The scene of the coffeepot pouring black coffee (or "tinto") and a dish with two arepas... Well, that happens in my home every morning: in Colombia you have a black coffee in a teacup between waking up and breakfast, every morning. Grandmas even bring you a tinto to wake you up off bed. The arepas mean breakfast is ready. Not only the nature around the casona (the big house) but also the clothes tell us it's a countryside village AND maybe they tell us the story developes several decades ago. The strong woman is a verraca (kick-ass girl) in old styled village clothing; the black boy is a costeño (person from the coast) because of it's red cravat and his vuelteado (made with many turns) hat. Mirabel's out fit is from Santander villages, maybe resembling a straightforward attitude.

Magic realism is an amazing genre and I love it. I grew up reading García Márquez and Isabel Allende, and watching movies like the Mexican film “Like Water For Chocolate” or the Spanish “Amanece, que no es poco” (The sun rises, and it’s no small thing). I just hope Disney doesn’t mess it up too much

Being a Colombian guy raised in Holland born In Colombia it was always a dream of mine to have a movie that represents my country Colombia’s finest elements, folklore, history, and culture I hope there’s a strong storyline based on some type of story, history or folklore otherwise it will not work for us.. and surely not just randomly using my culture and just adding... Disney Magic and making it a Manuel musical* (it’s already a bummer they used an Puerto Rican composer, no Colombian artist, actors or creators are involved but hey) *because that would really ruin it and for us Colombianos we know what we have to offer so Disney’s main goal should be making a great Colombian Cultural surrealist movie.. ready for international audiences because our history and culture is and was literally dripped in Gold* ( referencing to DreamWork’s The Road To El Dorado) which was almost good..

I remember never finding a princess or movie that looked like me as a kid but now I'm so happy that many children will have a movie to look at and think "this looks like my house!" (I got the ad before checking this video and went "wait is that Colombia?" And about Lin I'm also dad they didn't choose a colombian one buuut I've enjoyed his music for a long long time and he has a really really good sense of folklore music! I'm really excited for this!

@@randompersononline9532 You know, people said the same thing about Moana but then realized that when the merch/ movie(?) was coming out, Disney was inaccurately depicting the Polynesian culture and exploiting it for profit.
I've noticed all of the characters powers are represented in their clothing, also that in the trailer when the golden butterflies first appear over the house is the same moment the word Magic is said, I'd link the two quite heavily. Both the Abuela and Mirabel have butterflies heavily represented in their clothing, and the Candle that brought the house to being had a Butterfly shown on it as well. We know the plot point of the house losing its magic is likely to occur when Abuela and Mirabel have an argument (as we see the cracks in the tiling seperate them). Also Mirabel is the only one we've seen in the trailers to actually speak to the house, the rest just ignore it for the most part, but only Mirabel has spoken TO the house. The only other blood member of the family without a power is the Abuela, as she lit the candle, creating the house, originally. The theme of isolation is around both Abuela and Mirabel as Abuela's husband died or went missing before the house was created and Mirabel is isolated from her family due to their hugely different outlooks, the glowing cracked green glass being pieced together by Mirabel in the trailer is faded out to a cut of her and Antonio together, in the poster with the house, each member has a background colour, Abuela's is a similar shade of green and Bruno, the outcast of the family, wears dark green clothing. The Poster that features the green door also features every members power, along with a butterfly which as I believe is representative of the houses magic is thus representative of both Mirabel and Abuela, there are also some books made for children about the movie/characters with covers featuring Mirabel with the golden butterflies coming from her hands. I believe in the movie, Mirabel will have to go through some kind of gauntlet with each power being a "challenge", as we see in one part where she falls out of a door from a room filled/filling with sand, the door has imagery of an hourglass on it and the member who's powers are represented with the hourglass is Bruno (who can see only negative versions of the future). But Mirabel's clothes don't just have butterflies in them, her skirt appears to feature every members gift, and as its a Disney film about Family, the main plot will naturally lie on Mirabel bringing her family together and each will help her through the gauntlet challenges that relate to their power (as we see Luisa prepare to fight a Cerberus).
Great that you mentioned 100 years of Solitude, the pinnacle of magical realism... And for the movie, I don't think Disney can grasp the complexities of my culture, but maybe gets the interest of the young ones

I love the works of Gabriel Garcia Márquez, his book chronicle of a death foretold, "Crónica de una Muerte Anunciada", it was one of the first books I read, although I've read his masterpiece a hundred years of solitude, "Cien años de Soledad", I think the film will have elements of this and I love it, I would like them to add a legend of Colombian folklore, and above all there will be Lin-Manuel Miranda
Let's not forget Magic Realism also tapped into the concepts and beliefs of the different native tribes of Latin America, which were (and sadly still are ) considered lesser people, thus empowering them and reminding everyone of their rich cultural heritage.

very interesting analysis of Encanto trailer. Saw it in the morning, and thought now it was a new one.
More facts! the first one is that the original name for Mirabel was Mariana because Mariana Pajón the Queen on BMX, however the sound with English accent sounds pretty similar to Mohana so they change it. The second is that Gabo use to said that he just tell the stories of his grandma in one hundred years of solitude, and many Colombians and Latin American people tell stories that are part of their real tangible life but sounds like "magic" to other cultures. A great example is the Mahanaim house in Barichara. (I tell it in the next comment) another is that I Literally ate Anaconda in the Amazon rain forest.

Nice analysis! Soo excited to watch the movie! Got a bit homesick watching the trailers and analysis. I would just say that the house is more characteristic from the coffee region, where the Cocora valley is too. Isabel could also resemble the "eternal spring" and flower diversity celebrated in Medellín (City of the eternal spring) and the flower festival. The Anteater is also a typical animal in Colombia and south America, it's cool to see it here. So happy to have a movie that highlights positive aspects of the country!
What's weirdest about the setting is that Colombia is a real place, not an imagined fairytale kingdom. It didn't deal with Colombian politics or issues, only making reference to a civil war I think occurred turn of the last century. The story was also a lot like Moana, she even retrieves the magic glowing green thing. It's a Disney movie so I don't blame them for leaving out what any Colombian would tell you defined life there: the Catholic church. In reality these people would be extremely conservative catholics. They would realize the Madrigal family are all jungle witches who's wordly power is evil and an affront to the church. 📜😱🧙🔥
I loved this video!! Amazing! I would loved to see gold, emeralds and our love for “la selección” our national soccer team which is something Colombia is also known for but hey I am not complaining! I left my country 20 years ago and I have two kids now who will have the chance to see their roots on a big screen and that makes me very proud! Actually the magical realism bit of this movie sold me I didn’t want it to be another Disney movie that is trying to capitalize off foreign culture. This is paying homage to a known and respected literary style and just doing it in a animated form that will be for kids and just fun family fun for everyone so I really hope they lean into the literary and cultural storytelling influences from Colombia instead of just trying to drop a bunch of food and song and movie references into the movie to get people excited without actually providing any substance.
You read my mind. Most of their animated movies lately felt like walking at cultural festival or watching cultural documentary rather than movie with plot. It seems like they are focusing too much to sell a bunch of merchandise (the food, clothing in the movie) hence it felt a little bit like a movie for commercial. While maybe once or twice is fine, keep using it people gonna get tired quickly.
Actually the real meaning of the word “encanto” in this movie will be more accurately translated to the english word: “Enchantment”, more in the sense of: - The act or art of enchanting - The quality or state of being enchanted - Something or someone that enchants.
Yeah! All characters refer several things like: colombian personality, regions with its traditions and Macondo from gabo that has the same inspiration: colombia.
Thoughts on the Villains morality (Unless Disney wants to make no antagonist AGAIN): S/He hates magic and wishes to replace it with science, OR S/He feels cheated by their use of magic and seeks to drain all the magic out of the family.
I just finished reading 100 years of solitude and Midnight's Children and Disney would never have the courage to do real magical realism. Magical Realism is supposed to be controversial and bite a little. Disney never bites. This movie will simply be fantasy.

Hi. I saw the film for the fist time a few days ago and I did enjoy it. I think my analysis in this video was a bit off in some ways, and I was thinking of doing a more in depth video, however I feel like a lot of other channels have already done that. I did enjoy researching this video though and it got me back into Magical Realism.
I'd say that the girl in the white dress, instead of being "Madre Monte" is more like another call for magical realism, to me she seems to be "Remedios la bella" whom, in the book, ascends to heaven with white sheets
Is the Disney Game from Japan, Twisted Wonderland is also Magical Realism? Because the other world the MC came, Twisted Wonderland, is similar to the modern society but with magic and different types of beings tha humans, but they live in a society similar to our way of modern living with a mix of magic. Also not all beings in that world have magic, so there are people with magic and no magic.

It's trying to sum up a lot of different cultures all in one, so no word is going to be perfect, but "Latin" is what they came up with.
Would the movie, District 9, be loosely considered “magical realism? It uses Aliens to explain the harsh realities of what people gone through during apartheid. The origin of the aliens are never explained. It also has no clear solution to the problems faced by those living in the aforementioned conflict.

No, I don't think the characters are based in local folklore; they appear to be based in Betty la fea, which is the most famous Colombian soap ever. Not mythology which in Colombia has been lost in most part in urban regions and just as everywhere they explain the origins of life and ways of life (in center Andean area that would be Bachue, Bochica, and elsewhere they have their own) but local beliefs go pretty much like Asian shinto (spiritism) between creatures that either protect nature, or attack humans either provoked or unprovoked, or both like el Mohán which kidnaps pretty girs or the Hombre Caimán (not an actor that goes by that name); those look instead as every day habilities, like having a touch with animals or with plants, but presented in a magical way
Also, another name for Madremonte is Madreselva, and though monte literally translates to mountain, it also means the vegetation that grows in the mountain in colloquial speech. When people with bad intentions get into the jungle they get lost as the Madremonte/Madreselva surrounds them in vegetation disorienting them. Rather than mountain it should mean mother of vegetation/ mother of the jungle. That, making aside the spirits of the rivers or the spirits from elsewhere, or more common creatures like the duendes (kinda like European gnomes) which take care of nature, but also range from mischief like stealing or misplacing things in houses to plain evil
Making aside that Betty's plot is symilar to this one (an average woman working in a fashion company where every other woman is a supermodel), concerning reality elements that would be 'everything'. While in other movies they seem to create a fantasy environment and then add ethnic or realistic elements, this movie seems to have been built around them. As you point out if I google images of Salento, Guatepé and other places around the coffee-growing area I will find architecture quite symilar to this one, as well as landscapes. In previous trailer they showed an indigenous girl from one region wearing body paint from another region; that was a mish mash made up character; now they show real people and I am sure after they show the movie there will be comments inside families about 'I saw you in Encanto' or people being nicknamed after Encanto characters. There is a hughe building I am not sure if located in Armenia or Pereira called the Mariposario, dedicatad to preservation and showcase of all kinds of butterflies
As a Colombia I grew up Listening to horror stories about "la Madre monte". My grandpa usted to say he saw her once...she is horrible, looks and smells like a rotten corps, has fire eyes as well as long sharp teeth...she just wanders the jungles Looking for sinners to eat them up 🙈I would not compare her to Mirabel's sister 😁
Gabo's Magic Realism is based in an imaginary Colombian Caribbean town. The Caribbean Colombia is stewed in culture, with a culture, myths and legends on its own. Hundreds years of solitude reads naturally for Caribbean people. The stories resonate real, no matter how magic they might be. The sayings and places sound familiar. I wish Disney had portrayed this more loyaly in the movie. Gabo's magic realism is essentially Caribbean. For some reason they decided to transport it to the Andes, which for is the antithesis of the Caribbean.
The movie is not called Cien años de soledad, is called Encanto. Same for those people that keep saying there are cities in Colombia; yes, we know there are cities everywhere; if they showed life in cities how would that be representative of anything. For those that keep saying is Colombia not Columbia, is also London not Londres; that's how you write it in that language. Here they show elements from everywhere; there are (lots of) people with ruanas which are from the central Andean area (which may be between 2k and 3k meters above sea level). If people used those in the coffee area they would suffocate probably. There are people with sombreros vueltiaos and the flower girl uses a carnaval dress; there are animals from the Amazon and from the eastern plains; if those were togheter in real life one of those would take the other for lunch. And for many people out there, stop pretending to be entitled as if Disney owes you anything; sit back and enjoy the ride

Being a Colombian guy raised in Holland born In Colombia it was always a dream of mine to have a movie that represents my country Colombia’s finest elements, folklore, history, and culture I hope there’s a strong storyline based on some type of story, history or folklore otherwise it will not work for us..
and surely not just randomly using my culture and just adding... Disney Magic and making it a Manuel musical* (it’s already a bummer they used an Puerto Rican composer, no Colombian artist, actors or creators are involved but hey)
*because that would really ruin it and for us Colombianos we know what we have to offer so

I remember never finding a princess or movie that looked like me as a kid but now I'm so happy that many children will have a movie to look at and think "this looks like my house!" (I got the ad before checking this video and went "wait is that Colombia?"

@@randompersononline9532 You know, people said the same thing about Moana but then realized that when the merch/ movie(?) was coming out, Disney was inaccurately depicting the Polynesian culture and exploiting it for profit.
I've noticed all of the characters powers are represented in their clothing, also that in the trailer when the golden butterflies first appear over the house is the same moment the word Magic is said, I'd link the two quite heavily.
Both the Abuela and Mirabel have butterflies heavily represented in their clothing, and the Candle that brought the house to being had a Butterfly shown on it as well. We know the plot point of the house losing its magic is likely to occur when Abuela and Mirabel have an argument (as we see the cracks in the tiling seperate them). Also Mirabel is the only one we've seen in the trailers to actually speak to the house, the rest just ignore it for the most part, but only Mirabel has spoken TO the house.
The only other blood member of the family without a power is the Abuela, as she lit the candle, creating the house, originally. The theme of isolation is around both Abuela and Mirabel as Abuela's husband died or went missing before the house was created and Mirabel is isolated from her family due to their hugely different outlooks, the glowing cracked green glass being pieced together by Mirabel in the trailer is faded out to a cut of her and Antonio together, in the poster with the house, each member has a background colour, Abuela's is a similar shade of green and Bruno, the outcast of the family, wears dark green clothing.
The Poster that features the green door also features every members power, along with a butterfly which as I believe is representative of the houses magic is thus representative of both Mirabel and Abuela, there are also some books made for children about the movie/characters with covers featuring Mirabel with the golden butterflies coming from her hands.
I believe in the movie, Mirabel will have to go through some kind of gauntlet with each power being a "challenge", as we see in one part where she falls out of a door from a room filled/filling with sand, the door has imagery of an hourglass on it and the member who's powers are represented with the hourglass is Bruno (who can see only negative versions of the future).
But Mirabel's clothes don't just have butterflies in them, her skirt appears to feature every members gift, and as its a Disney film about Family, the main plot will naturally lie on Mirabel bringing her family together and each will help her through the gauntlet challenges that relate to their power (as we see Luisa prepare to fight a Cerberus).
Great that you mentioned 100 years of Solitude, the pinnacle of magical realism... And for the movie, I don't think Disney can grasp the complexities of my culture, but maybe gets the interest of the young ones

I love the works of Gabriel Garcia Márquez, his book chronicle of a death foretold, "Crónica de una Muerte Anunciada", it was one of the first books I read, although I've read his masterpiece a hundred years of solitude, "Cien años de Soledad", I think the film will have elements of this and I love it, I would like them to add a legend of Colombian folklore, and above all there will be Lin-Manuel Miranda
Let's not forget Magic Realism also tapped into the concepts and beliefs of the different native tribes of Latin America, which were (and sadly still are ) considered lesser people, thus empowering them and reminding everyone of their rich cultural heritage.

More facts! the first one is that the original name for Mirabel was Mariana because Mariana Pajón the Queen on BMX, however the sound with English accent sounds pretty similar to Mohana so they change it. The second is that Gabo use to said that he just tell the stories of his grandma in one hundred years of solitude, and many Colombians and Latin American people tell stories that are part of their real tangible life but sounds like "magic" to other cultures. A great example is the Mahanaim house in Barichara. (I tell it in the next comment) another is that I Literally ate Anaconda in the Amazon rain forest.

Nice analysis! Soo excited to watch the movie! Got a bit homesick watching the trailers and analysis. I would just say that the house is more characteristic from the coffee region, where the Cocora valley is too. Isabel could also resemble the "eternal spring" and flower diversity celebrated in Medellín (City of the eternal spring) and the flower festival. The Anteater is also a typical animal in Colombia and south America, it's cool to see it here. So happy to have a movie that highlights positive aspects of the country!
What's weirdest about the setting is that Colombia is a real place, not an imagined fairytale kingdom. It didn't deal with Colombian politics or issues, only making reference to a civil war I think occurred turn of the last century. The story was also a lot like Moana, she even retrieves the magic glowing green thing. It's a Disney movie so I don't blame them for leaving out what any Colombian would tell you defined life there: the Catholic church. In reality these people would be extremely conservative catholics. They would realize the Madrigal family are all jungle witches who's wordly power is evil and an affront to the church. 📜😱🧙🔥
I loved this video!! Amazing! I would loved to see gold, emeralds and our love for “la selección” our national soccer team which is something Colombia is also known for but hey I am not complaining! I left my country 20 years ago and I have two kids now who will have the chance to see their roots on a big screen and that makes me very proud! Actually the magical realism bit of this movie sold me I didn’t want it to be another Disney movie that is trying to capitalize off foreign culture.
This is paying homage to a known and respected literary style and just doing it in a animated form that will be for kids and just fun family fun for everyone so I really hope they lean into the literary and cultural storytelling influences from Colombia instead of just trying to drop a bunch of food and song and movie references into the movie to get people excited without actually providing any substance.
You read my mind. Most of their animated movies lately felt like walking at cultural festival or watching cultural documentary rather than movie with plot. It seems like they are focusing too much to sell a bunch of merchandise (the food, clothing in the movie) hence it felt a little bit like a movie for commercial. While maybe once or twice is fine, keep using it people gonna get tired quickly.

Actually the real meaning of the word “encanto” in this movie will be more accurately translated to the english word: “Enchantment”, more in the sense of:
- The act or art of enchanting
- The quality or state of being enchanted

I just finished reading 100 years of solitude and Midnight's Children and Disney would never have the courage to do real magical realism. Magical Realism is supposed to be controversial and bite a little. Disney never bites. This movie will simply be fantasy.
I doubt it will be fully magical realism genre as disney target is children so they will focused on magic element as it would understood better by children.

Hi. I saw the film for the fist time a few days ago and I did enjoy it. I think my analysis in this video was a bit off in some ways, and I was thinking of doing a more in depth video, however I feel like a lot of other channels have already done that. I did enjoy researching this video though and it got me back into Magical Realism.
I'd say that the girl in the white dress, instead of being "Madre Monte" is more like another call for magical realism, to me she seems to be "Remedios la bella" whom, in the book, ascends to heaven with white sheets

Because the other world the MC came, Twisted Wonderland, is similar to the modern society but with magic and different types of beings tha humans, but they live in a society similar to our way of modern living with a mix of magic. Also not all beings in that world have magic, so there are people with magic and no magic.
So far I'm going into this movie with an open mind granted never read cien años de soledad but I do hope it does well. Also Disney needs to make a native American inspired movie and no not a Pocahontas- esque movie i mean a modern native American inspired movie with lore and stories of this culture

It's trying to sum up a lot of different cultures all in one, so no word is going to be perfect, but "Latin" is what they came up with.

Would the movie, District 9, be loosely considered “magical realism? It uses Aliens to explain the harsh realities of what people gone through during apartheid. The origin of the aliens are never explained. It also has no clear solution to the problems faced by those living in the aforementioned conflict.
That sounds like an allegory, like Animal Farm. But I’m still learning about the differences in the sub-genre of fantasy, so. Besides District 9 is sci-fi.

No, I don't think the characters are based in local folklore; they appear to be based in Betty la fea, which is the most famous Colombian soap ever. Not mythology which in Colombia has been lost in most part in urban regions and just as everywhere they explain the origins of life and ways of life (in center Andean area that would be Bachue, Bochica, and elsewhere they have their own) but local beliefs go pretty much like Asian shinto (spiritism) between creatures that either protect nature, or attack humans either provoked or unprovoked, or both like el Mohán which kidnaps pretty girs or the Hombre Caimán (not an actor that goes by that name); those look instead as every day habilities, like having a touch with animals or with plants, but presented in a magical way
Also, another name for Madremonte is Madreselva, and though monte literally translates to mountain, it also means the vegetation that grows in the mountain in colloquial speech. When people with bad intentions get into the jungle they get lost as the Madremonte/Madreselva surrounds them in vegetation disorienting them. Rather than mountain it should mean mother of vegetation/ mother of the jungle. That, making aside the spirits of the rivers or the spirits from elsewhere, or more common creatures like the duendes (kinda like European gnomes) which take care of nature, but also range from mischief like stealing or misplacing things in houses to plain evil
Making aside that Betty's plot is symilar to this one (an average woman working in a fashion company where every other woman is a supermodel), concerning reality elements that would be 'everything'. While in other movies they seem to create a fantasy environment and then add ethnic or realistic elements, this movie seems to have been built around them. As you point out if I google images of Salento, Guatepé and other places around the coffee-growing area I will find architecture quite symilar to this one, as well as landscapes. In previous trailer they showed an indigenous girl from one region wearing body paint from another region; that was a mish mash made up character; now they show real people and I am sure after they show the movie there will be comments inside families about 'I saw you in Encanto' or people being nicknamed after Encanto characters. There is a hughe building I am not sure if located in Armenia or Pereira called the Mariposario, dedicatad to preservation and showcase of all kinds of butterflies

Gabo's Magic Realism is based in an imaginary Colombian Caribbean town. The Caribbean Colombia is stewed in culture, with a culture, myths and legends on its own. Hundreds years of solitude reads naturally for Caribbean people. The stories resonate real, no matter how magic they might be. The sayings and places sound familiar. I wish Disney had portrayed this more loyaly in the movie. Gabo's magic realism is essentially Caribbean. For some reason they decided to transport it to the Andes, which for is the antithesis of the Caribbean.
The movie is not called Cien años de soledad, is called Encanto. Same for those people that keep saying there are cities in Colombia; yes, we know there are cities everywhere; if they showed life in cities how would that be representative of anything. For those that keep saying is Colombia not Columbia, is also London not Londres; that's how you write it in that language. Here they show elements from everywhere; there are (lots of) people with ruanas which are from the central Andean area (which may be between 2k and 3k meters above sea level). If people used those in the coffee area they would suffocate probably. There are people with sombreros vueltiaos and the flower girl uses a carnaval dress; there are animals from the Amazon and from the eastern plains; if those were togheter in real life one of those would take the other for lunch. And for many people out there, stop pretending to be entitled as if Disney owes you anything; sit back and enjoy the ride
