  • I'm pruning my Avatar Grove, an Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) forest that is inspired by the real life Avatar Grove near Port Renfrew in BC Canada.

Glad you discussed after-care of the Avitar forest. There are a lot of bonsai youtubers that do all of this amazing work and never go into how they plan to keep these trees alive afterward.

Love the shaggy "understory" ground cover on the Avatar grove. IMO Adds a great deal to the natural feeling of the grove and ties the entire composition together to evoke the quiet deep forest passage of time.

Great Video Nigel! That cedar grove is fantastic! Wonderful updates! I'm so jealous! I can't wait to get my trees all out. Full moon in June here for frost free. Still dropping down to 3C and sometimes -1 or -2C. I'm doing tree shuffling from the house to the trailer and to outside.

A nice explanation on how your trees are doing in this update, Dr. Saunders.

That was one massive pruning on this forest. When you panned into it, it was like being in an old world forest. Looks great!!!!!

I love the emotional vocalizations when you get close to the limit on some of the branches. I feel your pain.

Thank you for all the years of such practical advice, observations and experimentation. I really enjoy watching the backdrop of your yard in its many iterations from your greenhouse windows. Just a regular family doing regular things.....bonsai, chickens, ducks, working on cars. So very wonderful to share your world, your trees, your wonderings and especially your triumphs and near misses!

Question on the Wrinkly Gollum Jade. I’ve noticed that my Gollums seem to like / need more water than my other jades. Significantly more I’d say - I water them when I notice some leafs getting soft.
Have you observed this with yours as well? Also, thanks for the great videos.

The forest looks neat. As Thuja is a good species for hedges, it seems just cutting through foliage doesn't do much harm, but I heard e.g. on the Japanese Juniperus Chinensis (Shinpaku) this wouldn't be very good for the tree's health, and it'd be better to cut the branches/twigs instead of the folaige tips for reduction.
By the way, I wondered if a deadwood top would look good on the main tree someday. I assume, in nature someday the top dies off and new side shoots take over, creating the cathedral style, so it'd prbably suit your Thuja as well. Probably, as subtle section of deadwood branches could suit the planting well 🙂

Nigel, please address matter of thermometer. When I see it showing 40-50C i'm worrying that you work in such temperatures.
Baobab looking nice ^^, i can sense that when it leafs fully, top will go into a salad :P Good to see Pinus artificial again also.
