this was incredibly reassuring as a right brained writer! half of my ideas are scribbled in random places and my notes app i could never bring myself to do organized outlines and templates. creative intuition is underrated!
Formulaic writing steals from creativity. I don’t subscribe to it. What’s creativity if you’re not willing to break or bend the rules? 🙃 Great content as usual.
Yeah, I think it's important to know the purpose of the various elements in the Hero's Journey, rather than being stuck on just the formula. The Hero's Journey is basically a coming-of-age story where a greenhorn character becomes mature and capable, right? As long as you know that, you don't have to follow every step to the letter. Like, some of my stories don't have the "wise old mentor," because the protagonist is being taught by some other character, like the sidekick, or the love interest, or even an antagonist.
Yeah, whenever I hear someone say, "Show, don't tell," I know they're fresh out of writing classes. In practice, showing and telling are both needed, and the trick is to figure out when it's best to show and when it's best to tell. But I agree, rules aren't always the best thing. They're great when you're first learning; they provide a nice structure and guide, but once you really understand the rules, then you can consciously conceive of why you should want to break them.
Very interesting! Best homework info "before you can break the rules you have to know the rules. "
Structure is a road map but it doesnt show you what you will see on the trip. That's the fun part. The sight seeing on the ride to your destination
"Form, not a formula" is just an absolutely genius expression. and so true as well
Pat is one of the most humble and wise speakers on the channel. The world needs many more Pat’s.

This channel is gold as always.
Cheers!
Yesss!, this is the creative battery that I need right now to charge my rule breaking first creative instinct. I can't thank her enough!

These Rock!
After every mainstream business goes bankrupt and alternative creators arent attacked for different opinions, then this might be useful. Thanks
I love you Pat ****

Never follow a blueprint. Creating your own is what will make you stand out and go far ✍ 📃 🎬 ACTION 🎥

I prefer people who make what they want without using the “rules” if that is their choice. I love originality rather than formulas.
about the only formula is that you need a beginning, middle and end.
#writingcommunity really needs to listen to this. Half of the rules are contradiction to storytelling
