/8" microphone input for use with the Rode VideoMic Pro. An XLR shotgun mic offers a balanced audio input, phantom power (no battery),overall better sound reproduction and a lower noise floor. >Mark

    The one thing this device does not have is the Zoom Capsules Connector that attaches to a bunch of mics I have already bought.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  5 лет назад +2

      That's true, but it looks like Zoom was really focused on creating a standalone, dedicated recorder that can capture the best audio possible. The other thing is that the addition of the capsules would have added $ and weight, both of which may have turned some customers off.

    • @fk319fk
      @fk319fk 5 лет назад

      @@BandH They made their choice. I have an H6 and most of the Capsules. The F8 has the capsule attachment and I was ready to replace my H6 with the F6. At this time I will not be replacing it.
      To me, the advantage of using the Capsule is I have one box to bring and one stand. For what I do, I do not need ultra hi quality, but I do need some dynamic range. (I set and forget. I record a single performance that will have a band and later young singers. I use the 10db double recording to make sure I get both in good sound.)

    • @BandH
      @BandH  5 лет назад +1

      @@fk319fk That makes sense. Sometimes a piece of gear checks off lots of boxes but falls just short of a particular need, so sticking with your current setup sounds like a great plan. Plus, it sounds like you really know what you're doing, which, as you know, is 75% of the battle to getting great-sounding audio. Thanks for watching (and sharing).

    • @fk319fk
      @fk319fk 5 лет назад +1

      @@BandH Thanks. I learned a long time ago, fix a problem earliest in the pipeline where it will be the cheapest to fix. At first, I carried around a lot of gear to do this. Then I realized, sometimes it is not that expensive to wait till the next stage. In this case, I stopped carrying around my field mixer/recorder, wires, mics and power conditioner, and replaced all this with Gator case that has my h6 and most of my capsules. I like the F8, but not enough to replace my H6. The wide recording range on the F6 was enough to put it at the top of my next gear to buy.
      I am now going to wait to see if they move the new A/D in the F6 to the F8-A(?).

    I’ve purchased this recorder to swap it for the Zoom F4 that I’ve been using for the past year as I think it suits my needs better. However, the line output to my Sony a7III from the F6 sounds so much noisier than the sub-out from the F4 did. Plus, I seem to be picking up a lot of interference from my Sennheiser AVX Lapel receiver and weird noise from my shotgun’s cable moving. This is a complete none-issue with the F4. Does anyone else seems to be experiencing weird Line out issues like this? I’m trying to figure out if I have a defective unit or if the Zoom F6 has just a very poor output solution.
    If that’s the case, that makes me doubt the F6’s usability on the field given that my backup track, that is the one of the camera, is close to unusable quality-wise, as with the F4, the quality was close to the same as the internally recorded on.
    Any insight from other users would be greatly appreciated :).

    Drawbacks of the F6 include only single recording option and no real audio outputs. Too bad Zoom went for tiny size for DLSR users over function.
    For those sending audio to camera via XLR, there is no option let alone multiple cameras. For those needing to make WAVE files and MP3 files at the same time, also no option that I see.
    While the floating 32 bit option is a great option for those that can't monitor and ride levels, I'll stick with my SD 552/F4 combo to record WAVE & MP3 files, with the ability to send wireless feeds, break away cable and more to cameras.
    Another option is to use a SD552 for WAVE files (plenty on the used market) and Zoom F1 or other small device for the MP3 files when needed.
    Buy gear that fit your needs and the needs of your clients.
    Cheers, Scott
