- Is Mexico City a fun destination for travel? I walk around a couple of neighborhoods (Roma and Condesa), chatting with locals and experiencing Mexico City like a "Chilongo." Explore the beautiful parks, city streets, and even watch us try a cocktail with a secret ingredient you'll never guess. Vamos a Mexico City.

Thanks!!
I'm planning a 2 week trip in May. Single female, 57, traveling alone. I'm having trouble narrowing down where to stay. Downtown? Roma? Condesa? Where would you feel safest walking home at night after dinner?
People hype up the danger of other places too much. Mexico is fine :)
Absolutely agree.
because if they don't hype them, they can't sell them
Exactly, there's no money in it for the media if their is no danger to scandalize the world with.
Dustin Heath No way there are way more dangerous places, so calling it the most must have been part of an opinion piece
Dustin Heath You need a big dose of chill. hahaha
Nice Job - I agree with you.
Mexico City is a hidden jewel to most people in the USA who are too afraid to leave home.
I look forward to returning to Mexico next week
I'm looking forward to getting back soon myself :)
Condesa neighborhood used to be a racecourse in the early XX century, that's why Amsterdam street goes around the zone because it was the actual race track. If you take a bird view of the neighbprhood you will see it clearly.
That makes perfect sense :) Thanks for letting me know.
That was a lunch break well spent! The B&B is amazing! I like how you give a few crazy facts at the beginning, we might adopt that idea for our videos. I wonder how much venom goes into the drink or how much they dilute it!? Crazy!
That Pozole looked great, I'm up for the next Barr Mexico Food tour! Slick edit bro, great intro. Nice to see the city rich in diversity and culture, some cool characters here.
Thanks man :) I did 2 other Mexico videos if you're bored, the last one I included some awesome enchiladas!
Here Be Barr nice one I'll check em out
I have seen many videos about Mexico made by people from the US, and they all really really want to stress how Mexico is safe and how there are so many bad stereotypes about Mexico. I think these stereotypes about the dangers of Mexico are only in the US, though. Here in Europe we don't think of Mexico as being so dangerous. Of course, we may believe in other stereotypes -- i.e., spicy food, dancing salsa all night long, big sombreros and loud people -- but danger is not on the top of our list. Personally, I have never associated "Mexico" to "danger" until I started listening to people from the US . Furthermore, we don't think of the US as being much safer than Mexico or other Latin American countries. I mean, if you ask to a European which city she thinks is more dangerous between Mexico City or Los Angeles, I am sure she will have a hard time deciding. In fact, here in Europe we have the idea that the US can be extremely dangerous, because we always hear of all these mass-shootings in schools or in public places and we have the idea that American cops first shoot at you and then ask your name - especially if you're black!
Thanks for the insightful post :) Great point you make. I think in the U.S.A the drug-war issues are reported so much because of the proximity to our border. The media reports on it all the time. We also have a large population of Mexicans living in the U.S.A, so even more reason it gets attention. I have heard that many Europeans have a negative stereotype about the U.S.A in regards to violence..and some of it is true, we have lots and lots of guns here.
Here Be Barr ... also, it's not just the number of guns you have, but the whole "American culture" surrounding guns. I mean, when I went to Texas, a man taught me how to use guns: he brought me to the woods to teach me how to shoot - and that was supposed to be a sort of "welcoming present", LOL! :-) PS: have you ever visited Italy? I am new to your channel, so I haven't watched all your videos yet...
I have visited Italy but that was pre-vlogging. The closest I have for you is a Malta vlog i made this summer (listed under travel vlogs on my channel page)! Thanks for subscribing.
you are right about the cops in the USA
I'm Mexican and I always travel back and forth from Mexico to the U.S. and I can tell you Mexico isn't unsafe. The U.S. media over-exaggerates what happens in Mexico for two reasons, I think: One is that people's attention in the U.S. (and also elsewhere) is always drawn towards sensationalist news, so that's what the media gives them. And 2 is that the U.S. probably wants to keep its people's money in the U.S., so they scare them about going to Mexico cuz Mexico is one of the major tourist destinations for U.S. people.
It's true that there are some areas of the country where it isn't safe. But those are just a few areas where the drug cartels are at war. But Mexico is a huge place and unsafe places represent just a very small percentage of the Mexican territory. There's other countries who have similar problems than Mexico, for example Italy where they have strong mafias too, but I think we all agree that Italy is a nice country to visit and it isn't unsafe for the most part. It's the same in Mexico.
"Eva María se fue..." Top tune, man.
Gracias a ti!
Sweet airbnb! Definitely looks like a place I'd enjoy staying. I enjoyed checking out these hipster neighbourhoods, and hearing from locals - Mexico City looks like a pretty cool place to visit.
Damn that Pozole looks delicious
Cool cocktails at the end too! Ahh, great guide, covered a lot in this video :)
Thanks. I'd need 7 vlogs to cover Mexico City, the place is to damn HUGE.
That's some really cool street art - I love that stuff so much!!!
:)
good video I miss mexico I live in USA for long time watching you video meke me feel close my country
Gracias
your spanish is amazing
Gracias!
Tarantula venom?!!! I don't think I could do it man. lol It's my understanding la Roma and Condesa neighborhoods are some hot spots and looks really nice there. Plenty of history and great food in MEX, definitely a fun travel destination IMO. Great vlog!
Thanks Marlon, yeah it's worth trying at least once.
I didn't think it would be that green and I love that artwork! I also think it's cool how you include the prices for stuff and I had no idea a tarantula venom cocktail even exists :O
Ha ha thanks. Yes, Mexico City was quite the surprise.
the retro room is pretty dope! the neighborhood with all the street art is cool, like you said, it doesn't feel like mexico! didn't know you speak spanish! i took 4 years in high school and forgot everything. Did you travel with those people or you met up with them there? tarantula venom is crazy.
I have been studying for 2.5 years and i'm far from fluent but I get by.. Actually, I met almost all of these people randomly, except for the girl from couchsurfing and my evil twin at the end. I didn't plan this episode to much. My new style, lol. Less format, more random.
Can I please stay at the AirBNB after you leave?! So cool! Street art hunting is my favorite activity! Didn't expect to see any of this in Mexico but I love it!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Tarantula venom mate that is one crazy drink and I loved the artwork on the buildings hope the apartment doesn't sink underneath you. Love the video and I remember the 70s
Thanks Mick. It was quite an experience.
siempre son bienvenidos todos los turistas extranjeros a México 🇲🇽 🇲🇽🇲🇽
aaah man, this video was awesome!!! Just woke up and watched this, it was the perfect way to start the day.I used to live in Mexico city in Colonia doctores and was hanging out around la roma almost every single day. This brought back so many good memories!! :) And yeah your Spanish is on point!Keep up the good work mate.I really enjoy watching your videos!
Thanks :) One of you two used to live in San Luis Potosi right (or visited). I'm heading there tomorrow to see my girlfriend, that's the next vlog as well. I'll be there for 10 days.
Glad to bring back some memories, and I need to catch up on your videos to if i've missed any.
Yes I lived in San-Luis Potosi ( the city) for a few years!? Is that where your girlfriend is from? I absolutely love that city!I used to live on a corner of plaza fundadores in the city center :)
Yep. It will be my first time visiting her and her family there. Wow, okay. If you think of any cool suggestions, shoot me a FB message!
Im thinking of heading out to Mexico city soon... Its a good weekend trip from California... I liked the folklore luchador in the beginning.
Your spanish is so good btw... You even used some slang! Im impressed! =)
Ive never been to Mexico City, but my mother is Mexican (from Yucatan)... I hear a lot of mixed reviews of Mexico city... people tell me its either really unsafe or safe and amazing... what did you think? in your experience?
OMG that tarantula drink sounds intense... do you recommend it? Ill have to try it out when im there... since i like creepy stuff like that.
Thanks for watching.. Ha ha ( I made up that Luchador thing, I wanted to see how many people would believe it).
My opinion: safe and amazing.. I really have felt far more unsafe in many other places. My spanish is intermediate, I think I highlighted a few nice moments where I sounded more fluent than I was.
Yes, try the drink. Heck put it in your vlog if you want, they love the attention. The manager was so nice to me.
Here Be Barr ok cool! Thanks! Its all still a thought process but hopefully soon Ill make it over there...
I love folklore and such... fake or not LOL...
Wooow! Mexico city is gorgeous! Yeah that tip about the change is pretty good! It can work for pretty much all latin america!
Yes, I was thinking of that tip today actually in another part of Mexico . I hope you two are well :)
Mexico sounds fun! your vlog has covered every "fun" bit of it...Thumbs up!
Thanks!
I Love Your Video, Man. Mexico City Is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Muchos Saludos Amigo, Siempre Seras Bienvenido A México!!!
Muchas gracias Uziel!!
Awesome vlog man and definitely very cool city and culture, love it! I'll definitely be putting this on my bucket list of places to vacation to 😎👍
Thanks David, I'm definitely returning there myself.
Looks nice and not scary! I've always wanted to visit Mexico but everyone tells me it's too dangerous to travel there. Great to see that's probably not the case if you travel to right areas.
Lotta/Lanttimatkat
Absolutely safe if you know where to go.
Lanttimatkat Lanttimatkat people and the media always like to brainwash people to think Mexico has some thief or murderer down every corner which is completely ignorant and frankly, pretty offensive. We don't base the U.S. off of rough neighborhoods in Detroit or mass shootings and say the U.S. is soooo dangerous. So we shouldn't base Mexico off of cartels in border towns. Every country has rough areas. You'd have a better chance getting murdered in Compton vs. Polanco.
Americans have bought into the media ;ike sheep, they will go to detroit chciago new orleans but nor Mexico? lol
I live in the US and so many racist agendas here, also many other latinos who are jealous of Mexico say those things to like puerto ricans and argentenians
You can bet any mayor USA city is more dangerous than Mexico. Beginning by the fact that we don't consume drugs as much as USA. Not by far.
Dustin Heath my mom is actually from Juarez, visited when I was 14. My grandmother visits frequently. I wouldn't want to go again. It's rough but just as Chicago can be rough. The most dangerous city in Mexico is Acapulco so I'm not sure where you're getting these stats from. Baltimore, Detroit and Chicago are on the most dangerous cities in the world list but we don't say The United States as a whole is a murder infested country.
Mexicans are American.
indeed
I agree with you guys. However, my audience is "American" or living in the U.S.A and by the definition here that's the easiest way to categorize it. I know the word "Estado Unidense" in Spanish and we don't have it in the United States. It would make more sense if we called ourselves "Staters", but they took the "America" part out of United States of, to make the long held nickname. I wish their was a better word, because I do agree that Mexicans are sure as heck American. So Mexico City is fun for Estado Unidenses and Americans (of all types).
Well, America is the name of the continent, so everyone who is born here is an American. You were born in China, you're an Asian, in Congo, you're an African, in any country in America, congratulations, you're an American.
Oh, I didn't know this information. So, what's the name of the continent where the United States of America are located? I mean it, I'm curious to find out.
So, people who are born in North America are North Americans? What about those who were born in Tijuana? It is farther to the north than Miami, Houston, Austin, New Orleans and many other cities in the USA. Are they North Americans, too?
you should try the pozole at "La casa de Toño" best pozole in the whole city.
Thanks. I'll try to remember it when I come back again.
irish guy from Westlife in mexico city
Thank yo for the very informative video, agree with you in everything you said, although I would not try the mezcal drink with Tarantula venom, other than that Mexico City is beautiful and interesting. Is worth to visit it and enjoy. Nightlife is great! and also I can tell you speak good Spanish too. Food in Mexico City is amazing. Thanks again and you've got a new subscriber. Gracias de Nuevo por video interesante y padre. Looking forward to watch more
Gracias mi nuevo amigo. I am back in Mexico City for 6 weeks and have a playlist, with tons of new episodes if you're curious! It's on my main page.
Here Be Barr Thank you, looking forward to watch all your México City playlist. The city has pretty unique, interesting neighborhoods. Gracias a ti amigo
si dejas que México te robe el corazón , jamas podrás olvidarlo.
damn that tarantula vennom i guess what doesnt kill you makes you stronger cheers
I'm returning to CDMX next month for 6 weeks, and I am going to try this stuff again with my girlfriend, hahaa. It's not that bad.
Excellent video! Truly shows my country.
Appreciate your kind remarks
Thank you very much, you have a great country.
excellent video man you're very informative and cool.
I appreciate it.
Loved this video. Also loving the new format you're trying. Longer video but more topics probably means I'll want to watch it more. Also, something that isn't the US.
Are there gonna be more Mexico City videos coming?
Also, why do they add the tarantula venom? Is it just for the novelty or have they done this historically for the feeling?
Janek,
Nice to hear from you again and thanks. I'm leaving Mexico City and heading for San Luis a more traditional city after, so i'll be doing videos from there.
I think the venom and their other drinks (they had some random stuff) was more for the novelty.
Nice to hear about San Luis.
Do you remember any of the other random stuff in drinks?
Nothing as crazy as tarantula venom. I was kind of struggling to down a vodka mixed with some cinnamon pieces. There was also coffee and some other liquors involved.
Great video. How do you think someone that can speak no Spanish would do? Do many folks speak english?
English isn't THAT widely spoken. But.. if you want to take tours, their are english speaking guides. And you can even Uber all over the city (which is what I did). I'm not going to lie, knowing some basic Spanish would help a lot. But I'd brush up and consider it an adventure to improve while there. I think you'd get by just fine.
Hey there! This is my first time watching a video of yours. I'm from northern Mexico but went to Mexico City to study design last semester. I was surprised to see the apartment you stayed at because it is just right next to my best friend's. I was glad I recognized it.
Thanks. I'm actually returning to Mexico City for 6 weeks in March/April and will be making plenty of vlogs from there again :)
Woah! That's exciting... I loved being there and just looking at that street again made me so happy and brought memories. Thanks for answering!
Greta video, thanks!
de nada
You better prevent those evil spirits entering your house... :D We were actually thinking about doing Mexico City instead of New Zealand, but we decided against it... :D So we missed out on the pastries I guess...
Ha ha well you traded cheap living for the beauty of NZ.. So it's a tough call , jajajaj.. You can always visit Mexico City another time ;)
Yes, I guess we can :)
That toilet is very artsy. Diego speaks better English than I do. You did not just say she looks like a skeleton?!
Hahha, Diego is famous now.
That Air BnB is the bomb!!! How much did it cost? The area looks more up my alley with street art and alternative vibe
It was $90 a night for 2 Bed room. I linked it on the description if you ever go.
+Here Be Barr thanks! PS your Spanish is awesome!
i'm convinced that I have to go to Mexico 👌
Very nice Video, i like the way you describe your experience in those spots!
Gracias :)
I loved Mexico City. Your money goes a long way. And the architecture is interesting
Pozole is one of the must nutritious soups in the world.
is great in the winter
Yes, I imagine it tastes even better when it is a little colder out.
What camera do you use man?
Canon G7X Mark II
Great Video. Thank you for posting.
Thanks.
"tons of cafes... deco thing going on... I really don't feel like I`m in Mexico City"... Typical American that, just like George W. Bush, thinks civilisation and fine things were invented in the US! They just can't help it. Mexico has a lot of problems, but a strong national, cultural and artistic identity that makes it a unique place on Earth. When there was only buffaloes in Manhattan first university of the continent was already stablished in Mexico City... By the way, Mexico City and other Mexican places have lower homicide and criminality rates than many places in the US. Other than that, nice video...
I was only talking about the perception of Mexico City here. But yes, I agree that many Americans compare other places to our cities. I was actually more comparing it to a European place, which it actually was loosely based on in Condesa (the art deco). I wouldn't consider myself a "typical" American. In fact, that kind of view point is a typical "Non-American" thinking all Americans are the same and like George Bush. I really enjoyed Mexico City and Mexico a lot, it's one of my favorite countries. I also agree that the view that crime in Mexico is widespread is falsified by the media and I did address it.
Thumbs up :)
Gracias!
Here Be Barr
De nada ;)
Great video!
Thanks!
Hi Im from México city
hola
Hi, Hope you like my city "Beautiful Mexico City"😍 What you said about the oldest theater in Mexico city... was not correct... the oldest theater in Mexico city is the Teatro de la Ciudad" built in 1865 ...you should mention it o the Beautiful "Palacio de Bellas Artes" ( Theater, Museum, and Opera house) and mention a old adult theater... because Mexico City has so much Art, and Culture.
Bro, I am beginning to think you love airbnb haha... naw great video. I need to plan a Mexico City trip
What can I say, I think apartments > hotels, i'm hooked.
Wow, I had no idea Mexico City was sinking. Why is that? And that is one groovily decorated apartment, too. A++ for Diego's English too! And sorry lol but I don't think anything could convince me to try that cocktail, not even the fact that it has the same name as a Harry Potter character. :D
Also, this is me watching your video: "Oh look at all that street art, and this is a nice pa- OMG DID YOU SAY DOG SCHOOL????"
Hahahah.. Come on it was a good cocktail :)
And i don't remember the exact reason why it was sinking.. i just remember not being able to level my camera.
Here Be Barr I might look up the reason! I'm intrigued now. :)
It's been sinking for hundreds of years. Before the Aztecs, the area was a marsh with swamps and lagoons. They filled the area with dirt, but since there was a lot of water under the dirt, the city just keept sinking. It sinks very slowly, but after centuries of it, it's evident everywhere.
My first video and I think I already love you!
Gracias.
great video! Your spanish is good man, I need to learn to speak it haha, I only know a few words and phrases smh
Ha ha thanks. I just made a video on my channel about how I learned Spanish, check it out.
Would you recommend that I take pesos with me? Or should I pay for things with US dollar and credit card?
Your spanish is good.
Gracias
please come to "zona conurbada" in Mexico State we have some cool places for you
I'll remember that.
Can you get around with speaking English? only know a few saying in spanish.
I would say if you knew a few survival phrases then yes. I'd concentrate on ordering at restaurants, etc. Uber you don't really have to communicate much.
Now 22 pesos per Dolar, so some to Mexico en enjoy!!
Where do I get one of those funny looking luchadores? I had never seen one of those before.
No idea, it came with the Airbnb, jajaja.
La leyenda del luchador fue buen chiste.
Which walking tour did you do? Can you link it?

You were visiting the nicest places in the city. I love so much my city, but roma, condesa and the zones around dont have the real scense of México city. Thats bot real México. You had to visit a traditional market, to some beer in tradicional taberns in downtown.
stop calling ur self American please...
