To this day, Yentl is among my favorite movies of all time. It's one of those films that you get obsessed with in your youth because it speaks to something inside you. And then you feel like it had a profound impact on your life when you get older. At least, that's how it feels to me. Thank you, Miss Streisand.

Yentl had to dress like a man for them to get married. It all made sense in my memory. ...Imagine my surprise when I actually watched it after years XD How could I forget Mandy Patinkin???
This was a movie that I watched as I was starting to come out. And I so wanted them to fall in love and be happy together. I was heartbroken when she chose Avigdor, but I was happy that she would be able to study. It remains one of my favorite movies of all time, due in part to the amazing soundtrack and voice of Barbra Streisand. Just gorgeous.

Fell in love with this movie long ago, partly for the male-and-female love story and also partly for Yentl's wanting so much to be a scholar and to follow in her father's footsteps and make good use of everything he had ever taught her. 📖 She is also following in her father's footsteps by teaching Hadass. The men in her life are pretty important to her and Hadass was I think basically just part of the background, but at the same time I also think that she very genuinely wanted to be good to Hadass while she could and while she had the chance. She could not actually be a husband to Hadass, not even really a wife either, but she could be a teacher and friend. She gives her what she can, to the best of her ability under the circumstances. Hadass is basically crushing on the nonexistent man that she thinks Yentl is. There is no such person as who or what Hadass thinks she has married, and Hadass literally never even found out that Yentl was a woman, at all, and if she *had* actually known, then she probably wouldn't have become a lesbian, she probably would have just become pretty thoroughly confused by the situation. 🤔 (Sorry to burst your bubbles, girls, but this movie isn't exactly about a relationship between the two women. Even Yentl herself says that "it was not a marriage" and she means *because* it was between two women. Hollywood did change the story somewhat and the defining lines are a bit less clear in the book/story, but *in the movie* I don't think it's intended that there ever exactly was a relationship for them or between them, more like just a friendship and that's all. In the movie, Yentl is basically horrified at the idea of a woman marrying a woman, partly because it goes so far against Jewish law and Jewish tradition. Learning to read, studying, going to the yeshiva [school] and dressing as a man were all forbidden too, but she sees *those* things in a different way. More like against a different kind of law which is also Jewish law but obviously taken less extremely seriously by her.)

This is done partly so that she could have her freedom, to do whatever she wanted, and partly so that Hadass and Avigdor would both not be alone. This was the rewritten ending for the movie (slightly different from the book/story, which doesn't include anyone going to America, although I think that Avigdor and Hadass do end up together in both). If I had rewritten it, then I think we would probably have Avigdor and Yentl running away to America together, and Hadass falling in love with someone else. 🤔 (But maybe that's just me. 🤔)
3:40 is perfect. The rising action of the movie is superb and that song just nails the moment. Just saw this on TCM the other day. Recorded and saw it twice. I'm going to buy it to. Such a good movie. Tomorrow Night!

I enjoyed Yentl quite a bit - and the soundtrack is spectacular - but I think Streisand made a critical mistake in wearing a wig rather than cutting her hair, which had the effect of making her seem more feminine than was necessary. As committed as she was to getting this film made, attentive as she is to details, and given all the other sacrifices she made for her labor of love, cutting off her hair seems like it would have been a relatively small price to pay for considerably more realism.

I remember reading the short story but it was a long time ago... I think in the story Yentl marries the girl, who is at first in love with the man (forgot his name). But their parents don't want her to marry him because his brother is in jail (or something else but morally wrong). So Hadass marries Yentl. Hadass knows she's a girl and under their marriage Hadass can be with the man. Yentl keeps seeing him since he'd have to see Hadass through her, he keeps Hadass, Hadass keeps him. It's a perfect arrangement (because Yentl also loves him and Hadass in the end.) I could be wrong but that's how I recall the story
