Sorry if your wife felt uncomfortable...but it's a blessing in disguise....we believe that their acts (which the mask dancers are showcasing) makes one feel humility which can erase one's pride and give merit to oneself and as we know the 7 sins, pride is one of them....hope you had a wonderful tshechu experience and gained a lot of merit on the way...✌️✌️✌️

Atsaras are Dupthobs, enlightened beings who have realised the Samsaric truths. At this stage, they have risen above petty human emotions like shame, anger, desire, and likes. They do not live in want, and they do not covet.
Legend has it that Atsaras were among the Dupthob Gyabchu, the Buddha’s disciples. 84 Dupthobs, who had detached themselves from worldly desires and attachments, roamed the world, mocking worldly objects to overcome evil.
They dressed in colourful attires and had eccentric behaviour. Sometimes, they even used foul language in their quest to subdue evil in the minds of the mortals.
The Atsaras emanate these learned beings. Their vulgar forms send the message that they know no embarrassment, hesitation, or reservation. Source: daily bhutan

.This information might help us better understand "Atsara" before we form our own beliefs and potential misunderstandings about them. .The Atsara is a central figure in Bhutanese festivals, often seen as a comical, red-faced character wielding phalluses at tshechu events. Beyond mere entertainment, the Atsara embodies a blend of the sacred and the profane, using humor to challenge audiences' self-importance, hypocrisy, and false propriety. The name "Atsara" is derived from the Sanskrit term acārya, meaning teacher or scholar, and while it is unclear which Indian masters inspired the Atsara, some believe it may be a parody of Indian mahāsiddhas, including figures like Drukpa Kunley(Tibetan saint) who were renowned for their unconventional yet spiritually enlightened behavior.
The Atsara character embodies personality traits of openness, jocularity and spontaneity. As the festival ground is largely escapist, allowing those assembled to suspend their woes and worries, the Atsara reminds people to overcome unnecessary hang-ups and inhibitions, and open themselves more fully to the festival experience. His character is that of a liberated spirit, which has transcended the dualistic apprehension of likes and dislikes, pain and pleasure, and such other prejudices, biases and fixations. In an age when people are ever more susceptible to stress, the Atsara can be viewed as a teacher to help us let go of our mental and emotional constrictions and seek inner states of openness and ease.

In Bhutanese culture, the phallus symbol holds religious significance and is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck and fertility. The atsaras incorporate phallic symbols and gestures into their performances as a form of playful and irreverent behavior meant to entertain the audience and challenge social norms. This tradition is deeply rooted in Bhutanese folklore and is seen as a way to infuse humor and lightheartedness into the festival atmosphere. The atsaras' playful interactions with phallic symbols are not meant to be offensive but rather to celebrate cultural beliefs and traditions in a light-hearted and entertaining manner.

Atsaras play a vital role by providing comic relief and entertainment, helping to lighten the atmosphere during religious and cultural performances. They are often dressed in colorful, exaggerated costumes and masks, and their antics, jokes, and playful behavior engage the audience, making the festivals more enjoyable for all attendees. Despite their humorous role, atsaras also serve a deeper purpose by embodying the wisdom of folly, reminding people not to take life too seriously and to find joy and laughter in everyday moments.

Atsara defines a Devine madman and they are supposed to act naughty or they are trying to indicate the definition of divine madman. It might seem bit bothersome but if you try to bear it, there is nothing negative intentions from them. It is believed that it will perish the karma of shyfulness or shamefulness and be bold with your natural body I.e. phallus. Also enlightened beings doesn’t give much attention to being respectful or anything other modest behavior. They are pure raw confident spirits.

Just to give some input on the behaviour of the masked men, they are like court jester( atsara).. it's a Bhutanese belief that if you feel weird or embarrassed- it's a sign of getting rid of ur sins. More u feel weird or shy, the more blessings u receive and riddance of ur past sins.
Carrying phallus by those jesters are purposely done to make you feel embarrassed.

If you say it's your country's culture, then it's very disrespectful to do that to tourists who come from other countries. If you’re comfortable with your mother, sister being treated that way, then evaluate how your mother, sister, and daughter would feel about it. If she's not comfortable, then why is she being treated like a prostitute in the name of culture? That's disrespectful for tourists.

@@pemalhaden5183 yes it was a problem about a decade back and even the zhung dratshang had to interfere and reinforce the code and conduct of atsaras because some of the Atsaras were becoming too extreme, not just towards tourists but even towards locals. The main cause was due to some of the performers becoming too drunk behind the masks. The extreme acts started to become more personal instead of an act and it was making tourist experiences bad.
This is why you wont see atsaras being unnecessarily extreme in their performances in Paro and thimphu.
Their rules dont allow them to do whatever and however they want and they are to keep their performances within humour and breaking sexual barriers only and they can use the phallus in various ways. Also extra fun fact; traditionally only specific atsaras can ask for money offerings while Some are allowed to carry babies and take them around but I guess this is mixed uo and disregarded in some places due to no regulations.
