  • A slideshow of some of my favorite nail pictures. I have gathered these to illustrate my answer to a common question: Once you have chopped the dog's nail to the "shortest" length, right to the quick, can you get it shorter? Yes, if you use the right technique!
    Thanks for watching!

This video from 1:48 to 1:57 is what I've been needing to see for 3 years. As hard as I've tried I haven't been able to recede Toby's quicks, and his nails are really long and looked like the left side of the frame at 1:48. I am working towards what your boy's nails look like at 1:57 - such a great comparison - thank you Colleen!

This is without a doubt the most valuable video EVER made on dog nail care!! The visuals make it so easy to understand what you want to do. Plus some of them are just beautiful photos in themselves.
And this is not just a grooming issue - many dogs develop serious reactivity around nail care, that it can cause serious generalized behavior problems, frequent and unnecessary sedation and a health risk to dog and owner. My most recent dog was returned to the shelter after three years because nail trimming at his first family's vet became such a rodeo the dog developed a bite history specific to the vet's office. Then after inadvertently training the dog to bite, the vet recommended euthanasia. Thanks to your excellent RUclips channel, GDG, after two years working up to it, the same dog lets me Dremel his nails freehand, any day of the week. But, there's how serious a topic this is: my dog almost died because the owner didn't know how to do nails themselves.
This is a great service to the dog world. Thank you. And I will be sharing this with all my dog friends and clients.

What a great story - I know it will mean a lot to Colleen to read this - she is amazing! I think this is her most helpful video too, although there are a lot of great ones.

Your videos are the most informative and detailed nail trimming tutorial I have found. All other images I could find out there are just diagrams or just not clear enough. My dog and I thank you!

Hi! So I had been taking my dog to a local vet to have the nails dremeled and I never liked how they did it. They had real sharp points on the ends and I had to have them redo it at one point, so I feel like they really didn’t know what they were doing
so today I took her to a vet that I had gone to years ago and I showed them some of your photographs about the trim and where the quick is and how to take off the top layer and they said their protocol did not allow them to Dremel the top or the size of the nail Because they said some dogs, Quicks do not lie at the bottom of the nail bed, but do rise much higher
Now, even though my dogs nails are darker, I could see where the quick is from a side view and they could’ve taken off at least half of that, but they wouldn’t do it, They refused to do it
so they did a very good job on her otherwise, nice rounded tips etc.
so I the only thing I can really do is to take her in more often instead of every 2 1/2 months I’m going to take her in once a month for the next three or four months and see if that at least doesn’t help chase the quicks back.
    I will let you know

I’m glad they were able to improve their technique somewhat… it will be a worthy experiment to find out in increasing the frequency like that helps! It will probably depend on how close they really are getting to the quick. Some people will tell you that receding the quick requires an extremely high frequency (dremeling every 2-3 days). I don’t generally agree with that, and here’s my video explaining why, in case it helps: ruclips.net/video/k2I0EwlZaZk/видео.htmlsi=EmXw90Cj5ZabsQqQ Technique matters more than frequency although frequency is indeed a factor. Best of luck!

    Great explanation!
Any further tips on black nails? Other than visualizing where you imagine the quick to be based on understanding the anatomy of the nail and trimming accordingly, I guess?

Hi! You've helped me out in the past and I'm still trying to receed my boys quicks haha. I think I needed to add the extra helmet removal part of it. I do Dremel a little underneath to clean there up then the side and then I'd round the nail so it wasn't pointy. But from what it sounds like I need to do the sides still, but also take the Dremel and take the top off too. I tried this yesterday felt weird because I wasn't sure how far into the top I could go (wasn't in the lightest of light to see the quicks) so I stopped haha. Would it be ok when doing the sides to continue the side over the top/helmet if that makes sense (like continue the diagonal side stroke)?? Or would it be best to get the nail area lit back wise so that I can see the quick area and then accurately take the top off (still doing the sides)? Since the quick hasn't receded to where I need them should I do this process every 3 days or so until the quick has receeded and then do every 1-2 wks or longer for maintenance.

Can you provide tips on how to trim a dogs nails when they fight like crazy? Both my dogs detest the nail trims and I don’t want to have to sedate them.
