Thank you. I’ve been using a rock climbing rubber donut for gripping exercising in my left hand, focusing on strengthening muscles and tendons in my pinky then ring finger in succession for muscle motor memory It has really helped because it is smaller than bigger plastic spring grips for hand strength exercises. And it’s easy to carry around with me in my pocket to exercise anywhere
Thanks for the tips it realy help me to understand tenouchi better, now i fell the diference in the end of the cut that "impact" like you hiting something. Send a hello for Brazil and keep the work. 💪😎👍
It’s very interesting but if you study judo or jiu jitsu, there are many thematic similarities to explain tenouchi. It is very similar to the kuzushi in judo or application of a north/south choke in jiu jitsu. Play the shamisen and you will lear to keep a loose wrist. Play the shakuhachi and you will learn to breathe and use your core. It’s all connected.
I think this has to be one of the coolest comments I’ve gotten lately. In college one of my professors used to say “everything related to everything” and the more experiences I have the more I see how everything is connected!
I'm a beginner - a couple of weeks ago I received this exact advice about a towel and was twisting my hands very hard. I did it so hard that I tore the skin around my thumb and it still hasn't fully healed. Luckily I sort of intuitively picked up that this wasn't right.
Awesome. Tenouchi is very important to keep developing your kendo that why I wanted to make a video hoping to clear up some of the confusion. Hope to keep making useful videos that could help you!
Tenouchi is more related to stopping the shinai. The biggest problem is swinging a shinai using too much muscle power. Exactly how much power does it take to lift something that weighs the same as an umbrella? How much effort does it take to lower it? Hold one above your head and drop it. It will probably drop faster than you can ever cut. The main thing is to hold a shinai like it's a baby. Close to hara it must be an extension of oneself. Above all the grip must be loose enough for the wrists to remain flexible to create that snapping action just like karate punch.
My kendo teacher told me this Think of your right hand as a guide and your left hand as the power. only put power on the right when firmly doing a men hit so it can do an explosive noise
I like to think of the right hand as a guide as well. I normally avoid saying to put power on the right hand because I’m my experience it can get misinterpreted. I think this concept has to be felt and it can be hard to explain some times.
@@Kendotips If you have trouble explaining to others just say “Think of the right hand as a pivot point and think of the left as the torque and power you will exert on”
how should i maintain tenouchi? i have really sweaty hands. i have been doing kendo for three years and its been working out fine, but just recently i found out that my sweaty hands have been blocking me from doing proper tenouchi
Have you tried some of the gloves that you can put underneath your kote? I use these for when I have a lot of very active practice because of sweat so you may benefit from this and make your kote last longer

I like the way you broke it down. I think the grip connection the the wrist is not mentioned enough. Thanks for sharing!
