I am 72 years old now and as a young boy from the town of Fort Kochi, I remember having Jewish students in my classroom, who looked like any Jew of Israel and I used to visit the Jewish Synagogue in Mattancherry town to see their place, where they used to gather for prayer on a Saturday, and Saturday used to be their day of rest and prayer. They spoke the Malayalam language as any other Malayalee would speak and later when the Israeli nation was formed they all dreamed of going back to Israel. Now the community that lives there are very few, who are emotionally attached to Kochi and Mattancherry town. They were a good business community that lived in peace.

There is absolutely no doubt that because India has a majority of Hindu (80% approx) population, other minor religions live happily. Unlike other Muslim countries where minority don't get proper human rights. Pakistan is the greatest example.

"Tolerance" is a strong word. Other abrahamic religions in the western world "tolerate" non-religious and people from other religions, because they strongly disagree with their practices, but choose to "tolerate" them for the sake of peace.
Hinduism is not like that, it is not "tolerant", rather it is all-accepting and all-inclusive. It does not teach to disagree with other religious practices. Not even all Hindus are same. By "same" I mean, not all Hindus have the same belief system or culture. It differs according to geographical locations, because it does not kill indigenous cultures, rather includes and accepts them. Also, a reason why there are so many gods and goddesses. That's why you see drastically different religious practices all over the country and also among Hindus in different parts of the world. There are several schools of thought within Hinduism, like Samkhya, Yoga, Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Mimamsa and Vedanta, and then there are variations of them.
There are monotheists, polytheists, omnitheists, atheists (yes there have been Hindu atheists throughout history too), etc.
The western world tries to encompass such a vast diversity of cultures and beliefs under one category, because as a whole it is too complex for them to comprehend. The word "Hinduism" was itself coined by someone from the British raj. There's no word for religion in Indian languages. The closest word one finds in Sanskrit is "dharma", but dharma does not mean religion. Even that word does not have an English synonym, and hence has different translations and interpretations. Some of which are, "virtue", " order and custom", "duty", " religious duty", etc.
I am not trying to counter you at all. Just elaborating on the subject a little bit more for people who read this thread.

In India Zoroastrians still exists which were massacred by muslim invaders and had to run away, they exists majorly in India, and they are one of the most peaceful and nationalist community.
In Mumbai, we ( as Marathi / Maharashtrian Hindus) we have always lived with the Marathi Jews, as a a family. Infact, they had their surnames similar to Maharashtrians....i.e. Kolhatkar, Kerker,...! Some of them in the coastal ( Konkan) village regions were refered to as ' teli'. Later, it was known that these 'telis' were not of Hindu Teli caste, but the "one who has come from Tel Aviv" !!
I think 'teli' means 'oil pressers'. The jews of western India ( alibaug) worked as oil pressers.

You do not have to 'officially' convert to Hinduism ( except maybe in the local registry if you want to). The whole point is that if you want to be a Hindu, just be. There is no one book, no one God, no prescribed rituals and no common doctrine, just an overall ethos. This diversity and amorphous framework makes it easy for Indians to accept and assimilate..

I was fortunate to visit Israel, and I was surprised to see, how affectionately the people would talk about India. I came across some students who had heard a lot about India from their parents and wanted to visit India during their summer breaks. From a taxi driver, and vegetable vendor to the hotel owners, when they would know I'm from India, I was treated as a special guest. I came across some folks in a market who were speaking Marathi as their parents migrated long time ago, but still wanted to continue Marathi culture due to their love for India.
I never felt so homely in any other country I visited.

My Dad's best friend was a Jewish person calle Jory. He and my dad were best friends and studied together in College in Pune, Maharashtra. They parted ways when Jory head to Mauritius, while my dad got a job in Bengaluru.
