I think its important to remeber that the "vfx" for Logan's claws in the new movie are so good because, well, they're not vfx. Hugh Jackman can just eject metal claws out of his hands
Not only do you go through this whole editing pipeline to create this effect.... but you record the process AND take the time to edit it into a cohesive 10 minute video. All to show off a 4 second VFX shot lol. YOU ARE INSANE! Thank you for sharing your gift with us plebs haha
I'm super impressed with your attention to detail here! This isn't just a imitation of the VFX, it's a full recreation, that in my opinion looks very close to movie level.
Damn, this is so much work, it looks awesome! I do think one advantage the new film has over the old ones is that you are tracking over something that is more or less a solid object with clear edges, which is a lot easier than matchmoving a hand which is constantly changing shape
Thanks! Yeah you're partly right but they did it on his hands just fine in Logan etc. Object tracking technology hasn't changed much since the origins film. Presumably they just were rushed by production etc
Looks really damn good for one guy, making it bulge out slightly of the back of your hand as it comes out would have made it even more convincing but this is really cool
I find myself being the only clapping for the VFX team whenever it shows up on the credit reel. So much sweat, blood, and tears go into making a film that goes unnoticed. Thanks for breaking it down for the world to see.
Every time I thought you were done with the effect, you added another detail and I was like: "that's even better than before!!" I'm just blown away!! 🤯🤯
Very cool to see a lengthy breakdown of how someone who go about doing this independently. My only two cents would’ve been to include and composite the movement underneath the skin. That’s the only thing preventing it from looking realistic. If we saw small groove build before it releases, and have the skin appear to be splitting or pulling back the moment they break the skin.
A great project! Thanks for showing us the process, time and effort that goes into all of this! The way they did it in the movie just looks another level! Goes to show how talented people likw yourself are! 😊
Hell yeah! Another job well done. I love that this video shows practical problem solving. The final shot looks great and that color chart workflow is 🔥🔥🔥
the cherry on top was the shadow you noticed and included of the claws to your jeans, this shows the level of effort i need to master, to become a good vfx artist in the future
Wow this was really interesting to watch, I'm very impressed with the amount of detail you went through. It really all comes together so amazing in the end.
Every time I thought he was done explaining something, he kept going 😂 The attention to detail is absolutely NUTS 👏👏👏 Amazing job man! The shot looks beautiful and the extremely detailed explanation is amazing!
I honestly don’t know the tools you use , but the way you describe and show your process makes me feel like I can 😂 I think the claws hold up to the movie man great work !!
This is great work, very photorealistic, however there's one thing they got wrong in the movie that I don't think you addressed: The claws also don't move with any weight. If you've got big metal blades extending from your hand, the very small movements your hand makes will change. In your version, your very subtle hand twitches when the claws are extended still give away that there's no weight on the end of them. I'd be curious to see if there's a way you can solve for that at all?
this was amazing! the whole process is super interesting. One thing I would have changed is the final texture of the claws, I don't know why but they feel a bit ''cartoon''. Almost as if they would fit more on a realistic 3D movie character. I think it's just a question of texture, or maybe it's something else I don't know?
This looks great, for me the best claws scene is the one from the x men days of the future past when logan almost wakes up, you can see the claws going under the skin
It's great, and I enjoyed the video and the detailed process; however, the only thing I think is lacking, is the some kind of motion under the top of your hand as the claws move through.
Honestly most the vfx shots in Hollywood movies that look poor are due to lack of time. All these artists do incredible work it’s just that a lot of those studios don’t allocate enough time to finish the shots in post. It’s a real shame too because what the audience remembers is not the work that went into the shot but the result and because of that a lot of vfx shots get dunked on even though it’s really not the vfxs teams fault. That movie in particular was leaked early with unfinished cgi models and also suffered from numerous reshoots etc. it was just a mess. The one shot that indeed looks really goofy to me in all of those X-men films is the one with wolverine scraping the Statue of Liberty. That shot looks like crap
This is sick how did you learn how to do this did you go to a school or did you do a course/ watch youtube video tutorials. I always wanted to learn (since blender and a few other animation software are free) but never got the chance and it can be a long process want to make it look clean but don't have the time . Also thanks for explaining the steps and process
I don't really bother adding grain to stuff for RUclips videos. Firstly, I shoot on Sony cameras and they're so good in low light that in a scene like this there's basically no visible grain. And secondly, after compression the tiny amount that gets added would be lost anyway.
That's a cheaper way of doing it but they'd all be the same sharpness then. The nice thing about the shadow catcher is you get the difference in proximity to the leg so each blade is blurred slightly differently
It looks really good ! You are very very strong !!! Do you think it's possible to match colours of two clips in Fusion like you did in Nuke with ColorTarget ?
Thank you! Yes it's doable in the colour page. Resolve has a colour chart overlay tool built in. We were just talking about it in my discord server earlier. Feel free to join. I posted some screenshots and a message about how to do it
I would love to see them slightly smaller and then above the wrist, show the skin in the forearm move as they come up out of the hand from inside the arm. My biggest issue with the wolverine claws was always “where are they coming from?”
I actually got help from one of the mods in my discord server because it was too difficult for me 🤣🤣🤣 I'm not really sure how to do it. He got the numpy folder from Houdini but it took us a few attempts to get the correct version
i always saw that something is off with this clip but I couldn't figure out what it is, but I kept it on loop and I got it, the fps of the claws don't seem to match up to the footage, which makes you seem disconnected from the claws
What I mean is that the blades have a smoother animation than your hand at a glance, it might not be framerate, but it's something I keep seeing, also your attetion to detail is actually crazy@AlfieVaughan
this is very awesome i want to learn blender Do you advise me to learn, and will I become like you one day? How long have you been working on these things? How long did it take you to learn the basics and reach the professional stage?
Thank you! Yes definitely worth learning. I studied games design at college before getting an apprenticeship at a VFX studio 7 years ago where I then learned most of this. Everyone learns at a different rate but you could probably get good in a few years if you dedicate enough time to it
@@AlfieVaughan I did not imagine that you would even respond to my comment. Thank you. I want to ask another question. I will start learning on my own without help from anyone. Will I be able to learn?
@saaod219 I reply to every comment! Yes you can learn on your own first. There are loads of good resources online for free. RUclips has a lot of great tutorials
Quite tough! But not impossible. You'd have to paint out the originals (which depending on how much they move and what's behind them could be a big job in itself), then track in the digital ones. Without tracking markers and well planned shots you'll likely have to hand track it all which is tough. Plus you then need to light and render them and rebuild all the reflections like I did here. It's doable, but good luck!
I absolutely loved this video!!! One critique I have is that the claws retract into his hand and arm so the top most layer of the skin should go slightly up. Still though, your work here is incredible and I could never do this is a million years!!
Awesome work. Is the transition from Maya to Blender pretty seamless, you think? I’ve been using Maya for 22 years but not a fan of their abandonment of perpetual licenses.
Thanks! I think there will be a bit of a learning curve but with that many years experience you'll pick it up quickly. I had to learn a bit of Maya when I was studying for my apprenticeship 6 years ago, having already learned blender pretty well. And I found it annoying... But maybe going the other way is easier! 😅
@@AlfieVaughan 😂😂 I’ve actually tried them all years ago, started with 3DS Max, then Zbrush. I went to SCAD back in ‘05 and I remember Maya had the best control. Back then we did our renders with Turtle, Mental Ray, or Renderman before Arnold become popular. Is that your renderer of choice in Blender?
In Blender I render using Cycles, the built in render engine. But we use Arnold at work (I'm a comper not a CG artist though so I don't use 3D software much at work)
If you think about it, Wolverines claws always come out perfectly shiney everytime. This makes no sense, as they are pushing through blood vessels and muscle. Even worse when retracting, as there would be visible blood marks on the exit points. In theory, has blades should have a spatter of blood on them, and when the claws retract, his knuckles are a mess! Can you try doing that? It would be more realistic 👍
