This band used to be a great rock band ... now it makes low end pop songs ... It's so sad to see all these great bands lose their soul.
They’ve definitely strayed from their art rock origins but I wouldn’t say they’ve lost their soul so much as become “domesticated.” That’s what happens to most artists as they settle into family life and start having kids. I imagine Nathan, et al, at home playing piano to their little ones and basically responding to that experience in the recording studio.
That said, I wish I could kidnap the band, toss ‘em in the van, and take them on a road trip drenched in the sounds and words of Waits, Can, deepakalypse, Elliott Smith, Portishead, Shuggie Otis, Lou Reed… (you get the picture).
They seem to have settled into a comfort zone. That needs to get pulled out from under them, or at least shaken up a bit.
That said, “Wasted All Night” and “Nowhere To Be” could have easily fit on Dear Miss Lonelyhearts (one of my favorite records from them) quite comfortably.
Maybe if they brought in a producer who works with metal and punk bands…🤔 A little grime in the gears could do the trick🤘🏼

If you didn’t know about Cold War Kids. You’d see this video of a scruffy Nathan Willett in a camo jacket on the beach thinking you’re about to hear some yeehaw song about drinking and America and freedom.
