As a licensed plumber for over 15yrs. I hate when ppl use silicone to seal the drain to the sink. It's a pain to get off and a mess to clean. Don't do it. Plumbers putty works perfectly if you know what you're doing
licensed plumber over 20 years Master Plumber for last 7 years putty and pipe dope always works
Licensed plumber for 5 years, any sealant on top os useless on any drain with overflow holes, the only thing stopping a leak is the rubber gasket
I agree
@@ProvidenceAcresFarm
Sealant on top is to help the sink be able to fill up and hold water, not to prevent leaking into the vanity.
@@merlinious01 Here in Euroe we just have a rubber gasket instead of the sealant, works without leaking.
You forgot the standing water test. Fill sink up a ways and leave water standing in it for about 5 minutes to be sure your seal is good at the drain. Also, Lexel is not the right sealant for the drain. Use putty or use caulking specific for plumbing that is antimicrobial and wont mold.
Always think about the next guy having to take that damn drain off. Putty works fine. In the event that someone wants to change the trim color of the entire bathroom, then you're kinda screwed at that point by limiting options. Pipe dope works fine for the threads.
Lexel is more of a sealant then an adhesive. It’s basically a clear gasket maker that will peel off similarly to silicone
@@UsedNapkin458Silicone is easy to peel off?
Yep
@seanoneil2110 off porcelain... yes, yes it is.
@@paulmacdonald7068 Silicone is a pain in tha ass to remove from porcelain. Plumber's putty is still the best option here.
Tip one should be install angle stops before you get to this point
ONLY Putty
do not silicone strainers or you will have a very hard time removing it if replacement ever is needed…
Plumbers putty is $2 with a lid, you can use it dozens of times. Lexel $12 no lid.
Lexel is permanent, probably the worst thing to use on any part that may be changed....EVER! Use putty, because it the right product for the job.
How often is the pop up changed?
@HomeRepairTutor it may not be often, but do you want a 5 minute job to take 30?
@@HomeRepairTutor This is exactly what the worst craftsmen think. It will be changed someday, and you ruined the next guy's day. Plumber's putty is great here, there's no need to try hacking in some other crap that wasn't designed for the application.
@@HomeRepairTutor I have a new home *five years old* Had to change three of them because the wife didn't like it. before that had puddy on a sink I installed for 10 years. not a drop came from that sink seal.
@@themonkeydrunkenRuined his day? Lol, dont you own a pair of pump pliers? Time to toughen up dude
You should fill and dump the sink. Just saying
Tip #5 put stops on first…
Tip #6 when you replace the rotten pop up … you’ll replace under mount sink to…
Putty always putty…
Tip # 7 if you tape it ,dope it too 🤷🏻♂️
Tip number 1.....install your angle stops before the drain and P-trap.
you also need to add the sealer to the pipe at the bottom of the sink where rubber ring gets tight. Otherwise, the join will leak.
Use plumbers putty--it works fine. Also, you need to fill the sink completely full and then open the drain to test for leaks.
No, always use putty.
If I'm doing private work for my own customers then I put silicone to seal it but if I'm at my day job where we're doing work in social housing, I use non setting putty so it's easier for the next guy. And for testing the trap, I run the water for a minute and then fill the whole bowl and let that drain so there's pressure there
Use plumbers putty don’t listen to this RUclips wanna be Plumber but your not..
Always shut drain and fill sink as well to see if it leaks thru then release
The proper way to test your connections is to fill and drain the bowl a couple of times. This puts pressure on those joints and will expose a leak. Just running water won't unless you have a really bad leak.
You should use pipe dope on the rubber washer that pushes against the bottom of the sink and the threads on the tail piece.
Question: If, say in 5 years, the homeowner wants to change the drain and hardware, will the Lexel release or is the drain now a permanent part of the sink?
It will come loose. It won't be super easy but it's much like silicone.
Indeed, no need to run water for five to ten minutes. Fill the sink 2-3 times and dump. I also dope the trap arm where it connects to the ptrap
@@nathanheim248 Silicone is a pain in tha ass to remove from porcelain. Plumber's putty is still the best option here.
Dont just run water, plug the sink and fill it up so you can check all the joints then drain and run water.
Why the compression fittings and not hard pipe it?
Never use anything but putty.
A proper water eat test is a full pressure test b filling the fixture with water that also test overflow. If it doesn’t leak with that test, it’s good to go. Thank you for the caulk selection I’m going to try it since I’m old school and still use plumber putty
I love these videos just to read the contradicting comments that all you “contractors” leave.
Two questions. One, are you sponsored by Lexel? And two, why Lexel instead of putty? Most plumbers swear by putty
Putty is fine. Seems less messy than that crap.
No, I’m not sponsored or paid by Lexel. Lexel is a sealant and stronger than putty, which means less of a chance for leaks
@@HomeRepairTutor Lexel is fine, but it is on the expensive side of silicone adhesives. It is definitely easier/faster to use silicone adhesive than putty for putting pop up assemblies in, but in my opinion it is sort of a waste of money to use/recommend lexel rather than a less costly 100% silicone alternative. Putty is also fine. In almost any scenario with proper installation, an installer will be able to use either putty or silicone/lexel successfully.
@@HomeRepairTutoryou do know that the bottom gasket keeps the water from leaking you don’t even need lexel or putty tape keep it from leaking But the sink want hold water But it want leak. Just saying but I always use putty never had a problem with the sink not holding water do to putty
@@MarlinRothhow is that shit faster? Putty is was faster than that goopy bullshit. That shit is harder to clean, you need a caulk gun, it’s way more expensive than putty. It’s way faster, cheaper, better, to use putty. I would only use the silicon shit if it’s an oddball sink that won’t fit anything perfectly.
What’s that vent doing?
Traps should have enough extension to reach the pipe, and the pipe should be over instead of inside. (Would you install roof sheets over or under against rain?) And 45 revolution lol😂
What's lexol? Why not using silicone?
notice he didn't angle stop and test anything.
Good vid. Please don’t ever use lexel for plumbing.
Plumbers putty been working since they made sinks
I also run hot then cold to test for leaks
Don’t do this way please! Use plumbing putty .
why
@@bluearcherx This crap bonds in a way that is a pain in the ass to remove later. If you have to clean out or replace the popup, you'll be very glad if the last guy knew what he was doing and used putty. Putty makes a perfect seal and lasts pretty much forever; there's no need to hack in other stuff that wasn't designed for the application.
@@themonkeydrunken correct 👍
I keep using the putty and it keeps leaking. I’m gonna try that silicone he’s using.
connect the stops first then run water through it
Use plumbers putty instead of Lexel or caulk. It's supposed to be easy to remove if you need to remove the drain. It will be a lot harder to get a water tight seal the next time the drain is removed.
5-10 minutes, unless you are pushing a fire hose down the drain with the amount of water the faucet puts out you would see a leak in under a minute.
Better tip would be fill the sink several times and look for leaks when you drain it.
This is a simple job I have done it and I’m not a plumber, having said i know my limitations and will hire licensed pros when needed
My Plumber has never cared to run lines for 5 to 10 minutes as much as its been a full pressure test ( filling sink full and drain for max pressure) at least 3 times
Only use Lexel if you want to glue the drain to the sink and screw the next guy. Otherwise plumbers putty works just fine.
If you'd use plumber's putty you could have immediately turn the water on but no you got to wait 24 hours to check for leaks because of your silicone.
Use putty around drain and little pipe dope on beveled rubber gasket and have no issues ever
A rubber gasket of any kind doesn't require anything else. It is a seal. Gasket means seal. If it's a petroleum-based based dope, it will damage the rubber. Never use any type of oil or grease with any type of rubber, plastic or silicone. It's the same rules as condoms.
Never force a fitting, everything should freely go into place, so cut two or three times if need be, it doesn't take much to not get a good leakproof seal
Handy Mandy special right here guys license exists for a reason
How have I've never seen this before but the like has already been selected?
I like to run hot water for about a minute then tighten the fittings again
Megatape…. Is that like a Megapint? Bahahaha.
Tip number whatever rough-in drain where it belongs along with the water lines when you test a sink fill it to the overflow if it has one nowadays let it sit and let her rip tater chip
You just listed 3 products I am going to buy and never use ty sir 👏👍👍jk gonna use the crap out of em 🥳
That rubber gasket is barely touching the bottom of the sink.
No no no no. Always use putty. People that aren’t plumbers say to use silicone. Use putty.
Please don't use level. Please use plumbers putty
Pretty sure the only real tip in the video was to use a slip extension if the P-trap sits below the Drain outlet on the sink. It was also not referred to as a tip.
why not putty? putty should be good right?
it's fine, but lexel is better. some drain manufacturers are stating not to use putty at all (silicone or other sealant instead) so read the directions
Putty is the best option by far, and it's easy to service. This crap is a pain in the ass to remove, even from porcelain. This guy's a hack.
puddy's good, it's just marketing to get you to switch.
Please don't use Lexel on any sinks i might have to work on.. thanks in advance!!
Please do not use Lexol to seal a drain
Do not use……if you are a plumber ya know thats a big No.. No
You have confused tips with instructions.
Wrong u should run hot water to soften the washers and nuts then tighten again and then hit with cold to lock them there’s a tip for u
That's a real tip. This guy's a wine sipping dork.
If you’ve applied silicone how are you water testing without ruining what you’ve just applied?! Putty is the way.
10.5 oz. lexel @$24.95
14 oz. plumbers putty @$4.48
^^^I'll come back to this
the fact that it "works better" over "works when properly installed" does not upsale your skill level. The disregard for the case of beer you dumped down the drain *intended*.....Welp, get out!! yet another situation your caulks inability to impress ends a relationship!!!
Rookie. Silicone??? True test is to fill the sink up and then let the water down
Why put a p tip? It's not even a toilet?
Plumbers putty on the drain and dope the threads on the metal tailpiece.
I blame you for every silicone hackjob I have encountered in my career.
I hope everyone who watches this video just decides to call a plumber.
Well first of all, it’s not silicone, Lexel is an adhesive. Second, that’s a bit extreme. I don’t control how people did things in the past and certainly cannot be accountable for their actions. If you want to play the victim or blame someone for somebody’s actions, I’d reconsider your decision making process
Зачем мажешь горловину в раковине силиконом 👀 Так не делается!!!
It doesnt make any sense to put any type of sealant on the top of the drain. The overflow holes on the drain will make the water pass through down to the rubber stopper anyways....its useless. For real...all you plumbers should know that

Surprised to see a lower metal drain pipe extension inside of a higher metal drain pipe. The top pipe should fit into the lower pipe. No leaks.
some brands do it that way but it's fine
Almost every brand I have installed comes standard this way. Us plumbers just add a little pipe door to the threads to guarantee seal
Didn't help me at all because I have a glass sink without the gap most sink drains have as standard.
What's lexal paying you? Putty all the way. 100%. Nothing sucks more than replacing a siliconed drain.
Please use putty on the drain and you should also use pipe dope on your gasket.
Why would you use dope on the rubber gasket?
Why would you use dope on the rubber gasket?
It will leak sometimes. Just a precaution.
Plumbers putty works better
I am sick and tired of seeing sinks toilets and regulators the most easiest jobs ever I want to see you guys cutting cast iron commercial worl
Surprised you didn't have a laser set up
Putty is perfect. Lexel doesn't belong here.
You ever hear the old expression if it ain't broke don't fix it plumbers putty cost $2 and I can use the whole thing your lexol cost $10 and then you can throw the rest away
That’s not true, the Lexel cures in the tip and seals the tube. Yet, I can easily remove the cured part and continue using the sealant. I just did this yesterday on a tube that was over a month old
No freaking way.
No wonder my shit leaks constantly with any amount of back pressure
Not in my state!!!!!!!!!@
Way to much tape!!!
Don’t use silicone pls…
Ran to the comments to see all the crying about silicone type sealants.
Lol yep, and the funny thing is Lexel is better than silicone
Rip whoever what’s to change that stop
Do it all the time. Maybe you should head to the gym, Lol
This is not how it's done. Do not use this method. !!!
Tell me your not a plumver without telling me your not a plumber.....
First, learn the difference between you’re and your, second, this works well and is an alternative to putty
Putty is safe. LEXel is Toxic.
Please provide reputable references

@@peterparker9286 that warning is on practically everything, and this isn’t part of the potable/drinking water. Btw, all dimensional lumber that’s used to build homes has a similar warning, not to mention most products
Do you drink out of the sink trap?
One word putty😅 everything else was clean A for effort
Elastic mastic 2 pigs in a trap kid.
Only a savage uses silicone
fool
Nooooo. Use a rubber ring. No need for any sealant or putty: They will both make a mess of the job
The rubber rings rarely work. We atill end up having to putty up
The rubber sucks cuz the drain holes on sinks are never perfectly flat/round/angled. Quality control sucks nowadays
This pop up doesn’t come with a rubber gasket, hence the Lexel
@@HomeRepairTutor Stop with the lexel nonsense. Use putty! Once you are done, run HOT water through the sink for a few minutes then do a final hand tightening to all the nuts on the plastic waste fittings. Hot water softens and expands everything, and allows you to thoroughly tighten everything and eliminate leaks.
@@HomeRepairTutor Hence the need for putty, not Lexel. Geez man call a real plumber
I think he’s messing with us to get us to comment 😂
No no no no do nut use silicone on a drain do it the right way or don't do it. They give you everything you need so it doesn't leak .15 minute job
Plumbers putty works just fine, please don’t use lexal Jesus Christ.
This is not a plumber, do not do this.
