@@shellztalk I believe that but one can always be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I lived in the hood for three years in Savannah. I'm sure it's safer than Detroit but I wouldn't call it safe. I took a cute home sight unseen over the net in the most unsafe part of Savannah. The thought of a dangerous neighborhood never even occurred to me at the time. lol I guess I was naive. The first thing I experienced was hearing the maintenance man say, "White person moving into our houses" he said it with agitation. I immediately felt sad. His helper who was also Black looked embarrassed that he had said that in earshot of me. He was nice to me from the start. I found the reception to be mixed. Either people were nice to me or I was treated bad. Meaning that a few 18-19 year-olds spit at me as I walked by. Eventually, I became a respected member of the community. Children loved me and I became known as the "Candy lady." I would hand out exciting cellophane wrapped bundles of candy tied with glitzy ribbon, and certain ladies in the community wanted to be my friend. I would say though that living there especially at night felt like the wild wild west. I lived in fear that a random gunshot would strike me in my head as I slept. So after three years, with a heavy heart, I moved. Someone lucked out because I'm an artist and made the place beautiful while I was living there, so whoever moved in after me had a really nice place. My happiest moment as I was leaving was when the initially agitated maintenance man hugged me with tears in his eyes and was sorry to see me leave. He wished me well and said, "I never had a White friend before." He was the same man who said "White person moving into our houses." To me that one experience was worth it all. BTW, Mr. Green, the maintenance man was a nice man after all and an excellent chess player, he had a great mind:-) I will never forget him or the other friends I made while living there. I hope to see them again one day. ❤
However, I understand now when people say they felt say. Because I grew up in that area for a short part of my life and I never seen the area through unsafe or dangerous lenses until I became of age to understand what was going on.
I see a lot of cars newer than mine. Living in a trashy neighborhood in a broken down home. This could be any big city in America. The 'hoods all have the same look. Fatherless homes, illegitimacy, living on welfare and rampant crime. There's no cure for this. Sad😢
