    Great photos! As always. I love my Rollei 35. I agree, it's surprising what great photos little guy can produce.

      A very different approach from what I was used to. Not to be able to manually focus is quite confusing at the beginning but then you get more and more confident and start enjoying it :) Thank you

    Beautiful photos with a lovely camera. I have the rollei35 thats made in Singapore. You are right as there isn't any metering and you have to estimate but true that its small and works like a tank. Great treasure to hand down to future generations

      Thank You Frank ! Yes, actually this is the first time I've experimented zone focusing, I am not ready to try shooting a portrait at f/2.8 for example ;)

  • @Smaug1
    @Smaug1 5 лет назад +1

    Whoa, you got the fancy f/2.8 Sonnar model! I had one of those too. Now, I have the regular f/3.5 Tessar. Going to get the f/3.5 Triotar in the B35 model, so I can have the batteryless selenium light meter. I never use shutter speeds below 1/30 sec. on this camera anyway; I may as well have the cleaner design. ;)
    Pic @ 18:30 is great. The flare worked out perfectly.
    As for the design, check out the Wikipedia page on the Rollei 35. It has an interesting history! The designer quit his job for developing the camera on his own initiative using company resources. He had to find another company to build it. Then, it turned out to be one of the most popular compact camera designs of the 60s and 70s.
    As for your light meter, I guess you used a separate one? Yes, not convenient.
    I have a Rollei 35 with working light meter, but the one I want is the budget model, the B35, with the selenium light meter that doesn't need a battery. Its front is also cleaner, due to not having the knobs on the front leather grip area.
    Do you have a negative scanner, or did you scan prints.
    Thanks for sharing and putting the time into this video.

    Some really good images. The Rollei 35 is a tough camera to use in a hurry, especially in low light with wide apertures. I know from experience.

    HI, VANDAN Im looking to purchase a Rollei 35s.. My question to you is do you like the Rollei 35s ?
    Have you tried ilford pan f film with the Rollei??

    • @VanDan
      @VanDan  7 лет назад +3

      I won't recommand this camera as a first one, it requires a bit of practice. To be honest, it's by far one of the most camera I've tried so far.
      On the other side, I alway take a lot of pleasure to use it, it's challenging not to be able to focus with your eyes but by guessing the distance.
      I won't recommand shooting with a slow film, since you have to choose a small aperture in other to maximize your chances to get your subject in focus, I would rather use a faster film. But saying that it depends on the type of pictures you want, with a tripod it shoud be ok or if you like long exposure shots.
      And of course it's just a personal opinion :)

    • @CymbalsOnly
      @CymbalsOnly 5 лет назад

      I've used pan f with mine when I had it. This camera is somewhat of a challenge to use. Nothing is really helping you out. You can zone focus in strong light easily (unlike the pics in this video show), but as the light gets dimmer, and you start opening up the aperture, your ability to judge distances becomes more important. I would recommend using a small rangefinder if you want to use larger apertures, at closer distances in dimmer light..but carrying a rangefinder, or a tripod, more of less negates the whole point of this camera, which is its small size. It all depends on your subject, and technique as well. I would have expected better images with 400 on a sunny day, so pan f in this instance may have been a disaster. Your actual results may vary, although it is entirely possible to get good results. It depends how much you want to torture yourself. There are far better cameras.

    help help is this a good camera for a newbie

    • @VanDan
      @VanDan  2 года назад

      I would not recommend this particular camera if you begin in photography. As a newbie, you should start with a SLR (for instance Canon A-1, Nikon FE2 or any other brand, there are plenty choices in the market for good price). It really depends if you need an automation (aperture priority/shutter speed priority/auto mode) or if you want to stick if a fully manual camera and do your own settings. I like aperture priority cameras but if I have to choose I would choose a fully mechanical one (like the Nikon FM2). Hope it will help you to choose yours. Cheers

      Thanks Huh, It's a Mobius Cam v2 but I don't recommand it, the battery is very disappointing.
      (If you look closely, you will notice a cable at 10:08 actually I was obliged to plug an external battery to constantly load it in order to record my shots).
      If you have the budget, go for a GoPro.

    Salut ! J'ai une question à propos du rollei 35 S, comment est-ce que se fait la mise au point ?

    • @VanDan
      @VanDan  7 лет назад

      Salut Joan, le Rollei 35 étant un appareil compact sans télémètre, la mise au point se fait au jugé, c-a-d que tu dois estimer la distance à laquelle se trouve le sujet et ensuite reporter ton estimation sur la bague de mise au point. Il vaut mieux donc préférer une petite ouverture du diaphragme pour avoir une plus grande plage de netteté pour avoir le sujet en focus.

    someone's selling this for ~350USD here. It looked like it's in excellent condition and comes with strap, mercury battery, lens filters and the manual. I think the price is too high. can anyone give their thought on this? should I offer a lower price and if so, how much? thank you

    • @VanDan

      +Adriana Syakirah Hello Adriana, I think this offer is overpriced, here in France you can find a 35SE for around 200$ only, so in my opinion you should wait for a more interesting offer. Hope you'll find one soon ;)

  • @eddieKai
    @eddieKai 7 лет назад

    how do you know what settings do you need every shot?

    • @VanDan
      @VanDan  7 лет назад +1

      I've used a mobile app to measure the light. Since it was a bright day, I was at f/8 & 1/250 I think.
      Then when I know what are the good settings I just adapt the shutter speed or the aperture (for instance If I decide to move from f/8 to f/5.6 (1 stop), then instead of shooting at 1/250, I shoot at 1/500.
      But as I've mentionned, with this camera, it is better not to choose a large aperture because the focus range will be reduced, increasing your chance not to get your subject in focus; unless you are good at guessing the distance (which I am not at). This is obviously not an easy camera to use, but having this camera is a good exercice to improve at zone focusing and guessing the right exposure (if the lightmeter does not work like mine)
