Absolutely. Although JP aren't my favourite heavy metal band, this song has everything to make it the quintessential metal song: super-fast, complex arrangement, super drum & guitar work, loud, screaming wide-range vocals.
Painkiller is [in my opinion] the greatest heavy metal album of all time, as it represents the many different kinds of heavy metal! Also in relation to Judas Priests' 70s and 80s rock albums, it came out of nowhere haha! They acquired a new drummer named Scott Travis in 1989 and in 1990, as Steve Huey of Allmusic stated.. "Scotts' percussive maelstrom immediately lights a fire under the other band members' asses"! And he was right! Haha
this was an era when priest(who had already been around for 20 yrs)were being challenged by younger groups like metallica megadeth pantera so they just stepped up and crushed it
Glenn Tipton wasn't just a guitar genius, he was smokin hot. And this was the debut for new drummer Scott Travis. Proved his chops out the gate. I would not trade a single minute of seeing them live in the 70s-80s! I'm 60 now, but still bangin my head.
Glen Tipton is the most underrated metal guitarist ever. He does all those wicked leads. The colorful tremolo bending is K.K. Downing's job. Together, just an incredible sound that spans so much territory. But yeah, Tipton's technical skill is vastly, vastly underrated. Hell, I think he's brilliant.
@@rbarrett111 if you havent check out the album tipton put out a long time ago, its pretty damn good. it broke my heart when i heard that he had parkinsons
Man you jumped right into the HEAVY Judas Priest. This came out in the early 90's and was way heavier than their normal stuff. (Maybe they wanted to compete with the younger heavier bands of the time) Great song, but you should check out their earlier stuff. Totally different sound. Their 70's classic stuff is awesome with that dirty 70's rock sort of sound, and the 80's stuff has that big arena metal, well....80"s sound. These guys are huge inspirations for so many metal musicians out there. You just chipped at a small piece of the iceberg man. Just like Iron Maiden, they have SO MANY albums and top of the radio charts songs. One of the true Godfathers of metal.
Came here to say this. Yes, check out some older priest - when they were a bit more weed speed than meth speed, so to speak. They have some pretty broad dimensions for a metal act . . . and this one was the dimension of what a mama dragon might sound like. Priest has been around a long time, and have many albums. Someone just recommended this because it's the highest the singer, Rob Halford ever gets. I honestly agree this song is kind of shit - UNLESS you're a Judas Priest fan who has heard all their other incredible stuff. "Stained Class" is the ONE album I would choose above any other to take on a deserted island. Second would be John Coltrane - so I mean, Priest HAS ruled during their time, and it's well worth listening to just some of their older stuff than this. I mean, roll up a fatty and check out "Stained Class" my dudes. You'll at least come away saying damn those dudes are musical - which is more than one can really honestly say for this song. There ARE whole albums of Priest that are like this song you've chosen. I actually avoid those albums. Go for the old stuff with Priest, man.
The guitarist with the star shaped guitar that did the really long first solo is Glenn Tipton, and the other guitarist with the V shaped guitar that did the second shorter solo is K.K Downing. Both of them are amazingly talented, and have been incredibly influential on many other guitarists for decades. The vocalist is Rob Halford, and he is a living legend among heavy metal vocalists.
For me the cool thing is: "Painkiller" never gets old. 30 years after it was released, it still rocks my world. Love watching someone new react to the serious metal onslaught of the song, too.
Ha... ha fun fact. God my youth. Fun fact I was a "Philly Punker" in the early 80's and transitioned into a metal band a few years later. If you were alive and aware of the east coast punk scene of the late 70's early 80's the the Philly crowd were a bit "different" a bit overboard even for the punk scene. At one point anyone from Phila or Delaware county was banned from cbgb around that period. Ah to be young and indescribable.
This is Rob Halfords high range. You can hear toward the end when he goes back down to his normal range. He has a multi octave voice. This song is unique among Priest songs in that he spe ds most of the song in the upper end of his range.
Yooo you're hearing priest 20 years after they began. You should hear their earlier stuff you'll be baffled to hear the difference. Priest changed with the times. Its why they lasted so long.
I think most Priest fans could agree that *VICTIM OF CHANGES* is what you should do next. It's turned back a couple notches, but still dope. This came out in 1990, Victim of Changes dropped in 1973.
British Steel released in 1980, a new music category is born. 1990, people say "Metal " is dead. And "The Metal Gods" look down and say here we come and here is our gift.
Yep, Robs voice is unique and still going strong and the man is nearly 70 years old! Priest was one of the bands that made the blue-print for every metal band ever.
@@parallelearthstudio8385 Classic album, of course.. but the audio is a bit muddier than on albums like Abigail or Conspiracy. I'd save THEM for after doing a crisper-sounding track like 'Abigail', 'Family Ghost', or "Sleepless Nights" but that's just my personal preference in the belief that a crisper sound gives a better overall impression that would lead to more reactions to the band instead of just being a one-off reaction due to what I view as lower audio quality on that specific album.
Judas Priest and Iron Maiden defined what Heavy Metal is. They separated Heavy Metal from just Rock, defined the look, sub culture, and sound. The term Heavy Metal had existed prior and used to describe bands on and off but Priest and Maiden were different because they said out right, "We are a Heavy Metal Band."

The Hellion is a great example of mid 80s JP at their finest. Enjoy the journey! All the best from MA
I'm not a Priest fan, never have been, but this song is undeniable. Swaggy, one item of note - the singer came out in 1998. Today that's not such a big thing, but metal has historically been... shall we say "very macho" culture? I think most people kind of figured, but he definitely paved the way for a lot of acceptance to a large group of people. Anyways, great reaction.

Question to Google : What is HEAVY METAL?
Answer: PAIIIIIIIIIINKILLERRRRR !!!!!
The Metal God at his best!! 🤘🏻😈
Two lead guitarists, two solos - isn't that how it works?
You started into Judas Priest at a pretty extreme point - I don't think I'd play anyone "Painkiller" as their first Priest song, unless I somehow got stuck babysitting a psychotic 6-year-old who's just eaten five pounds of sugar.
A few (slightly) less-frenetic Priest songs to consider:
"Rapid Fire"
"Hell Bent For Leather"
"Exciter"
"Diamonds And Rust"
"Riding On The Wind"
"Breaking The Law"
"Screaming For Vengeance"
"Heading Out To The Highway"
"Jawbreaker"
And two more that I'm always surprised that nobody's done a hip-hop version:
"Living After Midnight" is the all-night party anthem, it STARTS at 1:00 AM.
"You've Got Another Thing Coming" is a guy young, strong and proud, and not about to take shit from anybody. Don't even think about getting in his damn way.

Needed is a classic. Stargazer by Rainbow. Where that drum solo in the beginning came from.
The Judas Priest express train 😜💪🚂🤘
If you wanna hear Glenn and KK trading solos check out songs like Rapid Fire, the Sentinel, Hellrider,
It was the law in the 80s to have a JP patch on your jean jacket...
