This episode had a lot of impact in South Korea. On July 29, a demonstration was held against the proposal by Education Minister Park Soon Ae, that intended to lower school entry age to five years-old, with a lot of signages making direct references to Bang Guppong’s lines on children’s well-being. The Education Minister has backed off from the proposal after the outcry.

Ep.9 is related to 어린이날(Childrens's Day) in Korea, May 5th.
Bang Gu-ppong's last name is the same as Bang Jeong-hwan,
who insisted on the liberation of children
and announced Declaration on the Rights of the Child
    during the Japanese Occupation Period.
Mr. Bang's birthday is same as Children's Day.
Mr. Bang's job, Commander-in-Chief for the Liberation of Children is also related to Bang Jeong-hwan.
And declaration on the liberation of children in this Drama
is similar to Declaration on the Rights of the Child, 1923.
It was ahead of Geneva Declaration on the Rights of Children, 1924.
+"어린이(Eo-rin-i)" is a unique Korean word
which means similar to child, but it sounds different.
    어린(Eo-rin) means young,
and 이(i)(sounds like alphabet E) means person or human.
Bang Jeong-hwan was sad that child was not recognized as a person like adult in those time.
So he made a word 어린이,
and he wanted children to be respected as a person.

The impact of this episode is huge! The gov. of Korea is trying to lower the age to enter elementary and parents are trying to protest with Bang Guppong's line "Children must play now".
I think that's the charm of this show. There's always a message yet it doesn't force ideas to the viewers. There's always a discussion (especially with ep 10).

It's interesting how the writer already set up the issue with the hardcore studying through episode 3, where a medical student committed suicide due to no longer being able to handle it. Some of those kids will probably end up like him in the future. I've also read that on National Exam Day in South Korea, they don't allow planes to fly over the country in fear of disturbing the students.

I am in my 40s and was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. When I was in high school, I had to study at school from 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. It was normal at that time and unfortunately it still works in other forms.Of course, now it is much better than before, but the enthusiasm for education in Korea is still not cooling down. It is driving force of Korea's rapid development, but it also made various social problems. Many of Koreans are trying to solve this problem little by little. This episode ... a little extreme and forced. But I think it was a necessary subject. I had a great time with you. thanks

Studying at private academies after school isn’t even just normal in Korea, it is expected. It’s weird/looked down upon if you DON’T send your kid to an academy. Of course, you can send them to specialised ones, so like an English academy, or music, or gymnastics, etc. or there are just general, all school subject ones.

    • @thedrunkenelf
      @thedrunkenelf 2 года назад +19

Private academies were banned during the eighties but there was such a huge push back they were allowed again. Some (lots) of Koreans see the mandatory school hours as getting in the way of academy time, and that you learn everything at academies anyway so school is becoming more of a burden that people don’t appreciate anymore.

@@kflowers8276 The reason the government does not make hagwons into schools is that hagwons and schools are different from each other. This is because schools provide a variety of classes with a curriculum tailored to the developmental process of children, but excessive prior learning occurs at hagwons. Usually, hagwons in Seoul have elementary school students study for the SAT.

This case was so touching for me, the happiness of children is so important. I wholeheartedly agreed with his message, especially with the high rates of child and teen suicide in Asian countries. And the severe bullying due to the stress and lack of play and interaction, the kids become almost soulless and bully other children to the point of near death, and most don't have remorse or empathy because those traits are not developed through interaction, nor are they shown these traits because its all about academic performance and competition.
But not his methods, and you just know he went to jail as he should've and as he was willing. I love that Attorney Woo realized they are already going to lose because he did commit a crime that deserves to be punished, but she could support and defend his ideology. That's her defense.
I loved the development of the romance and relationships this week. So sad yall didn't include the cafeteria scene and most of the chivalrous scenes for the RUclips review, but still really enjoyed it! Looking forward to yall's next reactions!

The result of the trial didn't show like Bang Gu Bbong said, he doesn't want the children to think the price of playing is ending up in jail. It wasn't just lines, it was a message to the viewers.
Many viewers say that if Gu - Bbong named the act as "Play education by a graduate from Seoul National University", the parents would have allowed it.

I just came back from teaching in China for 6 years and I can't tell you how much this episode resonated with me. I worked at an international bilingual school teaching 4th grade and during testing weeks, I had students so nervous that some would be physically sick, vomiting at school, going to the nurse with stomach aches, etc...my school let out at quarter to 5 every day and just about every student had an extra class or sport after school for at least 2 hours and some didn't get home until after 7-8pm, then they still had to do homework. on the weekends, they often had music or extra English classes so they didn't really have any time to play. even during the school holidays, we were required to send home holiday work packs for the kids to get extra practice and this was common practice for all the grades, as low as Kindergarten. the competition in China might even be worse than in SK because there are even more people (but don't quote me on that). so yeah, this episode had me crying at the end when the kids came to the court and Bang guppong recited the motto of the Children's Liberation Army with them. I mean, yeah, he did kidnap them technically but he got their permission and he brought them back safely. I know they're children but there's one thing I've learned after teaching for 14 years: children have their own ideas and their own voice and we should give them a say in their lives and education. if we just take the time to listen to them, we'd be surprised at what they have to say. great reaction, as usual guys! ❤

'MISUGARU' = Powder made of Mixed grains.
Grain powder is made by steaming, drying, and grinding grains. Through this process, it is sterilized and dried enough, so it hardly spoils even if you don't eat much, and if you mix several grains such as beans and oats, you can get other nutrients.
You can eat it as it is, but it is very thirsty and stuffy, so Koreans usually drink it with water or milk, and they often drink it cool by mixing grain powder with cold water and then floating ice. Misugaru with ice is a representative thirst-relieving drink in summer along with Sikhye and watermelon punch.

The correct pronounciation is more like misoot-gharu. There are different variants to the mixed grain which can consist of only few different grains but personally ive seen some that have close to 20 different kinds. Some variants include beans and dried vegetables to improve different types of nutrients.

In South Korea, the Minister of Justice is partially like the United States Attorney General, he/she is a member of the Cabinet of the South Korean Government, and he/she is like a Secretary of Justice. What happens is that in South Korea, the role of the Attorney General is divided into two different posts, that of the Minister of Justice, which is part of the Cabinet, and that of the Prosecutor General (who is under the supervision of the Minister of Justice). The Minister of Justice is nominated by the President of South Korea and must be ratified by the National Assembly (which is like the US Congress). That is why Woo's mother is exposed to a scandal during the confirmation process in the National Assembly.

Their life was unbelievable. They all wanted to become sth like doctor and scientist. (Sorry, their parents wanted them to). One of them told me she skipped one of her classes because they wanted to watch a movie. Her mom called her and pulled her out of the movie theatre in the middle of the movie. She went there twice to watch this movie, because she liked it and had been waiting for it for a long time, but she didnt get to finish the movie. It was heartbreaking.

The reporter was first mentioned by Director Han of Hanbada, in the beginning of episode 8.
Director Han mentioned that they shouldn't always tackle a case romantically, but should sometimes try to use a political method.
As she was saying that she wanted to send a reporter into the village, so the reporter is the one from episode 8.

It's crazy how this issue has been brought up so many times in media but nothing has changed (if anything, it got even worse). It really hit me when he said, it would be late when they're older. They don't know how to play. They won't have tools to deal with the harshness of being an adult. I feel like Gu-ppong tried to change it the "normal" way but like you said, parents won't buy that idea that play will help their children. Seriously, what do you do? He felt that this is an urgent thing. It's very important. This is why our children are thinking of dying. He knew what he did is a crime. He didn't even want to defend himself because he understands. Yet, he stood by his beliefs, hoping that it will change something for the future of the children. He still got jailed for it which is the writer's way of saying his methods are still wrong despite the intention being right.
As an Early Childhood Educator, it really pains me to see children having to study the whole day with no play at all. They don't even get to interact with their parents. Play is an important part of children's development. I hope this show at least becomes a reminder to parents and educators around the world.

Misugaru(미숫가루) is a multigrain powder that has been eaten by Koreans for over a thousand years.
This wonderfully delicious and filling powder was traditionally made simply with either one or
a combination of cooked and roasted sweet rice flour, regular white rice flour or barley flour.
And this was even had as a meal substitute back in the days when food was scarce in Korea.
The most popular way to eat this powder is to make a drink with it either with honey or sugar water or with milk.
It’s a great snack drink because it’s a little more than just a drink. Think smoothie.
And It’s also nutritious and easy to digest, so it’s great for kids and the elderly.
Every recipe makes it differently but here are some of the common grains used to make Misugaru.
    Sweet Rice (찹쌀 chapssal)
    Short Grain Rice (멥쌀 maepssal)
    Job’s Tears (율무 yulmu)
    Millet (좁쌀 jobssal)
    Brown Rice (현미 hyeonmi)
    Oats (귀리 kwiri)
    Sorghum (수수 susu)
    Black Soy Beans (서리태 seoritae)
    Barley (보리 bori)
Brown Sweet Rice (현미찹쌀 hyeonmi chapssal)
    Black Rice (흑미 heukmi)
    Soybeans (메주콩 meju kong)
Black Sesame seeds (검정깨 Geomjeong kkae) ? not a grain but added for flavor
Perilla seeds (들깨 deulkkae) ? not a grain but added for flavor
How to make Misugaru Drink ? traditional way!

I cried so much during this episode! Of course I was creeped out by Bang Guppong at first, but after hearing his reasoning I understood him. Still kidnapping isn’t the best way to go about even with their consent, but the idea of wanting kids to be kids resonates with me. In America, I’m seeing this wild ideology that kids should be adults or make adult decisions and as an adult I still struggle with making the best choices, so how can kids do that?
I’ve been in love with Korean culture for a long time and the most heartbreaking thing I’ve seen so far is how mental exhausting the education system can be. I know it produces great minds, but for kids to not have time to be kids?? Seems incredibly stressful. There has to be a middle ground.
Another show that highlights the pressure of the education system is SKY Castle. I shed many tears during that show. It is very good and highly recommend if you haven’t watched it.

I watch variety shows and I can see how people who go to elite schools are treated differently, but in the show you see how they disregarded his education because of his crime. It’s pretty interesting. Especially considering how the parents were so upset with Guppong and his mom, but when the lawyers said it would an educational field trip-they changed their minds. They were excited that lawyers who went to Seoul National were taking them to see the man who kidnapped their children.

That's why maybe he thought he should've tried to stop that, bcoz he know playing when we're still a kid and playing as adults is totally different.

The tutors were essentially banned from speaking korean while working there.

That’s an interesting observation. The importance of play has been proven and vastly researched as an important part of education, which unfortunately, we tend to underestimate and undermine as part of current societal standards re purpose of education, how we define childhood and adulthood, and change in semantics. Add to that our world view whether it be moulded by Western philosophy or otherwise - all add to our perceptions of how we perceive others and their intentions.
Ultimately, we live in a society governed by the very values which uphold these worldviews, leaving very little room for individuality or the challenging of broad based ideologies. So whilst Bangu-pong may have had good intentions and a justified set of beliefs, ultimately, it goes against societal standards and was framed as such by the prosecutor. And rightly so I think.
I stand with Attorney Woo on this one, who whilst recognises Bangu-pongs values on childhood freedom, is able to stay within the boundaries of social ethics and promote liberation through attempting to change attitudes and mindsets instead. She’s such a wonderful character who epitomises the best of both worlds!
Kudos for the fabulous reaction! 👍🏽

This case really messed with my mind and feels. Like both of you, I understand his agenda and I agree with him, yet I can't defend how we went about.
I was thinking is it the idealism so strong? Should I call it idealism when it was about something very simple and natural - kids being able to play, be healthy and happy? Aren't these actually what should be in the first place. Then I'll go back to "am I idealistic then as well?" (when I actually consider myself as realistic). I just went a full circle, over and over.
I'm Asian but I'm on my 30s. I was able to have fun while still learning. I'd say the generation of students now is really sad and pitiful. (The pandemic added, their fun of being with their classmates was gone or got lesser). There were times when I can't even understand why they have to go through all those hardships at a young age. They're not even in college/university. They were studying as if they're already about to take a professional licensure exam.

I think Young-woo was right when she said Mr. Bang was a political offender. He believed that just one afternoon of fun would be so valuable and impactful for these kids, that he was willing to risk going to prison to give that to them. Instead of protesting or going into early childhood education, he engaged in direct action to take the kids on a kind of field trip where they could just enjoy unstructured play. For some people, the fact that it was illegal means they don't think it was the right approach. But I think the kids would remember this fondly for the rest of their lives, and for him that's what matters.

    misugaru is mixed grain powder.
Rice flour is a preserved food made by drying and grinding grain. In Korea, it is traditionally made by steaming or roasting glutinous rice, non-stick rice, or barley rice. In modern times, as a balanced intake of nutrients has become more important, other grains such as beans, or powders such as seaweed or mugwort are sometimes added.
Since ancient times, it has been widely consumed as a home drink in summer, and was also used as a battle food during wars. According to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the first thing to prepare was wheat flour in the case of war, in homes with men who could go out, or in families preparing to evacuate. Even in modern times, star candy and wheat flour were put in paper bags containing biscuits, which were distributed as combat food during the Korean War, as corrosives. The Chinese soldiers who participated in the war made rice flour their staple food. Originally, during the Korean War, China tried to provide rear support with only the three northeast provinces, but when it could not meet the demand, it even instructed the residents of the central and southern provinces to make wheat flour. It is possible because the main ingredients are all grain flour, and it is a good substitute for meals in modern daily life. Occasionally, it is used instead of porridge for patients who have difficulty chewing.
