    Here's some advice from someone who's hunted my entire life and when I wasn't it was because I was in the Army. So let's just say I've spent lots of time in the wilderness.
    First piece of advice. Never go into the woods with these three items. A cigarette lighter, a compass and knife. No you don't need a huge blade. I carried a pocket knife. It has little over a 3 inch blade and I keep it sharp.
    I've carried bigger knives in combat but I've gotten far far more use out of that pocket knife. I've used it for everything from skinning game to cutting rope. A sharp pocket knife is all you need and it's more useful.
    Mine is a small buck knife but I'm not advertising Buck knives. Just pick up a quality pocket knife. Something with a high high carbon blade that holds an edge.
    I keep a Swiss Army knife in my pack. Around camp the one I have can open cans and be useful for all kinds of little tasks. Around camp not while hunting or on the move.
    Just my advice folks take it from this old soldier. Gadgets are cool. Lots of fancy knives out there but my little buck knife dad gave me works just fine for me.

    • @stevedaly730
      @stevedaly730 5 лет назад

      @@turtlewolfpack6061 I generally don't shout while in the wilderness. I don't need a whistle if I don't end up lost.
      It's about common sense. Know where your entering the bush and the direction. Then it's just the opposite when you decide to head out.
      I used to have a compass pinned to my jacket but now days my watch has one built in so I'm good.

      I agree in part except the folding knife, a small fixed blade can do everything your pocket knife can do and more. I think the "survival community" has run out of things to put in packs that they're chucking in hand warmers, chapstick, bit sets, it's out of control. A good solid knife, something to start a fire and a container you can cook in (a compass IF you know how to use one properly, otherwise its useless).

      Steve Daly just because you think that taking a whistle, or a larger fixed blade knife, doesn’t mean others shouldn’t. Taking a long something as simple as a whistle, might actually save your life. Most everyone that got lost in the woods thought they wouldn’t get lost, but it happened. Also accidents happen, what if you get injured from a fall and can’t walk out? Perhaps you fall down a ravine and are not easily seen from a person passing by? The true outdoorsman will be prepared for what might happen, but most likely won’t. I agree that most people fall for new gadgets that come along, but not all of the gear is stupid or not necessary. Just because you have hunted and where in the service, doesn’t make you an expert on survival. I know many who where in the Army that could navigate across the parking lot at Lowe’s. Sorry, but your chest pounding, look at me, I am a mountain man doesn’t impress me. Plus you lose points when you mention you have a compass on your smart phone, sounds like you have trouble using a compass to plot your route.

    I don't think II have ever seen a worst list. Best knife of all of them for survival was the BK9 and that wouldn't even make the top 10 of all time by any means. The only way a Shrade would make any list if it was for a budget. No effort, not impressed.

    The Bekker is the only one I would recommend to someone who takes survival seriously. The rest are just budget options. It should be called the 10 most average budget knives ever and other useless lists. Get a Bekker BK7 or an ESEE 6, don’t waste you time and money. The Kabars are combat, not specific survival knives and the Schades they show have several videos showing the tips brake off. Don’t get me started on the Baer Grills gimmick Chinese pot steel knife.

    • @scottb.0185
      @scottb.0185 5 лет назад

      What Jeff Genchi wrote is correct, Bark River knives are king, they’ll last forever and generally have great sheathes. But make sure you get a good steel, I’d recommend Elmax(S/Steel or CPM 3V (carbon steel).

    • @jeffgenchi5863
      @jeffgenchi5863 5 лет назад +1

      Scott is also correct. I buy mainly CPM 3V that is my favorite. Get a good strop worth a diamond compound and ceramic rod. You will be able to maintain your blade easy in the field. Esee uses 1095 high carbon steel. It is tough but rusts easy and will lose its edge fast. It does sharpen easy though.

    • @mikealmers3707
      @mikealmers3707 5 лет назад +1

      Since I bought my first Bark River knife I have bought very few others. Am at about 18 Bark Rivers now, still waiting on 1 on preorder. Best warranty in business, many styles have several steel options available (from A2 to CPM 3V, CruWear ) or super stainless like Elmax, CPM 154 or S35VN. Then you got handle options micarta, g10, exotic hardwood and burls and acrylics. Did I mention best warranty and customer service EVER! I've talked with Mike Stewart, owner, several times and he is an admin of several knife groups I'm in. Save as little more money and look at getting a real quality semi-custom small production blade.
